The True Story of Candy Montgomery

Ойын-сауық

On Friday, June 13, 1980, a 30-year-old mother of two named Betty Gore was discovered murdered in her Wylie, Texas home. Betty Gore had been struck with an ax after confronting her friend, Candy Montgomery about an affair with her husband, Allan Gore. Candy Montgomery stood trial and told jurors she had killed Betty in self-defense after her friend flew into a rage and threatened to kill her.

Yes, I watched it last night. It was pretty good, and I enjoyed all the old things like the phones. They did a great job replicating the 80's look. I had read this book on the case a very long time ago. I think Betty may have had some post partum depression going on, but ai still believe 41 whacks was overkill, and a not guilty verdict was not even logical.

The tiny town of Wylie, TX is my hometown. I was born there in the 60s, when the only hospital was the Wylie Clinic. My older sister lived across the street from Betty Gore. Her and her new husband had just recently moved there. She worked at the insurance company owned by Richard Parker, the man Allen Gore called on that Friday night to check on Betty. Allen was a customer of the insurance company and was in the office frequently. None of us could believe what had happened. 1980 was one of the hottest summers on record for us. We had more than 100 days where the temperature was over 100 degrees that summer. Small town America was safe back then. My grandmother lived next door to us, and most summer evenings were spent with neighbors visiting on each other's porches. I remember how scared my mom and grandma were in the days before we knew who the killer was. We thought a crazed ax murderer was on the loose, and could strike at any moment. In the first couple of days after the murder, the news stated that police believed it was a woman due to the size of the footprints that were left in blood. This scared us even more. My grandma said that a strange man would cause a woman to be cautious, but a strange woman walking up to your house probably wouldn't. My now husband and I went to see The Shining that Saturday night, June 14th, not knowing that the movie had ax murders in it. You did a great job on covering this case, Armchair Investigator!

Not only was justice not served in for Betty when Candy brutally murdered, but both series paint a picture of Betty Gore in such a cruel light. Why would Betty still let her daughter sleep there if she knew her husband had an affair with her? Not any women I know. I believe she saw Candy as a trusted friend. My theory is Betty confided to Candy that she was worried that she was pregnant again & this enraged her. I believe it's possible that Candy has narcissistic personality disorder with sociopathic tendencies. She had this persona to the outside world, but deep down, she had a dark side. Her ability to give Betty a baby shower while sleeping with her husband, to be her friend, lie right after the murder & plea self-defense would never have happened today. It's sickening to think she is a licensed therapist. Being a social worker myself, I can not fathom how she ever was granted a license to practice. I feel so sorry for The Gore family to have to relive this horrific tragedy, especially as both series paint her as a sweet lady who was a victim rather than the axe murdering psychopath she really is. Talk about privilege.

I think that betty definitely initiated the violence, if it weren't for the axe being the weapon I'd agree with your idea but the fact that it was at the house and in a location she wouldn't have known makes it likely that betty started by either threatening or trying to attack candy. Still, she went way past the requirement of reasonable force for self defence pretty insane she got away with it

@@elliotpatten2277 the axe was normally located in the garage and the attack happened in the utility room which if you look at the blueprint of the house at 16:22 you can see the utility room is attached to the garage. If Candy went in the utility room to get the swimsuit and the garage door was open she would likely have been able to see the axe herself. Maybe she grabbed it and ambushed Betty in the utility room. I don’t think this was planned, but Candy has some very disturbing patterns of behavior. She was clearly a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Not only was she betraying her husband and kids by having an affair, she was sleeping with her good friend’s husband while her friend was pregnant! Then she had the audacity to give Betty a surprise baby shower, what kind of person would do that? It seemed like if Allan pulled back she’d weasel her way back in by cozying up to Betty or by using their daughters as an excuse. I wonder if she went to the house thinking Alan would be there and then ended up being upset by Betty’s concerns re another pregnancy. Why would Betty write a letter to her mom about what a great friend Candy was if she thought she was sleeping with her husband? It doesn’t make sense.

I think Betty was planning on killing her. That explains why she wrote that letter to her mom and kept it in the room, probably to later use it as defense. Allan is not the type of man this should've happened over, there is no man who's worth THIS, especially him. He didn't care about neither one of them, only himself. He didn't even care about his children and allowed them to be adopted by grandparents once the mother died. Couldn't be bothered to raise them himself, I guess. Candy seems sociopathic for sure, but she tried really hard to keep up the image of a good wife and mother, that I doubt she actually is a sociopath, she's very disturbed woman for sure. Do sociopaths even care about their image? If they do, please educate me. Anyway, I believe it probably was self defense, but she had bottled up anger inside her, and that needed to be addressed and treated. There are no heroes here, only villains. Funniest thing is these people went to church.

