My name is Erich, I have almost 25yrs of experience currently hauling hazmat. I'm considering coming to Landstar in 2-3 yrs only cause we just bought a house in Jonesboro Arkansas, and want to make sure our money is right first before I start looking for a truck or saving for one. But I'm also not mechanical inclined wgat can I do if I check trucks out? Also I'm also trying to do homework on it is there something I can do to help myself?

Agent loyalty is a double edged sword. I too have agents I like to work with. But I don't rely on them at the end of the day.

Just a note, I’m not downing landstar, I’ve never worked there, but if I wanted to average $2000 a week I will go back to Walmart and drive their truck, I’m not trying to discourage anyone from joining landstar, I myself may sign on for a year, to see how it goes, dispatch myself, and come home when I need, just for clarification I didn’t leave Walmart because it was bad, or the money wasn’t good, I had personal issues that required a long stent off, thanks for your informative videos, I’ll keep watching!

I went on board with LS due to Covid and their freight availability. I stayed through the "pandemic" and have recently left. The pay is the issue, the rates are great, but after a 70% hit on the gross, that is the LS cut of 65%, their other nonsense and fuel, not including maintenance on the truck, it was not worth it. I was making less than most company drivers and spending weeks in the truck. I had two good pay days there, and other issues with their agents, many of whom I swear are sitting overseas in Europe. Communication was frustrating to say the least along with the double and triple brokering practices, I expected better. There were other issues too, all I know is that I was going to go broke if I stayed. I went back to a carrier I used to work with, and am doing extremely well so far. I have made more in two weeks than I would have in two months at LS and ran very few if any miles, mainly stayed in Michigan in the Detroit area... I would not recommend LS to anyone after what I saw there. And I have been in this racket for years, due to the Covid BS and other issues is the only reason I found myself at LS, it was my last choice short of turning my authority back on, which was not an option financially at that time.

There are a few centers. They are for orientation and classes. They have parking if you are in the area. The only terminal is in Laredo TX.

As far as I know, if your truck will pass an annual DOT inspection you are good to go for coming on board. I know a few guys running paper logs here, but you can give recruiting a call and confirm during the week. Thanks for the support!

drewgzz Yes they will. But your truck has to pass inspection. Every 120 days. At landstar on your paper work plus paper logs . You have to dot your I and cross your T. You are on your own . So it’s up to you if you make it or fail. I don’t agree with all he says. Some things is good some ok. You have to find what works for you. I work with a few agents. Most the loads I get is not on load board. Then if it gets slow I will get a load off of board. There is benefits working with a couple agents. One of the keys is building relationships with agents..

What about a CAT C15 6NZ ?

On your net settlement amounts does that include a truck payment coming out? I lease with Schneider and I average a net weekly amount of over $1800 with my truck payment and a couple of weeks no pay due to vacations. THANKS!!

AFTER YOU GET YOUR DOT AND MC NUMBERS. FILE YOUR llC and once that is returned to you with a seal, contact the irs for IRS sub chapter S form, fill it out, make your copy. Also, get your EIN number so you don't have to use your ssn.

I love out of NE Ohio. I'm not sure if leasing on with Landstar for example is better or going just owner op altogether.

At landstar we have pretty good freight coming out of NE Ohio, one of the largest agents is down by Canton, and they have a lot of direct freight in the area. It really all depends on your situation if you are deciding between getting your own authority or going on with a carrier like Landstar, Mercer, etc. I've not been interested in getting my authority do to the high fixed costs of going that route, which would limit my flexibility with home time. You might be able to get higher rates that route, but your costs will be higher, so there is always a trade off somewhere.

Is there an optimum driving speed? Presumably the faster you drive your fuel and maintenance cost goes up. Conversely your milage per day increases.

It really depends how you run your business and how you treasure your time and miles. I personally treasure my time more, so I drive at a higher speed.

I’m getting my own truck sometime in 2021 going to do team just tryna make sure i make the most amount of money possible was thinking about getting a reefer trailer so I can do dry and reefer loads but wondering is it worth it to have to get live loaded and unloaded all the time.

I am not a reefer guy, my opinion might not be the best one out there. If you do reefers, you will get many grocery loads, the unloading time at the grocery places are averaging 4-6 hours. And there are many good drop and hook loads you will not be able to take. Hope this information helps!

