"To Kill a Mockingbird": Lessons for today
Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel about racism in the Deep South has been a perennial read in grade school, an Academy Award-winning film, and now a critically-lauded play on Broadway. Tracy Smith talks with the show's star Jeff Daniels and playwright Aaron Sorkin about translating Lee's characters to the stage, and with students who talk about "Mockingbird"'s relevance to today's audience.

Wow! That whole piece just made me look at this newest generation way different. Those kids get it. And you found some profoundly articulate kids to speak. Great job, CBS Sunday Morning! Thanks!!

This is amazing. Kids know and understand life more than we give them credit for even more than some adults.
I gained so much respect for Jeff Daniels. This Speaks volumes to me what kind of morals he has as a man . The world needs this story ,they need to teach in schools with it as they used to
Wouldn’t it be groundbreaking to write a version of Mockingbird from Tom Robinson’s POV? I wish I had the skill and wherewithal to do so.

While it could be interesting most of the book appeal is the fact it is written from a child perspective
The 1962 movie should be required viewing. Now on B'way by Aaron Sorkin...MUST SEE!
Wow! Great, well spoken words! These kids are so sharp.
That kid defined Sorkin's talent better than I've ever been able to.
Stellar...thank you CBS....great piece. Well done by the producers and actors, and Harper, yes, but can you see the hidden hand of Lin as well? Put Theater in the hands of teens. Instead of paying hundreds of dollars for a ticket, to see life -changing theater when you can then-afford it....let kids see it for ten dollars. Thrilling to think of it. And how about the kids who were asked the significance.....can they hold a tune, or what? Totally forthcoming and wise in their answers as to the meaning of the background and the play. This is Mockingbird by exponential growth. This was a joy to watch thank you CBS.
We saw Daniels in TKAMB last week. Very, very good play about a very good novel.
It makes me sick that someone so handsome as Jeff Daniels is overlooked and underrated!
Wow... those kids interviewed should be future leaders. Loved what the boy in the blue t shirt had to say.
Aaron Sorkin is a thoughtful and trustworthy herald.
Saw it last night. Wonderful.

Mockingbird should play Edinburgh's International Festival and Festival Fringe in August/September 20/20. I'd love to see it in theatre. I did have the book, loned it out, didn't get it back. I'd like a copy ot the movie. I want, I want, ah, so what !
It's great to see this but there is only one Gregory Peck. Daniels' southern accent sounds really contrived.

Indeed. No one can replicate Peck's marvelous bass voice.
@philipclayberg4928

Maybe I'm being pedantic, but to my ears it sounds like baritone, not bass. Bass would be like James Earl Jones' voice. Definitely deeper than Gregory Peck's.
Richard Thomas' "Atticus Finch" was very good. The entire show was good.

She is 41 and was absolutely brilliant as Scout. Just saw her on Broadway.
Aaron Sorkin did a great job of essentially rewriting the piece to fit modern times. The adults playing the children were wonderful. As for Jeff Daniels, this man should have never been an actor. What is it, like at least 30 years of acting and still, Mr. One Note Performance all the way. Sad.

And now some of those students are chanting,” From the River to the Sea” and calling for genocide against Jews.
Those kids are clueless.
Saw the Sorkin version, and its a terrible adaptation. Makes Atticus Finch buffoonish and turns Mayella into a raging racist, despite the fact that she's very much victim too. The adaptation dehumanizes white Southerners and treats the concept of understanding other PoVs as naive and stupid.
