My ranking is based on this performance, not on improvement (which I understand now, apparently was a huge part of the evaluation, which I understand is important to support people who have room to improve, but is a bit disheartening to people who were consistently great). It would be Melissa, KG and Camilla with Gina close after. If you would like to check out my course: Basics of K-pop singing, make sure to subscribe here: www.katriinka.com/newcourse Oh and justice for my girl Mischa! 🥲

it seems like Mischa was not liked by JYP very much for some reason as she did have skill and it seemed to be overlooked. I agree Melissa should have ranked first! Camilla was great but Melissa's performance was incredible. I think it helped in editing that they had the less good lerformances before Camillas because by contrast hers was all the more great. When I watched the episode as it aired I dont remember feeling confused that Melissa didnt get first, which is perhaps because it was in the episode before I had already forgotten how great she was. The editing choices really worked on me 😅

Melissa left a2k was actually a great choice. Jyp was right, the stage was too small for her. Her joining kpop will limiting her vocals since kpop songs lines need to take turns among groupmates and listening to her with 2-3 lines in a song is not enough ❤ I will love her and give support in her solo career❤❤

If he was rating based solely on voice, he would have picked closer to your picks. But I think he saw some real potential in Camilla and wanted to her to know how good she could be. He felt like putting her as number one would boost her confidence enough to really work on her vocals. I also wonder if some of his picks were to see how well they took to disappointment and anger. He is not only building singers, but people who he can train, work within the long hall and be tough enough to work through all the K-pop training. Girls that already have what it takes may have much pride and less likely to be team players. Melissa was very talented. But she was a loner. He wanted to pick people who met his character traits.

The show was based on improvements. And from the regionals, Camila didn't sing that well but did improve in LA Vocal Evaluation. Meanwhile Melissa, she was already good in the regionals so JYP already knew or already is expecting her to do good in LA vocal evaluation as well. I know Melissa's performance was better but Camila deserved the 1st spot for her improvement.

To be honest, I think it is more a combination between the 2. Like making an average between their progression, ability to improve later, their trajectory and their existing skill set. Like, it is not just black and white, the most ideal case is when they show both improvement and skill. The other is a matter of discussion because the ranking was made through discussion with the trainers and JYP, it was not just his opinion. Like Camila, still considered she still has a lot of work to do even though she was really good.

  • @night_sky_hope

@@thebadseeds What I said about Camila was more about her attitude and character. No matter how much she was praised she still stayed humbled and considered that she needed to work more. Even when JYP asked her what were her thoughts about ranking 1st, she kept being humble by saying she was a little afraid because from that position there was no possible progress and could only be worse or trying to stay there. And one of the values he searches for is humility. Like, those people that no matter how successful they get they do not forget who they are because of fame and keep staying grounded. Considering how much time they invest in the kpop industry and how fans are this is one of the most important things to be sure that they can have a long-lasting career. And she was honest, she did not try to say things that she thought he wanted to hear but said what she thought about. This is another quality he searches for, honesty. Because just the people that show in front of the camera the same character as behind it can live in the entertainment industry without the fear and stress of exposing themselves

@@louisedawnauthor6590 yeah. I also left a longer message about this. They take a lot into consideration when judging the character and attitude of the contestants. And this is the most important thing in their case. JYP even said that if the right attitude is not there, no matter their skill, they will not debut with them. Sometimes can also be just the fact that they do not fit in the group and would be better solo or with another music style.

Have you seen the clip of Camila singing God is a Woman? She looks about 15-16. 😱 😅Melissa definitely sings like she’s experienced all sorts of emotions and her personal story of songwriting so young feels like that too. Camila has the power and talent and typical singer body language but the emotion that periodically appears on her face feels like acting. Gina was the same way, but struggled with it to a higher degree. It’s funny; the debut group ended up singing songs about chasing a boy and having self-confidence. Like, how much believable emotional depth did any of them need for that? 🤦🏾‍♀️ JYP really doing the most during the show for no damn reason.

