The Two-Faced Hero: Duncan Ferguson's Triumphs and Scandals

Спорт

Ferguson's aggressive style of play resulted in a career total of nine red cards, as well as a three-month prison sentence following an on-field assault of Raith Rovers' Jock McStay in 1994. Eight of those red cards were in the English Premier League, where he holds the joint record for dismissals alongside Patrick Vieira and Richard Dunne. He is known by the nicknames "Big Dunc" and "Duncan Disorderly".

He could play. Dreadful scoring record. Even worse disciplinary record. Failed every time he went to a big club. International career simply didn’t happen. But put him in a mid-table team either side of the border and he’d score a moderate number of goals.

Always wore his big heart on his sleeve - never shirked anything and his performance towards the end of his career at Goodison in the lights against Man Utd was the most I’ve ever seen anyone give in a blue shirt in over 60 years of watching - certainly a modern day legend for me !! - UTFT

Duncan is still loved by every club he played for. Although he'll always be an Everton man here in Newcastle Duncan was brilliant. He gave us everything from day one and despite his injuries, was worth every penny.

Do Newcastle fans love him? Dundee United got the best for him. Rangers were delighted to get their money back. Newcastle know that his arrival marked the end of their time threatening to overhaul Manchester United. But Everton fans haven’t really had anything to cheer for the last 20-30 years or so and look back fondly on him kicking opponents and burglars alike.

‘striking a man on crutches’ doesnt even try to tell the story of what happened. I remember a Liverpool fan in the top balcony at goodison in a derby in the 2000’s who was thrown out for lashing out with his crutches. If he’d got lamped it would have been a very different story

People think Ferguson was just a hard man but if it wasn’t for injuries he would’ve been a top player, you don’t break the British transfer fee for nothing, he was quick, great in the air (one of the best I’ve seen) and had a great touch, he was a great target man. Problem was he was always injured when he played though and full of painkillers etc
