Well... who the F approved the price tag for this overhyped, leica fanboys lenses... this is my onliest question! I mean i've conducted a anonymous comparison between VL 35mm 1.4 and 70ish $ chinese 35mm f1.4 lens and showed the results to professional photographers and 8/10 voted that the better, more sharp, more vivid picture is from the chinese lens (again without knowing which picture was made with the OVERPRICED, OVERHYPED voigtlander and which one with the chinese lens) More than 6 times expensive!!!! If this brand was the only one to chose from, i would change the hobby immediately, without hesitation!

Manual focus is what makes photography enjoyable to me. Even when a subject is slightly out of the zone I usually like the image. Some of my favorite street photos of all time, Alex Webb, Vivian Maier, Fred Herzog etc, had subjects out of focus, and it adds to the character of the image.

In summary I think this comes down to 'genre respect'. You strike me more of a portrait shooter, and in this respect you're less likely to be peeved off with any field curvature or even notice it in that line of work. It's not going to be hugely apparent and might even be contributing to the success when shooting subjects wide open or stopped down close. Where field curvature gets talked a lot about is within the serious landscape realm. When travelling great distances, tripoding up and stopping down the lens they expect the optics to 'behave', they expect those corners and edges to catch up to center performance and everything between those two places to be UNIFORMED and similar sharpness/IQ. And that's where this lens falls apart. I no doubt the likes of Andy Mumford would pass on this lens entirely and call it a complete fail, because in his line of work it is important to be able to provide a uniformed IQ across the entire frame when the success of the image demands it. He wants trees or mountains within the entire frame to be equal for IQ, and not for some parts of the mountain on the focus plane smudgy and blurry and other parts rich for details. And so that's why I think this lens has gained some negativity because it doesn't suit those that shoot this kind of stuff (or astro etc), and at this price point I think many would expect it to. So I think this lens is behaving a little more like a cheap Chinese 3rd party lens (albeit with contacts and possibly better build IQ) rather than living up to the esteemed Voigtlander name. I see it as a specialist lens, and there's no problem with that, every lens has its pros and cons, its just good to be aware of it. This lens clearly suits wide open portrait work, or any shot wanting subject isolation. But I think if you hiked for 2 days and came across snowy capped mountains with gorgeous light and expected at f5.6-8 to capture the scene magically with rich details corner to corner... then you too might swear and curse when reviewing the images properly back home. Realizing the kit lens would do the job better is a bit perplexing when we think of primes having superior IQ over zooms. Great review tongue. PS I am excited, today my XH2S will be delivered!

I think where the field curvature becomes the more problematic is not so much landscape in general but architecture and street scenes (as illustrated here). There the fact that straight lines (especially vertical ones) are not quite straight anymore becomes obvious and problematic.

Thanks for the video! Also, thanks for bringing up the curvature issue. I was one of the commenters on your first video about the lens, as I am concerned about the issue. I'm not a pixel peeper, however, I do want to have all the quality I can afford, but then again I also want compactness. I have the old Fuji 23 1.4 that I love, but it is a bit too big, the 35 2.0 is perfect size, but it is not bright sometimes and don't want to bring flash with me. Was hoping for Voigtlander 23 be the holy grail. From your experience, it seems to be great. I guess the only way to find out is to just get one myself... Thanks again for the video! I hope there still will be some more content with this lens. Good luck!

I think the 23mm F2 would be a better option for the price and compactness... you're also getting the weather sealing... But that lens suffers from a softness issue that I am not a fan of.

@ issues with it (but it can be a matter of taste and as some tend to call it "character" instead of optical flaws that could be corrected by the manufacturer but at what price?): curvature and slight softness at f 1.2 and 1.4 (but you have 1.2 and 1.4 apertures).

Which film sim did you use on your photos? Great color!

Yes! Tremendous video, very well expressed and explained 👏👏👏👏. Voigt’s are gorgeous lenses! They make you think; it takes time to understand their light transmission but once you do, oh man. Every voigt has a very different light singularity more than any other brand. That’s their beauty, a knowledgeable artist or seasoned photographer will find a given voigt strength and learn its specific purpose. Voigt’s, like any other lens, can be use for many purposes but once you come to understand their manufactured intended use (Voigt won’t tell you, you’ll discover this with time) then you’ll learn to understand how they “communicate” light! Love your videos young man! Keep them flowing!

