CLIP DESCRIPTION:
When Meryl (Laura Linney) tries to sell another product during a serious conversation, Truman (Jim Carrey) snaps and threatens her with a kitchen tool.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Peter Weir directed this comedy-drama, a commentary on all-pervasive media manipulation. Scripted by Andrew M. Niccol (Gattaca), the film plays like a combination of the British TV series The Prisoner and Paul Bartel's The Secret Cinema. Truman Burbank (Jim Carrey) is unaware that his entire life is a hugely popular 24-hour-a-day TV series. In this real-time documentary, every moment of Truman's existence is captured by concealed cameras and telecast to a giant global audience. His friends and family are actors who smile pleasantly at Truman's familiar catchphrase greeting, "In case I don't see you later, good afternoon, good evening, and good night!" Employed at an insurance company, Truman is married to merry Meryl (Laura Linney), and they live in the cheerful community of Seahaven, an island "paradise" where the weather is always mild and no unpleasantness intrudes. This is the basic situation of the series, which has grown over the years into a billion-dollar franchise for the TV network. As an unwanted pregnancy, Truman was adopted by the network and raised in the zoolike environment of a TV soundstage. Thus, the TV audience became hooked when Truman was very young. Now, at age 30, he still doesn't know he's a prisoner on an immense domed city-size soundstage, simulating Seahaven. Both the illusion and the ratings will collapse if Truman ever leaves Seahaven. In addition to elaborate events staged to make sure he stays put, Truman is given constant reminders of how wonderful Seahaven is compared to dangers in other parts of the world. However, his growing suspicions make him curious enough to try to leave, and the show's director and master manipulator Christof (Ed Harris) must constantly devise ways to thwart Truman's escape attempts. To enter the harbor, Truman must overcome his fear of water, intentionally instilled in him when his father "died" in a boating accident and was written out of the script. Exteriors were filmed in the Victorian-styled upscale community of Seaside, Florida. In addition to the Burkhard Dallwitz score, original music by Philip Glass and classical excerpts are also featured.

Most gangstalkers are bad actors. The thing is that they NEVER break character. They would never be able to earn money off their mediocre talent. That's what is most frustrating for the targeted individual; they know but they will never be told. The point is to drive the targeted individual to step out of the life they have been given. But it's the one life they have. They usually end up floating facedown,in rivers.

For the record, to anyone who thinks this movie is scary, the original screenplay for this movie was actually intended to be a horror film. Edit: Id like to point out, that a screenplay and a script are not the same thing. The screenplay is basically just a detailed summary of what could POTENTIALLY be a movie. A writer has to pitch their idea for their screenplay to a producer. When a producer thinks it’s a story worth being a film, they will fund a studio to revise the screenplay and make a movie SCRIPT. The script can and usually is different from the original screenplay that it’s based off of. Because of this, the writer is usually never allowed to be in the studio when filming takes place, strictly because they don’t get a say in how the movie is portrayed if they aren’t already the director of it as well. Producers aren’t paying the writer to direct the movie, they’re paying them for their idea. Once they basically buy the rights to it, they will do whatever they want with it.

I don’t think it’s scary, it’s sad. But atleast he gets to leave in the end, but knowing that he probably won’t fit in with the rest of society, just being gawked at by others, makes me even more sad. It is a little freaky that everyone knows everything about someone, even to the littlest thing, that’s the only maybe scary part of it.

This may have been a turning point, but this wouldn't have mattered much if other events didn't take place. What really mattered the most in making him realize his world was fake, was because that girl he fell in love with, told him all those years ago. Ever since then, that has planted a seed in his mind. He may have even gotten out sooner because of that, but they have been psychologically manipulating him his whole life, so they were masters at diverting his attention and making him feel silly for thinking things. We already saw how they tried to run cover, how they made his father die at sea so he would always be afraid of the water, etc. Imagine all the stuff they did over his life that we didn't see in the movie. Day in, day out, they were mentally manipulating him by carefully crafting his path through life, who he meets, what they say, etc.

What’s weird about this movie is that Truman’s realisation over his faux-reality parallels how a show in the real world would end. Think about it, an over abundance of advertisement, a forced relationship, horrendously contrived situations (I.e. the father), advanced technology breaking the realism due to their obvious glitches, and a director unwilling to take the character in new directions (him never leaving the island). I’m not sure if this was intended but it’s pretty brilliant satire if it be the case.

This is one of my favourite films. Easily top 25 films ever made. Something that always gets to me isn't just trumans story and its many nuances, eg that isn't his mother, lol, and, the therapist Laura Linney mentions "you need help" would just reinforce the producers ideas. But what gets to me is the friend. That friend is trapped too. You hear it in the golfing monologue. His friend has spent his whole life there too, except during certain holidays (Injuries, or extended holidays the character went on). He's really just as trapped as Truman is. The truman show has been his whole life too.

Jim Carrey is one of the most criminally underrated actors ever. Hollywood just type casted him as the guy that talked out of his ass but then he goes and does performances like this and he blows you away. The fact that he WON the golden globe, for both this and and man on the moon, and then didn't even get an oscar nomination proves that. He's brilliant

Jim is very underrated, I can't even who got best actor instead of him, probably some loser from Shakespeare in love who didn't deserve it. Just shows you time and again what a joke the Oscars are ~ record low ratings this yeat BTW. You won it for us jim!

@@philipperossel1888 They're talking about the actor nomination, not the film. Jim Carrey was snubbed by the Oscars for this performance, sadly. :(
