THE TRUTH About Ball Bearing vs Journal Bearing Turbochargers! (Robert at Forced Performance)
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
When I picked up the new turbo for my Yukon Xl project the other day I learned a ton of stuff about turbo technology. Robert Young is the owner and founder of Forced Performance / Xonarotor turbochargers. He goes into great detail explaining the true application difference between ball bearing and journal bearing turbo types. You may be surprised at what you learn!

I can tell turbo talk gets him just as excited as a Big Ole Fatty does for Tommy on Cheech and Chong him and Tommy look like they could be brothers especially nowadays... I would have to see a picture of him to see if him and Tommy look alike in their yesteryear's

I’m a Millwright by trade and have had a fair bit of formal training on turbochargers and their applied theories and principles. Robert is spot on with his explanations. In fact, skidding, and fretting are two of the largest factors of failure we see in overlubed high RPM scenarios. The more I listen to the guy, the more he confirms my next turbo choice. Wouldn’t matter if he sold some off the shelf, generic whatever. He understands it and that goes light years farther than someone selling something because it’s shiny and makes cool noises. 👍🏻👍🏻

Really enjoyed hearing Robert share his wisdom and I can honestly say I have a better understanding of turbo mechanics now, GOOD STUFF!
Using an air hockey table as an example to explain dynamic lubrication on bearing journals was a great touch never thought to f it like that
I can't wait to see what Robert says in tomorrow's daily turbo video. Let the golden nuggets of info keep flowing!
Thanks for the kool video. Some old dude told me that journal bearing turbos take a beating in commercial vehicles for a million miles or more all the time, and often times they don't go bad. He also stated that journal bearing turbos are cheaper and easier to maintenance. In addition, they almost never need special tools to be repaired.
Fantastic explanation of the differences! thanks for posting this. Its amazing how this platform helps everyone learn and helps us to share the experience

It's very refreshing listening to someone who actually knows what they are talking about.
The first time I met Robert was at his home outside of Austin TX. I drove down there to pick up the FP T-28 that had just came out. He gave me a little tour of the shop and a spare 14B compressor wheel to fix an old turbo. Dude knows his shit and is down to earth as hell. From that day on he earned my business and Is a cool guy to boot. Long live FP!

@@Stapleton42 One thing he didn't mention is that ball bearing turbos spool faster than journal ones. That is why you pay more money for the ball bearing. Journal bearing is old technology. Ball bearings allow you to run a larger turbo with less lag especially utilizing twin scroll or variable geometry inlets.
Hey, thanks for uploading this. I love finding little bits of information as I learn more about these amazing machines.

Robert is awesome, I love his analogies.
Appreciate you showing interesting content. Had no idea I’d like watching a guy talk about turbos. And a education to boot.
I think spool characteristics are the biggest factor that I see for customers choosing ball bearing turbos. If I’m building a street car for a customer who is more an enthusiast than a racer we’re going to lean them towards a ball bearing unit. This will offer them good boost and throttle response without much effort on part of the driver. Some guys don’t want to brake boost and setup various anti lag tunes they literally just want the power to be there when they flat foot the gas pedal and a ball bearing unit is much more well suited to that purpose than a JB setup. I also find certain units very well suited to niche builds as well; when I was choosing a turbo for my B20Vtec I knew I wanted response, off idle torque and good power at low boost because the engine is an 88x89mm stock sleeve B20B running 12.6:1 static. I ended up running a GTX3076R and a was able to make 460whp at ~13psi and basically tune it to perform almost like a stout NA build because of the way the power came on and held.

That’s exactly why I chose a G30-770 for my built fk8 Type R. Ceramic bb, low drag, quick response.
This just saved me a bunch of money on my tubro choice, great knowledge here

This video was so helpful thank you for the great analogies and deeply explaining the benefits and cons to each. I believe this helped me decide the turbo to pick for my street build.