First of all, thank you so much for this. I discovered your channel after Vmas and I really appreciate your professional comments as a coach and a singer. However I get confused when you mention the fry in the voice because I don't know what that is or how you can distinguish a certain colour from a voice. Second, because I saw what happened in the live chat, I just want to clarify some things: -In all documentary-style episodes of JYP survival shows, there is not given screentime to certain contestants exactly because they do not make it in the group. And considering that they are minors this gives them the choice, if they realised during the show that they want to do something else or not, to have a fresh start. Because no matter how they perform there will not be footage on the Internet that can be used by haters against them. As I can see is the case in so many survival shows, where there even exists evil editing when the editors edit on purpose some contestants in a bad way by highlighting their mistakes or editing in a way that makes them look evil just to make sure that the fans will not vote for them. JYPE shows just focus to the people who make it in the group. Plus, it is also possible the agreement signed with their parents can state for them to not have a big exposure if they do not make it. We only see the good parts here. -This is just a show to give us a glimpse into how it looks when kpop companies create a new group out of a lot of trainees they have. And trust me, this is one of the best cases when JYP is actually giving feedback and points on what they can improve. He judges not just their skills, but also their potential, how well they would work as a group, if their voices and skills complement each other, how they communicate on stage how well they fit with the company's values (like in any other job), if they try to implement the feedback they receive and so on. Because most of all, they receive all of this training for free, and you can not help someone if they don't want that help. JYP said multiple times in all of his shows that most of all for him is the most important the attitude and character they have, and how much they fit with the company's vision and values. Their values being humility, diligence and honesty. For this judgement, he used the feedback over 3 months received from staff, trainers and other contestants. We don't know what happened over 3 months there, we only saw around 300 minutes from their time in Korea. So please try to refrain from sending hate to any of the girls just because the decision of a man that worked for 30 years in the industry, and made groups for 27 years does not fit with your biased preference. Especially on a channel that is about giving a professional opinion on vocals from a vocal coach. -Also, in the individual evaluation in Korea they did not judge whether they can dance and sing at the same time. They judged their ability to sing while at the same time they coordinated with another action and if they improved since the LA boot camp. In this case, being dance or playing an instrument. Even though KG did not dance, she played the guitar and she played a hard song both vocally and by playing the guitar because there were a lot of cord combinations she needed to remember. She played that instrument until the skin from her fingers started to peel off. I am not a singer but I am absolutely sure it is not easy to keep your pitch singing Blue by LeeAnn Rimes while also holding an electric guitar and focusing on the cords. And most of all, no matter how harsh the feedback given to her, she took it, worked on it and had the biggest evolution from the auditions until the end of the show. She truly showed all the values they search for in their artists. Ending this, Katriinka, because you asked if their voices are still raw in the Korean BootCamp. They always sing live but I am not sure how much it was processed after production. They show some parts from their vocal lessons though. And during the Individual evaluations, which were a month after they arrived in Korea, I could clearly hear a difference between their voices and the background track. It could also be heard silence from time to time when there were parts of backing vocals. And for the final evaluations, they posted 1st-row shorts on the Vcha channel. Those shorts are like fan cams made by the public. So if you decide to make another part with their evolutions, I suppose those would be the parts where you can hear their raw voices the most. At the end of the Individual ranking episode (in Korea), they also showed some parts from the recordings of the show's opening theme, and they did the same with the final 2 episodes because the 3 songs performed were produced for the show by JYP. Thank you one more time for this video, hope you have a great day. And maybe you can check on the progress from Nizi Project Season 2. This one is to make a boy's group similar to NiziU that will be focused on Japanese market. Those boys are really talented

Highlighting more certain girls was on purpose because the lineup was already chosen and this series is supposed to stand as a documentary to which future fans can go back to understand how they started as a group.

We also could see that during the evaluations was not just him in the room but also represantives from Sony and production crew and some other important people. Plus, we saw some comments on the other participants and how JYP could understand their characters based on the notes they were given to others. 13:51 I'm not sure how long they prepared to sing the songs they sang for the vocal evaluation, but they did have about a month after the first regional auditions to focus, practice, and work on all the points he gave them during the regional auditions. I also want to add that the rankings really aren't based by comparing the girls performances to each other, it's based on their own personal growth. So I would agree with what you said in the comments, that if that's the ranking system then the one's who are already good will rank low, BUT they don't completely disregard that talent aspect of it so these girls thankfully usually stay at the top. I think you'll definitely see it more in the next few episodes, but those rankings will also take into account their singing and dancing

Camila can dance and sing pretty stably even without proper training while Melissa's dance skills were severely lacking. Kpop isn't just about vocals, it's about the whole package, and Camila is the whole package.

Camilla's best performance is when she does a song she wrote and raps in 3 languages during the talent phase before they go to SK. Savanna came a long way by the end. She was a gymnast. Her confidence just got stronger and so did her performances. I think she, Christina, and Kaylee had the biggest transformations by the end. I think Melissa and KG were both youtubers before A2K.

