As a self-taught developer with no degree, I have no chance of getting the TN visa. It makes me sad, but I do work remotely for a U.S startup as an independent contractor. Going back to school for a degree would be such a waste of time.

Hey Brandon thanks for the comment, I agree the visa process is really unfair imo. The nafta list is old and outdated. It’s great that you have a job with a us company as a contractor, I really think that it’s the best of both worlds and probably one of the best situations you can be in as a dev in Canada.

The US is not just the major cities. I work for a (semi-) major software company but live in Virginia where I bought my home for under $200k now worth $400k but still cheaper than the west coast. Remote work is a game changer. Don't waste money paying rent in a major city when all you need is a fast reliable internet connection. Oh and the money is gooddddddddddd but it sounds like that was already covered.

Hey thanks for the comment! I totally agree with your statement here. I do think there is some value for RTO for younger people like myself if there is a culture for it. Many things regarding on-boarding are much more seamless in person. But after that initial stage I think remote work is the play, especially if you can get a offer like yours in a cheaper COL also congrats on ur house :)

Hi thanks for the comment, I’ve heard about the O1 visa as well, but under the specifications it seems that you would need to be extraordinary. But I’ve also heard from others that the definition of “extraordinary” can be stretched pretty far.

@@khangaroofinance there are a few criteria but generally top 5% for pay in your job category for STEM positions does the trick. Someone in the top 5% should be able to meet the other requirements for O1A. The EB-1A (green card version) should have even higher pay.

Here are some more observations: 1. In addition to the higher salaries, taxes are lower and almost everything is cheaper. You'll soon realize how badly you were getting ripped off in Canada. 2. The weather is better. In many places you might not see snow for years. 3. Being away from friends and family and not knowing anyone was never a problem for me. 4. The current federal government is a good reason to leave Canada. They want to punish you for being successful.

Hey thanks for the comment. This is a hard decision, and it’s a very personal decision. For my personal situation, my friend group and I ( about 10 ) were all able to get jobs in the USA, but I would say for us it was a mix of luck and timing, and so many other factors. The job market is so different now so I don’t think you should extrapolate my past performance with how it will be for you 4-5 years down the line. I don’t have regrets going to a Canadian school, but that is because I was able to get a job in the USA, and hindsight is 2020. I have heard that both GT and UBC are great schools, but I haven’t gone to either school so I can’t comment on that specifically. I don’t know anything about your financial situation, but I would also look at the other factors involved aside from the tution cost; like housing, loans etc. I would go on linked in and look at alumnis from each school to try and get some of their perspectives. Good luck with your decision, sorry I couldn’t be more helpful.

Hi Harry, thanks for the comment! I’m able to set up brokerage accounts just fine. I have a fidelity account as well as an M1 finance account. I’ve also set up a Webull account but it’s inactive now. I think the main thing needed for setting up these accounts is an SSN, and they will give that to you as a visa holder, ( they might give it to you as an intern on J1/J2 as well but I’m not sure about that one)

“Better” is subjective. Lots of other things to consider besides just money, but from a purely financial standpoint I think most SWEs would do better in the USA.