At F1.2 it was actually too narrow a dof. I actually found I was shooting around 1.6 or 2 on this lens and I was still getting a good separation. I ABSOLUTELY agree with you about the pop.

I recently did some close focus tests on still life running through the entire aperture range. I placed the camera on my desk and used the electronic shutter with a 2 second delay. I think this lens has a max sharpness range from F4 - F11 (F8 being the sharpest). F16 and F2.8 are still usable but anything below that you can notice the image starting to soften. I still dig this lens, but I def think I will be picking up the recently announced Voigtlander 27mm Ultron F2 when it becomes available. I think that will be more my speed. Thanks for all the love you've given this lens and giving us an honest review! Much appreciated.

Great review. I think your images look amazing and I get when someone says the lens has a bit of a Leica quality. For your portraits I’m thinking of Petra Collins who tends to stick with f5.6 so give that a go too.

Happy to support such a thoughtful creator. My favorite Fuji prime is the 35mm F1.4 so I think I just love lenses that have character ;-)

Nice conclusion, summarizing the experience you had with the lens in an instructive way for the viewer. I do not think that using expressions as "this lens will push the boundaries of creativity" (as creativity is up to the photographer and the lens may do nothing in such terms for them; it is more a question of ease to use, max. aperture, minimum focusing distance, etc...) or "Character of a lens" (which as you aptly point out usually refers to optical flaws) help. Let us just stick to a real description: resolution, vignetting, bokeh (with examples not opinions), ease of use, mmax. aperture, minimum focusing distance, objective factors so that the viewers can see if they fit their needs.. The slowing down inherent (not always) to manual focusing allowing composition is really up to the photographer, not the equipment. Manual focus means one may (not always the case again, i.e. zone focusing) spend more time focusing but does not imply spending more time spent on composing (in fact one could easily say the opposite, with an AF lens the time and attention you do not spend focusing you may spend carefully composing ;o). I am not sure an APS-C sensor can look as a Full-Frame one (or vice versa) each have their pros and cons and specific looks, don't you think? The field curvature of that lens, even if not monstrous, is quite obvious. By comparing the same view taken with it and another lens (on a tripod maybe) may help you realize it (we all learn in stages). I loved your enthusiasm and conclusion. All the best,

Great review! Are you also doing one on the Voigtlaender 35mm 2.0 apo Ultron? I would really like to see a review on it since so far there are none. There are only reviews for the 35mm 1.2 and they where mostly negative due to it being to soft. So it would be interesting to see how they compare!

I picked this lens up late last year and its been my personal/have fun lens of choice since… for that purpose, I absolutely love it! Despite only having it since December, I’ve taken some of my favourite family/travel photos of 2022 with this lens. It has character, renders colour beautifully, the manual focus is nice, small & solid build… I really couldn’t care less about curvy field whatever or some softness below f2.8, I have better things to do than pixel peep lenses of this type; it does exactly what I want it to ie. sharp enough but characterful images like the legacy Fujinon’s (18mm f2 etc…) whilst being fun and inspiring to use.

How is the colour compared to the older Fuji lenses such as the 35mm f/1.4 and 90mm? My concern with getting a third party lens is losing consistency of look between photos.

@@stefan33uk I haven’t compared them side by side with the same film simulation; but, I would say it is in the same ballpark as the older Fujinons from memory (the 35mm 1.4 & 18mm f2 being the lenses I’ve owned… but don’t currently have). It is definitely much closer to the old Fujis than the cheaper manual lenses imo which tend to have a much stronger colour shift. The Voigtlander does have more sharpness and contrast above f2.8 compared to the old Fujis which can make the images look more similar to the f2 Fujicrons at times imo. I think generally it works very well with the X-Trans sensor… But, really the only way to know for sure is to bite the bullet or try to borrow one!

Been shooting with it since the other day and have to say it’s been interesting. The focus is really smooth and short in throw. I only notice the weight because I usually use a 27mm on the xp3. Compared to the 27mm, the voigtlander looks a little more ‘real’. The Fuji is just sharp everything. Crisp, clean. The voigtlander is CLEAR and reminds me a bit of Leica lenses. Just the right amount of rendering. And one of my favorite things is just how close I can focus.

What do you mean by clear?