the only reason we have to believe that Betty attacked Candy first is because that’s Candy’s version of events and Candy is a proven liar. Candy showed up to Betty’s house unexpectedly to pick up the swimsuit, the plan was she was supposed to drive Betty’s daughter home later that day. So how would Betty premeditate killing Candy when she didn’t even know she was coming? Also even if she did know Candy was coming it would be a pretty crap alibi to go to all the effort of writing a fake letter to her mom and then have people know that Candy’s last whereabouts were coming to her house to get the swimsuit. It doesn’t make sense. Candy was a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Not only was she betraying her own husband and children by having an affair, she was sleeping with her good friend’s husband while she was pregnant. Then she had the audacity to throw Betty a baby shower she didn’t ask for. And she had the audacity to go home and look Betty’s daughter in the face knowing full well she just killed her mother and left her baby sister completely alone in a house with an unlocked door. She is completely self serving and I personally feel she used Betty and her daughter as a way to weasel back into Alan’s life when he ended things. Perhaps she even thought Alan would be home when she showed up unexpectedly to pick up the swimsuit, instead she had a conversation with Betty where it’s likely Betty confided in her “friend” her fear of being pregnant again. This could have set Candy off in a fit of rage which would align much more with Betty’s injuries then the claim of self defense. Betty was slashed multiple times in her face which any expert will tell you is a sign that the killer had a deep hatred and anger towards the victim. People act like axe belonging to Betty must mean that Betty had it first but if you look at the house blueprint at 16:22 you’ll see the utility room was attached to the garage, if that door was open Candy could easily have taken the axe and ambushed Betty when she went to get the daughters swimsuit off of the washing machine.

Candy sounds like a narcissist she likes to portray herself as perfect and could do no wrong. She did not get her way with her husband she wanted him and not getting her way like she usually does she lost her shit. Poor baby I'm glad she was rescued. Also self defense or not she is a nut. I don't think she liked that Betty was pregnant again she didn't want to cut ties. I think that's why she wanted to keep her kid staying over because she liked to throw that in her face. She was told to stay out of her life and she did not like that. Also bs Betty did not write that note to her mom I don't believe it. Candy wrote that letter in that book that's what I believe. She wanted to make it look like there was no bad blood between them two. There is too much motive and too much bitterness for this to be a self defense. I don't believe it for a second. Most murders done by overkill is always due to it being personal. Not everyone is a narcissist but I don't trust one and I don't believe her for a second.

I hate to admit it but the jury got it right. Candy did not commit 1st degree murder therefore had to acquit her of the charge. Prosecution fucked up and a murderer walked away free as a bird. And yes I saw the hulu series on this. Very compelling.

I’m conflicted on the true story that happened once Candy went inside the home because we obviously only have her side of things plus whatever the detectives concluded from the living room. I don’t care for the Hulu series because the last episode left so many unanswered questions, it wasn’t juicy enough for it to be the last episode. I hate that Candy was not guilty because no matter how you slice and dice it … 41 times? Really? Left the baby crying… went to swim practice with Betty’s daughter KNOWING her mom is at home dead in cold blood. It’s just so much.

I think that was kind of the point from the Hulu series. The case felt unsolved and unsatisfying because it is. We get one side of the story because sadly the other person isn’t here. That’s why I really liked the last episode that it showed Betty there saying “that’s your story” because we will never really know. It’s not supposed to be satisfying and juicy. And when she disappeared it was like how people were just going to move on and forget about her and her terrible story

And it would not be my fault if the other person died in the process. Betty was the instigator in the fight -- she produced the weapon, she was the one keeping the fight going, she was the one who stopped Candy, who was trying to get away from the fight, from exiting the house. It was Betty's fault that tables turned on her. She should have just let Candy leave! Oh, and maybe stop threatening people with axes too.

As a long term doorman , when someone is incapacitated you know instantly their resistance stops . That would be a hit 1 to any upper body cavity or head area . So out of adrenaline ,you continue for 2 more swings and that takes energy and is not instant with a smaller slight frame . So to continue up to 41 and 28 of those were concentrated strikes continuing in the head area . That is not self defence . She may had knowledge of the axes location . They were at each others houses many ,many times . She may have stalked them and been in the garage . I really doubt the motive of Wendy to attack and plan a murder in her own home but Candy and her delusional desires to get rid of her is a lot more plausible . Worst of all is she didn’t come forward and call for help or police and say she was attacked and fought back . Her lack of injury and trying to hide all evidence ,seems to be evading a lot more than self defence . The head injury is when she brought the axe back and hit herself with the butt end, hence it was not a gaping wound like it would have been .

