It really is barbaric how people like Boo were treated back then - with the services available to spectrum and disabled people today, a lot of them might have been able to function pretty well in society and be treated like human beings. My own grandfather as a kid had neighbors with disabled children who were shut away like Boo. He knew one boy who was made to sit in the outhouse all day and only let out after dark. He never knew what they did with him during the winter.

I like to think that he got a hot goth-y girlfriend once he had a little public exposure. I mean, the guy was candy. Played by young Robt. Duvall wearing eye shadow, injured little boy meets badass instrument of vengeance, good with children. That's a potent recipe.

I can imagine that he's a crush object for a lot of teenage girls (and grown women) who watch the movie. He's really got it all. First played by a young Robert Duvall (with eye makeup), properly butch but a little bit femme, a combination of injured little boy and badass knife-wielding instrument of vengeance. A slightly scary guy you can mother AND be protected by who has a gentle way with children. Not to mention that sweet vintage house. The dude is candy!

Good video, but I have one thing to add. Boo's family were foot washing baptists. In their religion, any form of pleasure is a sin. When boo's family saw him scrapbooking, they screamed that he was killing them all. I believe that Boo never hurt his father, but rather he was unintentionally damning his family to hell by pleasuring himself with the scrapbook and scissors. That's what I think the author meant.

Robert Duvall is a wonderful actor. He does does well with this non-verbal role. Boo reminds be of my older cousins & friends of my parents I used to know as a child. A lot of people only want to focus on the bad, so they forget there are genuinely kind adults out there whom will actively look out for children because it's the right thing to do.

Highly intelligent but focused to point of expense of other activities, nonverbal varies by person, but avoids violence unless placed in self defense situations in themselves or friends. Easy misunderstood and victim of bullying.

Just like another favorite, "Huck Finn", I love this. Constantly mis-interpreted as racist these stories show racism in stark relief. An evil that should not be tolerated. Mark Twain and Harper Lee should be celebrated. They were anti-racists long before it became fashionable and fashionable it should stay.

Much missing. A mysterious character that nobody knows? Boo lived alone, so he had to go the market periodically, and do some kind of work for hire. He would be known to the community through these interactions. It seems the adults know him, but the story is told through the children's eyes, who see only imaginative mystery.

While his take-no-prisoners attitude and willingness to fight has served him well in the military, he's unable to turn it off at home. Eventually his competitive nature and abusive behavior take their toll on his relationships with his wife and his rebellious 18-year-old son after a friendly father-and-son basketball game turns ugly.