Since becoming obsessed with this series of lenses, I have sold most of my Fuji lenses, leaving only a 35mm LM for video shooting. All other prime lenses have been replaced by this brand. Recently ordered a new 50mm f1.2 lens

definitely a Yay for me, I'd love to own it... but I want autofocus for video when using a gimbal If I was just going to use it for photography I'd get one, but I can't justify getting two different 23mm lens, the 23mm F/1.4 WR is the next lens on my hit list (unless Fuji or someone) release a 10-24 video focused lens (in the style of the 18-120)

Menu > Shooting Setting > Mount adapter set focal length. You don't need electronic contacts for that. Electronic contacts are more so useful for distance scale, auto focus check when you turn the focus (if you like that), and aperture reading. It also should be really helpful on the x-pro 3 for parallax compensation.

I recently attended a street photography workshop and the teacher showed us how we could take pictures faster and very close passing totally unnoticed with manual focus and the truth is that I loved it, I have the new 23mm f1.4 and I am evaluating this 23mm f 1.2 because it has the distance scale and so you can focus faster in manual and you can observe and frame without looking at the camera.

Yes manual focusing lenses that still have the depth of field scale engraved on the lens are a great asset for street photography (zone focusing).

I tried this one and ended up returning it. It was lovely in its own way but I couldn’t get over the lack of sharpness, if I used an X-Pro or X-E body I would feel differently but I upgraded to the 40 mpx bodies because I want the details. The look at wide apertures is interesting but overall I prefer my Sigma 18-50 at 24mm, I think that’s its sweet spot in the zoom range and it’s surprisingly tough to beat. I guess this is more of a compliment to that lens than a knock on the Voigtlander!

​@@Iamtongue I only rented the 16-55 for a bit when I was starting out with Fuji so my memory isn't perfect but I would say they're about equal in terms of performance. The strong and weak points in the range are a little different (Sigma's best at 24 and 50 I think, I remember the Fuji being best at 35) but with the size and price difference I can't imagine going with the Fuji unless I felt like I needed the aperture ring and the extra reach. I also enjoy the shorter focal range, although I may be weird for that. I use 18 and 50 a whole lot more than I used 16 and 55 so it's nice to have the hard stops there; I've already got wide and portrait primes for when I really want something extra on either end.

The example you show for field curvature doesn't show field curvature at all. The wall is as sharp as her head behind the face in general. Field curvature would show on the outermost edges (the wall on the extreme right) being disproportionally sharper or blurrier depending on the center.

You have obviously - sorry to say that - not fully understand what field curvature is and what you show as the example for field curvature isn't, please be aware of that. I don't have the lens and I don't even want to assess if it shows FC or not, but your example just shows what is absolutely normal.

Honestly it depends if the premium of digital contacts is worth it to you. I would probably choose the TTartisan 25mm f2 just for its price and clicked aperture (vs smooth on 7artisans) though there is no click on f11 weirdly enough. You'll probably get better IQ from Voigtlander though I'd argue it's image quality is not as good as its price tag would suggest.

It's not as super sharp as the 18mm or 33mm lenses from Fuji, but it has a lot of resemblance to a real analog camera! And I like it!!! However, if you prefer super sharp results, then it might not be the best choice... :-) Anyway, I am happy with my purchase! :-) I also own the 18mm and 33mm lenses!

Any chance you’ll check out the 27mm?

I would love to but being a small independant creator i dont have the budget to keep buying lenses. These companies aren't going to support me until I get to a big enough size unfortunately 😅🥲

Hey Tongue, I've tried both this lens and the Fuji XF 23mm WR and for me thIs lens is definitely the winner. It is a lens, that you have to sit with for awhile and learn though. The Fuji is a stellar lens, but a bit too bulky for my taste and just a tad too sharp. I went back and forth for awhile, but this lens is just so mobile and really gets me excited to get out there in the world and shoot. It's a lens I find hard to put down. So Voigtlander is the winner for me. :-) #ManualFocus>FocusByWire

@@Iamtongue I think these qualities add to the uniqueness of this lens. I'm primarily a film shooter and this lens's character makes me feel right at home. My favorite Fujifilm prime is the 35mm F1.4 so I definitely prefer character lenses. ;-). As far as sharpness, I think it depends on the tastes of the photographer. I will typically choose film that does not produce clinically sharp images because that's not the look I want. Every photographer finds gear that aligns with their voice :-)

I usually lean towards the characteritics of the lens instead of the clinically sharp lenses out there. So im incline to agree with you. I think this lens would be an easier sell if it was a couple hundred bucks cheaper. I'm going to keep shooting it some more to see though!

