I am from China and I've been in Australia for 2 years. Totally agree with what you said. I've been learning German for a few years but just for fun, whereas English is something that I have to use on a daily basis and I can feel that even I am already pretty advanced, I still have tons of, say, slangs and cultural stuff to learn, so I am still working really hard on my English. Fun fact: I am obsessed with BJJ as well, now white 4 lol

Thanks Pete for another amazing video! I totally relate to your Swiss cheese analogy lol. I’ve been studying English on and off for about 7 years. As I reached a certain level, I kinda learnt how to get away with making errors (by not saying it or making simpler sentences) and I think that’s when my English started to plateau. My partner, a native speaker of English, didn’t help much because he thought the area I need to work on (the holes in the cheese) can be just naturally achieved by living in the States - and I thought the same. Then I got a job here and hey, speaking(and writing) in a work environment is whole another level! It’s been a long time since I felt that kinda frustration and it hit me really hard. Now I’m working on expanding my vocabulary by avidly reading books in English😂 I might also read the book mentioned in the video. Again, thank you so much!

The more I watch your videos, the more I'm convinced to live in Australia. That's why I'm taking some private English lessons with a tutor because I need to push myself out of my comfort zone, but at the same time I want to identify my weaknesses and fix them. Thanks mate. Great video! I've come to a similar realisation recently. When you move to an English speaking country for life and start competing with native speakers for job you don't asses your level of English the same way you did back in your home country. Two years ago I was still in Russia and thought that my upper-intermediate level was pretty good, but after arrival in here I got a wake up call, so to say :D Also, it was important for me to realise that most of the native speakers won't judge me as harshly as I sometimes do it myself. If you speak on a decent level already, people most likely will think about amount of time that you spent learning all this stuff and that you're pretty intelligent, not "oh, they mispronounce this and that, it's so bad, they're stupid". Just look up videos with foreigners speaking your native language well and see how you feel. :)

Such a good video! I used to learn a lot of languages at once and think that I'd be able to speak all of them at a very high level once, but moving abroad opened my eyes as well and recently I've realised that my current goal should rather be to level up my English and German, so these are the two languages I'd like to focus on from now on, and honestly, it's so much more fun than dabbling in a bunch of languages all at once. Reaching a native like level is a lot harder, for sure, and it is such a looong process but I think as long as language learners can appreciate the smaller every day achievements and concentrate on enjoying the ride rather than just focusing on the long term goal, it's very enjoyable and I'm sure it'll pay off! The language immersion tips you mentioned are totally on point and very useful, thanks for the video and good luck with your Portuguese!

I'm actually in Australia at the moment, I'm travelling with a friend and trying to improve my English and learn Aussie English. It's a beautiful country, I love it!

@@AussieEnglishPodcast Haha no worries! It's not easy to distinguish between European names. We've been to Melbourne, Sydney, the Gold Coast, Cairns and we're currently in Byron Bay and going to Brisbane and Adelaide next. It's lovely here!

I'm learninng at the same time English, Spanish, Catalan and French. Learning languages to me is a fun. I've always liked since childhood.

Another thing is that many people (I was one of them) think of "native like fluency" as being able to understand ALL/100% of what is being read/said and that just is not true, even myself can't understand some text written in Spanish or many words and I'm a native speaker of it. This specially happens with English, there's like a huge pressure to speak it perfectly and most native speakers actually are pretty tolerant (fortunately!)

@@AussieEnglishPodcast accents! it happens to me many times while trying to understand Chilean Spanish, sometimes question myself if it's the same language. I think Scottish English accent might be a similar equivalent. But there there's the beauty of languages, too!

The beginning of this video stressed my American brain out SO much! My initial reaction was YOU'RE DRIVING ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE ROAD! And then I remembered Australians drive on the opposite side from us, hahaha. This video provides good perspective. I have the luxury of being able to rely on my English while learning other languages for fun. It's not the same as someone else who learned English to come here and live here and work here. One of the languages I'm studying is Portuguese (though I don't give it the attention it really needs... Nor do I give it to any of the other ones, to be honest.) I'm learning it because I have Portuguese ancestry and am interested in getting in touch with that aspect of my family history, even though pretty much no one in my family even speaks it anymore. I would like to live in Portugal one day. Perhaps not forever but hopefully for a few years. When that time comes, I'll definitely have to learn Portuguese for real, hahahaha

Many thanks, Pete! Before watching this video, I was thinking that I would never learn to understand Australian English, the accent seemed quite blurred to my ears, in comparison with the British one. But now I've started to rearrange my point of view, thanks for motivating :)

Pete you are also different to other anglo speakers because only someone who is/has been learning another language (especially from another language family like Portuguese) knows how much of a struggle it is to learn it, even more at the highest level possible when living abroad. No surprise germanic language speakers have a high level of English proficiency, now...for other language families it's a whoooole other story. P.S. Pete I'd love if you could make another video of you using Anki to learn vocabulary, I didn't know how to use it at all but only after your last video, a bit.

I also thought that polyglots are good inspiration to be proficient at languages but then I found out that their foreign languages skills are not that good. Your view about how we can reach a native-like level is true and it makes sense, we have to focus on that one language. But, I am still wondering if I can reach that native-like level since I have two mother tounges? Can my brain store another language?