Volume is about 50% of what it was six weeks ago, and rates are low as everyone fights it out to the bottom. I would assume that's about everywhere right now. I just recorded a load board update video, that will be going online shortly. Thanks for watching and for your comment.

So what you're saying is don't buy brand new? I'm assuming that maintenance costs would be lower and breakdowns should be less often. Does that not offset itself?

In my experience, your monthly payment for a new and used is about the same. New has more truck payment, while old has more maintenance cost. However, with old, you had lower fixed cost. And with old, if you depend on other people to do the repair and maintenance, your cost could be more than a new one. I do my own truck repair and maintenance.

Plenty of good companies out there to lease on too, my question is why everyone is so inclined to go to landstar? At 25-30 % percent that doesnt make any sense to me. Better off getting your own authority i would say.

True there are alot good companies but I my self have a brother that have his own authority and I me know of guys who have there own authority and all said Landstar % is way better than their 100% As a matter of facts I gave my brother the agent/ broker number to call and they quoted him a rate less than my 65% Landstar paid me off the same load And his told me I was making more than him on that same load

I will bet u 100$ to your .2$ my 65% at Landstar will be more if not the same rate as a driver getting 100% running the same lane. Plus I have the facts to prove it cause me a brother compares the rates and also he always get happy when he gets a load off the Landstar other board and u know what he always says dammmmmmmmmm they always pay me more with light loads

Everyone has a different experience, that is certain vut judging by the date this video was posted. I can safelysay covid rates helped out tremendously bc landstar guys are starving right now .most of their loads are from brokers that come off dat load board yet take 65% for that is crazy. Ive seen their load board right now and theyre posting their highest rate 2.60 van runs at best, (not avg) which after 35% taken off gross. Youre left with maybe 1.70 cpm

Ya landstar not for people who need to support a family or pay house and truck payments😮

Do you consider 2500 to 2800 truck payment high? For a 2020

You could still make money on a payment that high, but will probably be hard to break over $2k net a week, unless you run really hard. Your maintenance expenses will be a little lower though. I would recommend being under $2k a month if possible. I did a lease purchase when I first start, at $800 a week. It was though and very stressful, especially when rates got low, and when loads canceled. That payment always comes, no matter what.

Jim, I'm a little late on this post. But I'm dealing with a $4500 monthly payment and maintenance account. I'm not having any issues making it work. I have very little personal debt. Just the basic household expenses. For the month of July. I'll have all my expenses covered by the 10th. And fuel covered for an additional week. And I'm not running hard at all. It's all about how you work the board.

Going with Land Star is a good way to go Full Bankruptcy . Never go full Bankruptcy. They nickel and dime the crap out of you . A lot of people Don't have good business sense. If you don't know how to work on your own truck ,stick to driving a company truck.

Dammmmm I was able to pay off my truck working here

I have the ability buy myself a decent truck with cash. No payments. I’m hoping that having a paid for truck will make sure I don’t fail. Yet I’m still afraid to do it 🤦‍♂️. And yes I’d have plenty in the bank to cover any breakdowns. But again I’m still afraid. I quit driving 10 years ago. I want to go back now but I want to be in my own truck. I just don’t know where to start. I’m 38, single, no family, so I’m in perfect position to start. Especially the ability to start debt free. I just can’t get past the idea I will fail What would you net a week if your truck was paid for ?

I couldn't really give you an answer for this question. I am out of Landstar for almost a year, the rate has been changed, and fuel price changed as well. I would suggest that you contact the current landstar guys to get a more accurate answer. Good luck!

So 3200 a month for a truck with a paccar, to then have to Toss so much money into maintaining the new truck? For that just finance an older long hood. An 05-07 for 45kish. You’ll pay way less a month, closer to 1k. Maintenance cost is the same, and it retains its value unlike a new plastic truck, so you can actually sell it for good money instead of giving it back. Not to mention a more reliable motor.

Cortez Ali good question Cortez, many people asked me the same question before. Trucking isn’t a long career for me and my family, because I would like to spend more time with my two sons. It is just a temp job for me to bring a good amount of money to our family and put us into a good financial position. And I enjoy the good fuel and tire discounts Landstar is offering. Trucking like every job its not for everybody's I had my own authority 7 years and decide go with landstar. Best thing I ever done. Own authority you pay alot more and not to mention you waiting for your money from customers yes you can factory but that 5% you pay and every loads you pull it 5% to 15% paid to broker or agent. With Landstar. You get 65% pulling there trailer or 73% pull yourequupments not mention you get fuel and other maintenance discount.