@@Iamtongue it’s def an expensive lens. But Voit has such a long history I know this is a lens that is well built and will last a lifetime. Their are other metal lenses that are much cheaper but I have to wonder the quality of the internal components if they can make a profit selling it at $100? For me, the Voit is well worth it. :-)

I guess you are talking about Fuji 23mm f/2 WR not the new 1.4 WR ?.. Anyhow just asking since I have the Fuji 23mm 1.4 WR it's a superb lens , clinically sharp is not a "Problem" for me as long as the Rendering is matching (*) .. BUT for some all day street , documentary work ..I found this new 23mm 1.4 WR Fuji way to big and heavy ...(it's totally fine for a 2 hours photo walk, but when I was in Istanbul for example , being all day out shooting at the streets ...,not so nice companion) and here I'm starting to consider this 23mm Voigtländer ..For street in bright light you can have the quickest focus in world by Zone Focusing :,I used to shoot for years in the past with manual focus lenses and zone focusing and this is working perfectly fine when sufficient light, when not enough light , ok then MF .... (*) I had used also the 23mm f/2 WR and don't like it at all: it may be technically /lab test quite good , BUT I do not like it's rendering , ..somehow too punchy saturation and contrast , looks to me like bad processed images . Actually I found the "worst" Fuji lens , the 18mm f/2 to produce better looking images , even definitely less sharper vs the 23mm F/2 ..just better rendering, more natural colors, contrast .....however this is very subjective and based on each preferences and tastes => Back now to this Voigtländer 23mm : since as per above I like of course sharp lenses, but sharpness is definitely the 1st prio for every field of usage: to which of the Fuji lenses the "rendering / colors / look" of this Voigtlander do you thing is closer too ?

I've always wondered how a Fuji camera speedboosted with canon 35mm 1.4, 50mm 1.2 & 85mm 1.2 would look like. I've never seen any videos.

Thanks for the review. I think curvature is just an aspect of the character of the lens. On some films lenses are even decentered intentionally to add distortion and aberrations on the edges of frame. I don’t think you buy this lens for perfect sharp images.

@@JaymesMedia the first thing I learnt how to do with my first camera was manually focus, it makes every image just THAT much more precise and the fact that you get less missed shots due to autofocus hunting and playing up is my main draw

@@ish_vids you’re 100% correct. Had a wedding yesterday that had insane timeline. Little to no time to set up correctly. Left my X-t5 on autofocus and I wish I regret that decision now

It seems like a decent lens, but the price is just crazy to me. For around the same price you can get the Laowa 25mm f/0.95 or 33mm f/0.95. or you could get the Samyang 21mm f/1.4 or 35mm f/1.2 for much less money. Or there are loads of halfway decent Chinese lenses at that focal length if you're happy with having a slightly slower lens.

my thoughts exactly! The only feature that is different is the electronic contacts... So you're going to have to determine if feature is worth the premium price tag over the chinese brands.

@@Iamtongue Yeah the electronic contacts are the big draw, but for me that's just not useful enough to make this lens appealing. Nor is the f/1.2 vs f/1.4 enough of a difference for me to consider it. Like you said, if it were a few hundred less then it would be potentially appealing, but its current pricepoint makes it a total no-go for many people.

I think they’re charging for the brand. It’s a brand with centuries old legacy.

I think the kind of field curvature that people complain about with these too-bright-for-their-size lenses is wavy curvature where the focal plane is unpredictable. If you focus and recompose there’s no guarantee that the subject will still be in focus. A lot of cheap Chinese lens are like this; you have to move the focus point with the joystick rather than focus and recompose.

Have you tried the Voigtlander 35mm f/1.2 as well? I've read mixed reviews.

@@samwiseknows Hmm, are you sure? Usually wider lenses are easier to focus. I don't have any of the Voigtlander lenses, but have few manual Samyang/Rokinon lenses, and the widest 12mm is very easy to focus.

