The reason the Truman Show is such a huge hit is because Truman acts genuinely like a human, so it'd be weird to make him grow up thinking talking like that is the norm, it'd put the audience off. So it makes sense that he'd be weirded out by it.

I wonder if it would be similar to how things are now. Advertising increasingly getting into things, not just commercial breaks between shows, but within shows themselves. KZreadrs are putting ads and taking sponsors more and more. Give a company enough time, it'll probably grow to a point where it feels the need to increase advertising to satisfy investors or whatever. Maybe the ads frequency was lower when Truman was still growing up. Maybe advertising culture and other shows and channels didn't do much advertising until recently in their world.

I mean, realistically the world would never advanced if we all just lived like robots. Like the cultures sacrificing virgins for the gods, one dude has to go "wait a minute, this just seems wrong. Who are we sacrificing them too?". No but really, I like to think that he didn't notice all of this until it clicked that some actors were worse than others and some things just didn't feel natural. Presumably he would watch movies and TV shows (all made for him or at least designed for him) and maybe the similarities from them and his own life is what gets him thinking.

  • @nyongtory4e

Yeah but the Truman show probably wasnt as huge when it began and Truman was just a baby. Years and years went by, started to get more popularity, they expanded the studio without him noticing and started to make the actors make more and more product placements, because the show was becoming so popular, they xouldnt just show them, they had to get the actors involved. I imagine it also gave the audience watching more of a thrill went they decided to buy. A marketing technique. So he probably started to find it a little weird how people around him started to try so hard to "hype up" stuff, but he didnt even consider he was living in a fake world so he ignored it UNTIL he started having suspicions, and then everything was not falling into place in his eyes, amd started noticing all the nuances and weirdness around him, paying attention to them. We have a saying in spanish that goes "No hay mas ciego que el que no quiere ver" which means "There's no one blinder than the one whom does not wishes to see" Thats who Truman was until he started wishing to know the truth.

I think it's because it feels like you're being talked down to, you're being told about something with all the possible disadvantages being withheld, so it's as if you're stupid for not already owning said product. In real life when we recommend things to each other we're very casual, but ads always have to be upfront and in your face so they can be easily noticeable, and that kind of exaggeration just comes across as needy. People would probably be more okay with ads if they were more upfront and honest, but honesty doesn't get you anywhere in business.

It's a small town. Her being in advertising would mean travel. How is she working on advertising campaigns for far off products when they want Truman to stay in that small town? Her being a local nurse allows her to stay situated in one spot. It could just be one of her weird quirks; she likes buying new things and showing it to Truman. If they developed that side of her personality, he just learns to accept it especially if everyone kinda does it. The show literally controls the lives of everyone in that town, they can easily alter what Truman view as normal over years.