Hi, thanks for the question! With a new truck, you will have a warranty for a while ( for a certain number of years and/or miles) which covers parts and labor normally. New trucks still break down on occasion, and still need basic maintenance. The thing with a new truck is that you will have a higher payment, which will come due monthly or weekly no matter what. So even if you are broke down (which your warranty may cover), not making any revenue, that payment will come due. You will also be paying a little more and have more downtime for you maintenance services, I've heard of guys waiting at TA for 12 hours or more for an oil change! Even if you buy or lease a new truck, I highly recommend that anyone getting into the business learn about the truck, the engine, all the other systems, and how they work. There is a lot of info out there, and a lot of small problems can be corrected quick and easy. This knowledge will also help you not get taken advantage of by shops out there as well.

I'm a Kenworth guy all around! I have had very good luck with them, both with cummins and Paccar engines. They are pretty dependable and easy to work on. Have you looked at other makes, or are you dead set on freightliner?

I had a 2017 kw t680, paccar mx13 (455mt), 13 speed manual, 3.36 axles, I was averaging about 7mpg running cross country (over the rockies) and running the speed limits, i.e. 70, 75, 80mph. I believe they offer a 12 or 13 speed auto shift, that would probably get a little better mpg. I got the truck at 48k miles, ran it to almost 300k and only put a $600 outlet NOx sensor on it, other than normal maintenance. I really liked the layout of the sleeper as well, very comfortable and livable truck! Would highly recommend an APU on any truck as well, extensive idling plays havoc on your emissions systems.

Southern and Central Florida is a tough area, the rates are extremely low coming out of there. Most of the guys I know coming out of that area typically get out and stay on the road for 3 to 4 weeks to avoid coming in and out on low rates.

Hi Ryan great information videos. However there’s one thing I keep hearing you say that I have to argue a little bit about. Maybe it’s a video if you actually crunch the numbers that you may want to do is new truck versus used truck. You keep constantly bringing up high truck payment hi truck payment hi truck payment. Yeah if you buy a used truck like from Schneider. And you have a $4000 a month payment. He also got a pay for everything breaks you said yourself you dumb $13,000 into your truck. But you’ve done the work yourself. The way I look at it if your average cost on Maintenance preventative And also unexpected. Figure that all you said $25,000 to $30,000 a year. Of course this is on a used truck. Divide that number by 12 add that to your monthly truck payment. For you because you do your own work it makes it cheaper you add that figure I gave you at 30,000 a year difference you up almost to the cost of a new truck if you buy from a dealer figure in the truck is $3000 a month. For someone like me who is not mechanically inclined like you I’m willing to learn but not right now I’m not. It almost makes more sence to buy the new truck you get all The warrantees that you get with a new truck you get extended warrantees that covers just about everything on the truck. Now yes your monthly payment is higher but everything is covered. But I wouldn’t sit here and tell drivers coming in that are not mechanically inclined to buy a use truck that’s gonna have to be working on every single month. I believe buy new with the warranties if you’re not mechanically inclined is the way to go. If you do know your diesel mechanics and everything else then buying a used truck is probably not a bad idea. But in your videos you do have a tendency to make it sound like find new or new were is not a good thing you these big truck payments big truck payments you got a big truck payment to if you got a pay all your maintenance also. Just food for thought there. Keep up the good work and maybe I’ll see you around I’m going through the application process Right now with Landstar.

Good points, all, Jon, minus one, in my opinion. The one is where you say ALL MAINTENANCE IS COVERED. That is largely right, but it's not like a full maintenance lease from Daimler or Paccar. If you buy a new truck, your tires, oil changes, and all the other relatively little stuff is on you. I do agree with your premise that new can make more sense for most that don't have Ryan's mechanical background. Even the big carriers that have in-house mechanics and buy parts in volume and this get wholesale prices, still trade trucks in about 4 years, usually just about as the warranty is out. To me that tells you a lot. Even is the manufacturer will replace some little thing, who has that in stock and where can you get it done and how much downtime? Sometimes even the freebees are too expensive considering the whole set of circumstances.

