    Just watched it. I was captivated by how outstandingly natural a movie about Catholic Church can go on to such universal and human dilemmas. It's such an intelligent and thought provoking work, not to say anything about the raw and sincere approach. This is not the kind of movie one would expect to restore faith on Church; but by conveying a message of peace, tolerance, compassion and forgiveness, pillars upon which the very Church stands, it goes beyond. To reproduce the words of a Metacritic analyst from The Globe and Mail: "It's extremely difficult to make something as invisible and ineffable as religious faith seem real, let alone touching, on film; doing that is only one of the achievements of Fernando Meirelles' unusual look inside the papacy." A must-watch.

  • @anaheimskip

    @anaheimskip

    Completely agree. I think it really showed that, at the end of the day, the Popes are human. They're not perfect beings. I think with Pope Francis being such a different Pope, this film really helped shed light on what he is attempting to do for his church and for the world (since he is technically a head of state). That he loves soccer, a good pizza, and Fanta is amazing. I actually enjoy that Pope Francis leans more towards being pious and seamed to be put off by the glamourous lifestyle of the summer residence. Also loved him wanting to make a flight reservation. Again, showed his humility, as just being a regular person like anyone else -- despite being in such an esteemed position. Gave me a new found respect for Pope Francis (and for Pope Benedict).

    @@anaheimskip Exactly. As the movie shows, the first trait of a true leader is not wanting to be a leader in the first place. I agree with you, his humility brings him closer to reality, and ultimately to us. A very charismatic and humble person indeed.

    Their acting is superior but credit due to the director and screenplay writer. All the major subjects that we catholics are now facing are condensed with seriousness and humor in this movie. The one thing i loved the most is the emphasis of Ratzinger trying to find common ground with Bergoglio.

    Ohhhhhhhh bravo!! Sobbed and laughed the entire way through. What a joy! One of the best films I've ever seen. Didn't think I could love Jonathan Pryce more than I already do. Truly the acting was next level. Not only was I totally convinced I was watching the two popes I knew I was also watching two great actors radiating brilliance in their old age. The scene with Hopkins having all the blurry photos taken of him with his adoring people made me absolutely fly off my chair I could hardly breathe I was laughing so hard. By the by, I was raised as an atheist, but very much feel the calling to join the Orthodox Eastern Church in my 47th year on this earth, I'm not sure where I'm going with it but I spend time each day reading scripture and writings of people such as St John of Damascus. I think one of the main reasons for this is it eastern Orthodoxy resonates with me far more than the Catholic Church and I guess part of this is it isn't tainted in my mind in the way the Catholic Church feels tainted. This film hasn't changed my resolve and intuition of the church I feel most drawn to, but it does make me realise I have tarred the Catholic Church with a very blinkered brush, and that these people, even flawed white old patriarchal leaders deserve my empathy and love and that much of what they believe is perfectly good and decent when it is not corrupted, as with all other walks of life. Hope the film helps people understand that having a faith is not a 2-dimensional process, it's a very human constant battle, and essentially it's taking part in one THE most resoundingly brilliant philosophies/truths soused in poetic truth laid at the feet of the human race. Anyways just to go back to the film, it really does have to be seen to be believed. what a super-essential endeavour it was and is. So happy for the entire cast crew and director.

    I have followed Benedict's career very closely, including his years of great influence under John Paul II. The trailer seems to be saying that somehow Benedict completely supported his successor, despite Francis being his polar opposite on every major issue facing the modern church. This seems to weave a deeply improbable tale that Benedict was a closet reformer, an assertion contradicted completely by his actual actions.

    The film deals with this issue. The whole first half of it is them outlining their different positions. It's only after Benedict gets to know Francis and receives some signs that he accepts him as successor, even though he states repeatedly that he doesn't agree with a lot he stands for. He does it because he feels the winds of change. It feels very true to who Benedict is.

    Ratzinger was a liberal in his youth. He later condemned, as I hear it, Lumen Gentium as Pelagian. JPII was a charismatic personality and intensely confident in his role as pope, and that's a tough "act" to follow - especially when you've got a shallow audience that doesn't pay attention to what you say and do. Ratzinger cut off a lot of pedophiles that JPII was seemingly unaware of, and I think he is paying the price of having upset the infiltrators. I believe Benedict is a very honest man - which shines in his writings and messages. I believe he kept continuity with JPII - talking positively in his recent letter about how JPII did something definitive - declared the existence of intrinsic evil in moral theology. You will know who is good and who is bad by this - when speaking about morals, do they acknowledge objective evil, or do they only "pity" the sinner? When there is a cliff, you do blind people no favors by telling them it's ok to be blind and not telling them about the cliff.

    I think Benedict realized it was time for the church to reform and adapt. I have always believed that celibacy has been a major reason for the sexual abuse scandals. Had priests and nuns been allowed to wed, just as leaders in other faiths, things would have been so vastly different.

    Magnificently acted, and the portrayals are quite believable and lifelike. One of the best-ever Netflix films.

    Was really surprised by how much I enjoyed this. I'm an atheist who is interested in WHY people believe, and what they believe. I have no belief in a soul, or sin, or eternal anything. In fact I find the idea of religion terrifying and oppressive, rather than comforting. However, this film really humanised figures who are often reduced to caricatures by media and public discourse. The script is superb and the performances are stellar. A surprisingly emotional film that anyone, regardless of spiritual status can enjoy, as well as an excellent character study that pulls the viewer in with captivating acting and layered storytelling.

    It is normal to fear religion. For if God truly exists, you'd have wasted your life. Whatever you did away from God would have been pretty worthless. Nothing would have been more important.

    Fantastic movie. The interaction with Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Price is so genuine and so well done, that it feels real. Pope Francis brought the ancient old faith of 1.2 Billion Catholics to the modern era. He saved the practice and showed the world that if God can change and adapt with his creation, so can Churches. Pope Benedict XVI showed us that he was willing and able to step down. Despite the controversy, he did what God asked of him and he stepped down and allowed the Church to evolve. God bless them both.
