I'm confused more than ever. I want people to see the effort I put into dressing well. I'm at pains to describe my choice of garments complimenting one another, when asked. If it annoys my rivals, then I'm okay with that, mission accomplished. If sprezzatura is an unobtainable ideal, as we all have constraints, then it rings false, like actors in a stage play.

Thank you guys for being so generous with your information and experience! I have a few ideas for videos I know I am personally very curious about: 1) an overview of Hugo’s closet...it might get personal, but it would be an amazing insight into the hows and the whys behind your entire wardrobe, not just formal clothes 2) a run through and commentary of Hugo’s suits. Again, this is personal, but knowing some of the details and history of the decisions you’ve made the past decade would be amazing. I could watch this for an hour :) 3) recommendations on socks, pocket squares and ties...specifically recommending companies. I know you’ve mentioned a couple in the past but having them all in one video would be helpful. 4) a specific focus on suit fabrics; types, formality, quality, occasion. How can you choose the correct fabric at a fair price? 5) fundamentals of how to pair fabrics: this would involve everything from suit patterns with shirts, blazers, ties, pocket squares, trousers, socks etc. 6) an overview of more casual wear options. Just a few ideas; keep up the good work and thank you!

Sprezzatura is cool and has its place but when it is overly forced and analyzed it can become entirely non-nonchalant and therefore self defeating. I think elegance is when style meets subtlety and when you lose that sense of understatement you lose out on looking like a Gentleman.

Even if I’m definitely into traditional men’s wear, I tend not to follow to the very British “understatement” rule, and even less the sentence “'to be truly noticed, one should not be noticed'”, after all if a bespoke suit is well made it has to be different form the mass of ready-to-wear ones and it should give to the gentleman a different “allure”. Of course a suit does not make the gentleman, also the man wearing it has to behave properly ;).

@La Onda The point is there are many guys who like to think they practice sprezzatura and yet are guilty of such over-the-top style transgressions. It may be pointing out to the obvious to a more seasoned dresser perhaps such as yourself, but it's a cautionary bit of advice to less experienced men of style.

So brilliant. Years ago I had a wonderful man at a clothing store I worked in the 1980s, who was our clothing buyer and he had it! He knew exactly how to down play his suits and accessories, to make you scratch your head and say, “what is he doing that I’m not doing. It was indeed his way of showing very little effort in pulling together of all the elements of fine dress, always keeping it personal but also adding a very refined and relaxed appearance in the end result. He had it! I have since tried to follow his lead in my own journey. Very informative!!

Hello Hugo, Great video as always. The last phrase you said, " Think of what you can remove more than what you can add", Tony Fadell said it too about technology (he is the guy who designed the iPod) during a Talking Watches episode on Hodinkee. I just wanted to say that in Italy, and I am Italian, we do not really use these words like Sprezzatura, Extravaganza (which in Italian is stravaganza) and so on. Even though I am just a common 23 years old guy, I am lucky enough to visit tailors in my city, Bologna, and none of them use these terms. When I happened to be in Japan or in New York it was quite the opposite: almost every salesmen of the shops/ateliers I visited used some "Italian" expressions. I do not mean it in a bad way at all, and i am probably wrong anyway because categorising people is always wrong, but I feel sometimes that all these people, who use these terms, they are just not natural and they cannot really achieve this "natural feel" and always look a bit constructed in the end. To make a simple example when I think of Sprezzatura I think of a Pitti peacock (as you said, a Christmas Tree) but when i think of elegant nonchalance I think of Cary Grant, Frank Sinatra or Hubert De Givenchy.

I am usually against watching style advice videos because it's mostly just people with very little knowledge saying very generic/meaningless things just for attention. You are the only exception. Thanks for not being afraid to call out the many "posers" that work in your same industry and for, once again discussing everything with logic, depth and knowledge! I really enjoyed your comments on Dandy-ism, it's so common in history that we just boil down something into what we chose to remember it as instead of what it actually was about. Great stuff, keep it up!

Thank you very much Sir for your appreciation and your kind words. Concerning the loss of the true meaning of the words (and the underestimation of the discipline of etymology, which is so important to catch the meaning of things) this is, in my opinion, a tragedy. The problem is that in many Journalism Colleges (especially in the USA), the students are taught that the words are "alive" and that their meaning can evolve greatly as time passes. This is a very lazy approach in my opinion. But maybe I'm just an old-fashioned French man :-) Cheers! Hugo

This has been an educational video. I see now that I need to learn more about dandyism, and to remember that language is a living thing. Forgive the list of questions, but I think it the most concise way to show them. -Sprezzatura sounds more like a state of mind than clothing worn. Is that a fair assessment? I've seen people in unimpressive suits that underwhelm, and people in casual clothing that radiate a sophisticated air without a suit in sight. -Is Dandyism, in your view, necessarily a negative thing? Can it exist in a modified form and leave the air of snobbery behind? -How did you manage to keep your jacket from blending into your shirt in a sea of white? Texture, gradients of shade, something else? I'm always a fan of peak lapels. -What would you consider "over-doing" an outfit? For my own personal style, I do enjoy most of the items you mentioned, but I'm not trying for sprezatura. I also do not try to wear everything at once. I'd like to hear your view on the difference between "a person who enjoys accessories" and "a person who is trying too hard." Thank you for all your efforts. I look forward to the next video.

Dear Daniel, thanks for your long comment. I will answer to your questions in two or three times in order to try to answer to the other numerous comments. Sprezzatura is indeed a state of mind which is fantastically summarised by the English poet Alexander pope when he writes : "True ease comes from art, not chance. As those move easiest who have learn'd to dance". So it is something that is going way beyond wearing beautiful clothes. Dandyism is linked, in my opinion, with a feeling of superiority. This is why I believe the word is irrelevant today. Being elegant, being a gentleman, putting people at ease is relevant but is pretty much the exact reverse definition of a Dandy (in its original meaning). More anon, Hugo

It's interesting. I've been thinking a lot about this recently and it's such a wide and difficult subject. In England, outside of the 'sartorial world', these days you could almost wear a pair of jeans and a t-shirt and people would think you had put effort into your dressing. It's hard to get away from that, and so, I think what it comes down to, is understanding yourself. Knowing who you are allows you to buy wisely, and once you do that, you don't need to make the effort when you dress. Moving on to your later videos where you speak of your own wardrobe, once you have curated that wardrobe, it allows you to select your outfit for the day, knowing that it is 'you', knowing that it is 'coordinated', knowing that it is 'you', because that is how it was 'designed'. You don't have to concern yourself with individuality or whether one thing matches and another looks out of place, because the thought was there at the conception, rather than at the moment of thinking 'What shall I wear this evening?'. At least if I am understanding correctly? To quote out of context Polonius in Hamlet "To thine own self be true" is sprezzatura?

Quite Inevitable to start these days sartorial with a sense of discomfort and imposture. Those were my thoughts sometime ago but not now. As long you become used to, comfort is the right word, and everybody wants to be next someone who is at ease in his shoes.

A great video Mr. Jacomet. Great definition of sprezzatura. A few months back during my holidays with my fiance, we had a meeting with friends and I strongly remember at that time I tried to wear an outfit combined with a lot of accessories and colors. The result: a lot of effort and thought into putting an outfit that looked like I am trying to express sprezzatura but ultimately failed due to overcomplicated the look and feel of the outfit. To my understanding of sprezzatura, it's not about putting lot's of accessories, using multiple colors to appear more elegant and stand out from the rest but to keep things simple, harmonious, wearing only a couple of accessories and understanding your own style because once you start to overcomplicate your outfit, you are bound to appear that you are trying too hard to impress others with your looks.