@Jon Harf, I agree with you! You buy a brand new truck with 0 miles on it with 400 - 500 000miles warranty. Even if you pay $3000 a month you will have a less downtime on breakdowns , because a major breakdown will most likely not occur. You also have a brand new sensors and tires and everything, so the first 2 years you wouldn't even have a maintenance except oil change and grease. That's the time to save all your money for future issues. The warranty covers parts and labor, but to cover any downtimes if you have, or save for 10 -12 payments for the truck for a year ahead if there is no business. At the end ,after 5 years when the warranty expires, you have a paid off truck, babied, 1 owner in excellent condition. You can put it as a downpayment for another new one and then your payment will be less than $1800, or sell it for $60 000 or run another year or 2 with no payment and make some great profit with it. If you buy a used truck 4 years old with a 400 000 miles on it, you have a $1200 payment for 4 years and $1500 in maintenance if you are lucky. At the end you have a 8-9 years old truck with 800 000 miles on it and millions of problems, that you barely can sell and you have to start all over again. Let's not forget the comfort of the new truck, because you will spent 12-14 hours a day in it 5 days a week at least. Also if you are switching to a new carrier you are welcome everywhere with a new truck if you have experience and not many violations. I do not have experience as an owner operator, I am just a company driver, but planing to become a one and trying to figure out the numbers. I have 5 friends owner operators, 2 of them have more than 1 truck. 1 of them drives reefer, 1 flatbed, 1 exotic cars only and 2 of them dry van. They all make pretty good money and have a car payments for $1000 a month .Even if I make $1000 less per month then them I am willing to take the route with the brand new truck, just to have the peace of mind, and at the end I actually will have a nice truck, that's worth something.A used truck could be a disaster, the end of business even if you know what to look for. Best case scenario you will have a $500 less expenses compare to a new one, but for how long? And you will still be driving an old truck. And the stress you will have every time when you go to the shop.....and what about towing expenses? Ugh, can't even think about it. On the top of everything the depreciation on the new truck is bigger so you can write- off more on the tax returns at the end of the year. That's just my opinion, let me know what you guys think!

@@PTucker0864 I didn't mention getting an brand new expensive car. My car payment is only $90 for a 2018 GTI, my motorcycle is paid off, my mortgage is $850. My credit cards are paid off, my credit score is 817 and I don't smoke, drink soda and eat junk food from the street. I cook, that's lot's of savings only there and better health. Also I am coming from a country that has very unstable economy always, so I have learned how to save and get ready for bad days. You guys have more experience than me as a truckers and owner operators, I am a company driver for 1.5 years only, but I like to do things right and prepare the best way possible, because any changes down the road after been hurt will be harder to make. So the first year of owning a brand new truck I think to work hard and save at least 12 payments ahead, so if any downtime due to breakdowns or slow business or even a vacation time I won't be worried. So does it sound like a good business plan or I am totally wrong purchasing a brand new truck even if I can do so?

Yeap, you mentioned the dirty word FLORIDA, it is true. It stinks to get loads out of here, all due to those who accept cheap freight.

So after taxes, insurance, fuel and all other expenses you should clear $1.00 per mile. Otherwise I don't see how it's worth owning a truck.

People fail at landstar because their requirements are ridiculous and their brokers are idiots.

This company is the biggest joke, I own my own trailer to boot and they have figured out how to charge you for everything. Accessorials they get. 35% of everything now except fuel and tolls. There is no more good agents they have been ran off by foreign overseas agents from Taylor group, Arturo etc. Landstar doesn't do a damn thing about these crooks because they themselves are crooks. I don't get 72% of gross because they keep taking that's why they split my trailer pay and truck pay then get their 35% from what the truck pays, tricky very tricky

From what I hear, signing on with these companies is a mistake. If you cant make $4,000 a month for truck payment and maintenance without driving your life away you are doing something wrong. As far as the taxes, you should never pay anything in taxes. I make $300,000 a year off one truck as an O/O and I pay zero taxes from my business, and very little (most of which I get as a return) on my personal taxes.

@@gavnonadoroge3092 Turn your business into a corporation and make everything a business expense, that's the simplest way to explain it. People who want to show $100,000 a year in income are just paying more to Uncle Sam than is necessary. I pay myself a modest income but have VERY low cost of living expenses. Almost every expense that used to come out of my salary is now a business expense, leaving my salary low but all mine.

That's after Landstar % of 65% I know guys who have their own authority who are happy to get 1.8 or more .