Oh and focus peaking really helps with this lens. :-)

The field curvature thing is overblown . Most people will not be able to tell it’s there. I tried the lens and think it gives photos a nice like film quality, so it’s plenty sharp , but not so sharp it’s make editing skin a pain.

How do you feel about the Fujinon 23mm f1.4? It’s crazy, because I compared it to the Viltrox 23mm f1.4 and the Viltrox was better in most objective categories except maybe chromatic aberration. Another advantage of the Fuji is the clicked aperture. If you shoot a lot of B&W the Viltrox is the one to buy. The Viltrox is certainty sharper in the center. Especially wide open. You can buy 2 Viltrox lenses for that money. :)

@@itacatv2146 I like it but I am looking to replace it with the Voigtländer 23mm f/1.2. Unfortunately my Fuji 23mm fell out of my camera bag and the aperture ring is hard to turn now. There goes the resell value :( anyway, I like this lens eventhough it is a bit big and heavy. I have no complaints about the rendering and I mostly use Fujis 35mm f/1.4 so maybe I am used to that kind of rendering. Overall happy with the lens but I want a premium MF lens and I don't want to replace my Fuji 35mm so I decided that the 23mm needs to go...until it got damaged.

I just wish Fuji would improve their viewfinders and manual focus tools. It just is not as good as manual focusing on other brands unless using an x100 or xpro.

I find manual focus on Fuji to be pretty nice, unless you use one of their AF lenses. What tools would you specifically want to see improved/added, and what makes the xpro / x100 better for MF? Genuinely curious.

@@joelnormann a zoomed in focus bubble so I can get that close up focus view while maintaining awareness of the frame. Additional focus peaking colors and definition of the colors would be great as well.

@@AnthonyJGianotti ah I see. You can sort of do the bubble thing but the main view then becomes quite small. What I do is have the front button set to focus check, and also if I hold it down I can change between different manual focus aids.

Have you tried the 35 1.2?

I have. I returned it. Unfortunately it had a white haloing effect, like a glow around the edges wide open. Stopping down it went away, but there is no point to buy a f1.2 if I have to step down…

Yes, the glowing/ghosting effect is hugely pronounced at f/1.2, but you can use it to get some interesting look. At f/1.4 this effect is greatly reduced already, and at f/2 the image is very clean. If you need a clean image even wide open, then you should look for other options. So far, I like this dreamy wide open look, it seems interesting to me, and not just soft - the resolution is still good enough. The main flaw is that there is no hard stop at infinity, but it doesn’t really bother me.

I have a feeling this lens would smack on an xpro1 so if any of you want to unload your used xpro1, lmk! I'm in the market

Dude, I like field curvature for many types of photos. It provides a little extra “magic” to the images. Sharpness falloff makes the edges blur and disappear while your subject is sharp and poppin. For this lens, I’m much more concerned about chromatic aberration and fringing.

Generally, pixel peepers are gear collectors, not hardcore photographers. They salivate over cameras and specs and perfection while never understanding or appreciating a photographer like Alex Webb.

Nope I sold it. As a small creator I don’t have access to review units. So once I finish reviewing them I will sell them to make room for new piece of gear to review. Nothing’s wrong with it but I much prefer the xf23mm f2 or the f1.4

Take no notice of the pixel peeping trolls out there that judge a picture by it's technical excellence. Of course we all like our pix to be technically perfect but with experience you'll soon come to the conclusion that the real 'pop' of an image is created by the content. Then, second to that is the lens character, something which in most cases can't be transferred to a KZread video. Then after that is the technical excellence where probably sensor size is most important followed by the lens sharpness and all the other lens things like field curvature that you mention as well as aberrations etc. If you look at many of the acknowledged world's greatest photographs you'll quickly come to the conclusion that content is king and not the technical stuff. Obviously if the technical stuff is great too then that's a benefit but I can guarantee you a great shot is not first defined by the technical stuff. Only the pixel peeping trolls think that and they're just the ones who probably have never ever taken a great shot in their lives and wouldn't recognize one if it hit them in the head.

@@josecolon8143 rangefinders style lenses that have attributes such as being very compact and wide apertures as well as distance markers. Because of this it’s not a lens for the average photographer hence it’s more expensive to produce and hence costs more.

My Voigtlander 40mm f1.2 (E mount) has character but is very sharp from f2.8-f16. Of course small lenses like this won’t be sharp wide open. It’s just laws of physics.