They had several weeks between the regional auditions and these performances. They definitely were not choosing rank based on technical proficiency on this episode. They were choosing on improvement and potential, and also how they connected with JYP as an audience. Mischa clearly looked tense and tight, and clearly did not really connect with JYP in a performance way. Again, if you watch JYP when Gina was performing, he was not very engaged, while with Camila and Melissa, he was wowed. Those of us whatching the video can't really know what he felt was missing live, but since a lot of kpop is about live shows, it would be pretty important. Melissa seems to have a very set, mature style already, which can be a problem for joining a kpop group, and I would guess that that affected the rankings to some degree. It is clear that for this episode, the rankings were not meant to be about technical skill, but more about the ability to throw yourself into the music and performance. The more polished performers consistently ranked lower than the ones who showed vulnerability and humanity by flirting dangerously with failure. Because you are not watching all the episodes, you did not see that JYP stressed very strongly that they were not competing against one another, they were meant to be showing both how much they can grow, and how hard and how smart they are willing to work. They are really competing against themselves, and he and the staff were looking more at potential than at current ability..The contestants who showed that they were working smart, and who showed particular growth, consistently ranked higher. They were also looking for more heart and soul than actual technical prowess. I think everyone pretty much agrees that Melissa's performance from an objective viewpoint was better, but Camila showed more willingness to take risks and push herself into scary territory, she responded very particularly to JYP's original critique, and because her regional audition was not so great, her improvement was much bigger than Melissa's. All of those factors influenced this particular ranking. Gina had a very great regional audition, but her performance here was not as good at that, so in a way she went backward. JYP stressed that at the beginning, his original vision for the eventual group had room for all the contestants, that the goal was not to eliminate people, but to see who could get ready to debut in time. Notice how happy he got when the contestants clearly had taken his feedback to heart and had visibly improved by their own efforts. This is something that he and the company are looking for. The show also makes clear that JYP was not making these decisions by himself. He is the face of the company, but it was a group decision at all times, involving the vocal and dance teachers, and other staff members. Sometimes JYP seemed to hint that he did not entirely agree with the final choice. The editing choices were also not his--the show editors made the decision of how much of the contestants' performances to show, and how much of JYP's critiques, and probably cut those four to a minimum either because they would not have been enjoyable to listen to for a long time, or because the feedback was too technical or too basic to interest the average untrained viewer. I'm pretty sure that he had more to say to all of them. You notice that Savannah's was the only non-stone performance to be shown, because what JYP did with her, getting her up to the original key, was interesting to watch, in a way that even non-singers could enjoy, it showed her triumphing over a difficulty. Mischa's performance was not necessarily cut because of it's quality, but because the feedback was not something the editors thought would be interesting to average non-singers. The ranking did not affect whether they were chosen to go on, it did not put them at risk of elimination during the boot camp. It seemed it was partly for show suspense, partly for motivation for the contestants, to give them something to focus on other than "Gee, I hope I don't get eliminated", and also because when they did group performances, they chose the group leaders based on the rankings. When Camila came up you said "oh, she's a girl's girl, everyone seems to like her". The staff was watching that and it had huge influence on their choices for the rankings, even though they didn't always say it. How much heart and soul the contestants put in also counted. Melissa's performance felt almost professional to me, very polished, but Camila's had more risk in it. In this instance, the risk was being rewarded, more than choosing wisely. You saw how happy JYP was during Camila's performance, that she was giving everything. I liked Melissa's performance better, again, I think everyone did, it was actually better, but that's not all that they were choosing by. Plus, it helps ratings if you make the viewers mad about things like that, they might have had that in mind as well.

Jyp want gina to be herself just like the other contestants which is the same age as her, honestly, you can't teach someone but change them when they already had habit or technique on they're own which gina already had. Ranking based on improvement is the reason why i didn't really enjoy this show. Like you have said: people with high level of skill and 0 improvement needed during the show, with this ranking method will be penalized compared to who started with low skill and expectation and shows good improvements. In europe, when there are talents shows, the level of contestants in terms of singing and performing is really pushed to the limit. Like you must already be on high skill level during the auditions and then the coaches and trainers work over you to create an amazing artist. In this show instead, between all of them, the level is barely touching a high rank (Just Melissa, Camilla and KG) and they focus on learning and improving.

A2K isn't your typical competiton show. Should watch the beginning of ep1. JYP outlines what he was looking for in the contestants. He said contestants can come in with little to no singing and dancing experience. He said his company train them. He was looking for people with character, good attitude, natural talent to entertain and showed great potential. Basically, being able to learn fast. The girls will be on an accelerated training schedule. I think they'll be debuting within 6 months, making their training at jyp about 1 year or so. Other trainees could be training for 2+ yrs before they even get a chance. Also, everyone wants to rank high of course but it doesn't "really" affect anyrhing. Just dont be in last place twice, which means auto elimination

I do see that you would like to build on the vocals, but I think that an idol group has so much intricacy. The teamwork aspect is important. Obviously dance is a huge deal for K-pop. And personality. I think that a lot of selection was based off of how the girls interacted with their teachers and fellow contestants behind the scenes. I’m very happy with the final selection, and think that they are a wonderful team. Also, the aspect of you willing to improve and learn and showing potential.
