Worldwide there are 45 million Dutch speakers of which 25 million are native Dutch speakers. Besides that there are about 15 to 24 million speakers of South African which is a language that originated from Dutch. South Africans and Dutch still can communicate with eachother reasonably well.

Christmas is actually based on Sinterklaas. Sinterklaas is mostly celebrated for Children. Christmas is more a social and family celebration.

Its amazing. Its where happiness resides.i cannot wait to move there. Since i was a kid.i have always been hypersensitive n i can feel pain of others.it hurts me when i see depressed kids or sad oppressed people. I literally absorb their pain n it makes me physically ill. When the lake or water is polluted or treated badly, when the air is polluted n treated badly ,when animals or humans or kids are treated badly.it makes me suffer n ill. N when i was in the Netherlands. The water is clean, the air was clean, the people are fit happy hardworking creative free n happy.the kids are giggling.the air n grass n water was soooo clean. 1st day i thougt maybe i was mistaken but after a week i realized how blessed that placed was. Everyone was happy n i get full energy. N i was the happiest n the most energetic while i was there.it is by far the most blessed place i have ever visited. These people doesnt just talk .they ACTUALLY do care about the environment n about taking care of earth n humans.n do it on a daily basis even if its not profitable. N i was sooo lucky to have stepped foot there.n i cant wait to move n raise my kids there. What a blessed country the netherland is. The best people i ever met on planet earth.i cant wait !!!!!!!😁😁😁😁😁🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️

Not 17 but 24 million people speak Dutch, it's not only spoken in the Netherlands and Belgium but also in other places in the world like Suriname. The thing that I think is very interesting about the Netherlands, is that even it's a small country, it has great influences in the whole world, from Indonesia to South Africa to the Caribbean to the USA. Especially in the USA I discovered that a lot of people are not aware of Dutch influences. A lot of traditional things that are from New York for example, originaire from Dutch colture. We not only celebrate 'sinterklaas', but we also celebrate Christmas. We actually have two days of Christmas 'eerste kerstdag' and 'tweede kerstdag' (first and second Christmas day).

People are unaware because your country isn't as actually relevant as you think. No one learns about the Dutch, but we learn about Europe.

im pretty sure most dutch people celebrate Sinterklaas (dec 5th) as well as Christmas (dec 25th/26th), however, Christmas is not really a religious holiday. (at least not for my family). so Sinterklaas is not a substitute for christmas, its an extra holiday.

Sinterklaas is a Catholic saint: Saint Nicholas of Myra. The protector saint of Amsterdam, Venice and of sailors. But the protestants and non-religious people also celebrate the holiday. He got exported and became the American Santa Claus.

She's stunning! If you see her, you'll know she's American - even before you hear her speak - simply based on her dress sense and hairdo. Whether you like or dislike the style, her facial features and neckline are gorgeous. And she obviously has a good head on her shoulders which should be a plus in anyone's book.

Dear Roy, agreed, I love that she made the effort to delve into our culture. But she looks American' is a bit silly. They are most likely (recent) descendants of Dutch, English, Italian, etc. She probably has either Dutch or Scandinavian roots.

Alvin true but I disagree with one thing. The summers... last summer we had a lot of days with 40• degrees above Celsius. Every year it is getting 3-5 Celsius hotter, in the summer, the reason is global warming :(.

The reason so few people speak Dutch is why waste that time and effort to speak a dying language (more people speak English in Los Angeles county than all of the Netherlands speak Dutch) when you can learn English - the most favored second language in the world. Ideally, each country should speak their native language and the children be required to learn Esperanto as a second language. Just think - we could all communicate peacefully.