The reason Bette confessed to a one night stand was to get Allan to admit that He was cheating on her. He didn't come clean though. He knew bette wouldn't forgive him. He didn't want to destroy her bc she didn't have confidence in herself anyway. There is no proof Bette actually had the one night stand. I believe it was her way of fishing bc she suspected he was having an affair. She loved him too much. One thing I'm curious about. Bette quit teaching over a ridiculous situation. Teachers have tenure. Its hard to fire teachers bc they have to go through school board and hearings. Like court. Maybe she wasn't as calm and passive as we believe. To answer you... once you betray your spouse with infidelity- there is no trust. Its the unforgivable sin in a marriage or relationship. Before starting a relationship- you should be free to do so. You are an outstanding storyteller! I absolutely love your mix of the factual and the fantastical! I just discovered your channel via my recent binge-watch of the Hulu series, but...consider me hooked! Can't wait to check out further uploads. I thought "Candy" was quite good as a true crime drama mini-series, but I still have my own questions and even subplot conspiracy theories... The verdict is out on Allan, imo - but, I don't wish to get ahead of myself until I know more... Apparently, there's another televized interpretation of this starring Elizabeth Olsen coming out, and there is also an older film staring Barbara Hershey I have to now watch. It's such an odd paradox how these horrific incidents induce an oddly compelling drive in us, as viewers, to perceive them as entertainment; in stating that, I'm just as guilty! I find it as bizarre as I do disturbing, yet equally intriguing and irresistible. Idk what that says about me, or society, or even human nature. Great channel, irrespective of the above questions. This is legit murder with personal intent. Literally came from watching halfway through the new hbo series (Elizabeth Olsen's one). Yes, the possibility exists that she was telling the truth that betty did start it first, but the way there were literally 41 axe wounds on the poor woman. I believe that Candy even though she said she was over Allan, was not entirely over him. Deep down she wasn't and that stemmed forward into the murder. It's horrible what happened. Self defense or not something isn't right with her and she should have faced some sentence...ANYTHING! A person who is genuinely sorry and disgusted with their own actions would confess entirely to such intent. Pay with time. I don't believe she deserved to walk scotch free from this because as some jurors said many people get charged and condemned for less. She had support from the church and a good lawyer and people who vouched for her + so much of the evidence back then was tampered with. It's sad that something wasn't properly done...

She and the husband was in on it. No one can convince me otherwise. A woman lifting an axe 41 times.....him remarrying months after the trial. They need to reopen tge case. The case of Betty Gore and Candy Montgomery is a complex and multifaceted one, and it is vital to acknowledge that there are two sides to the story. The unfortunate reality is that Betty Gore did not have the opportunity to tell her side of the story. Nevertheless, it is undeniable that Candy Montgomery's actions, which entailed hitting Gore multiple times and attempting to flee the scene, were both wrong and excessive. It should be noted that in a legal context, Montgomery's guilt or innocence would have been determined by a court of law. Therefore the question of her culpability remains a matter of interpretation. Regardless of the legal outcome, it is clear that this tragic event had a significant impact on all involved.

It's complex alright. Jeffrey MacDonald was in prison at the time of this murder in 1980 for killing his own pregnant wife and two children because he snapped on amphetamines back in the winter of 1970. Then three years after this, pick axe murderess Karla Tucker is arrested for the motel murder of a couple committing adultery in Austin. She was a poor white prostitute doped out of her mind and she eventually received the death penalty and was put down in 1998. MacDonald has refused to admit his guilt and has spent forty two of the last forty-four years since his 1979 conviction locked up. Candy Montgomery committed murder to a far worse degree than the other two yet she is as free as a bird. I just don't understand this since she she was a selfish, lying psychopath. Now she is a mental health therapist?

I was an extra in the movie coming out with Elizabeth Olsen called Love and Death. The Hulu movie “Candy” was rushed and details were skipped. I started the movie in Nov and we ended it in May filming all over central TX and Dallas area and I believe they even filmed in Wiley. I didn’t go that far which is 6-8 hrs from where I live.

That lipstick takes away from your stunning beauty. Go a shade closer to your hair color, not so bright, maybe warmer colors (the red oranges) than the cooler colors (red-blues). You are gorgeous! I like your video coverage of this story. Liked and subbed! I am watching the hbo series about this, now. I was looking deeper into this story and found your channel.

Supremely detailed investigative narrative... 🔎 this could easily be a half-hour episode during a prime time show for amateur sleuth fans, such as I.

While it in no way excuses murder, this whole situation could have been avoided if a.) they had been transparent about the affair from the get-go (though, Betty still may have confronted Candy all the same), and b.) if Allan had simply not had an affair with someone behind his pregnant wife’s back

I have always believed that Candy killed Betty because she wanted Allan. There is no way a person would use an axe on someone 41 times in self-defense! I could not ever understand how the jury found her not guilty!

Im just confused cause im currently watching the hbo series on this Love and Death. 2 epsidods left. But they definitely show it as Betty was trying to hurt Candy first. Coming at her with the axe saying "you cant have allan!!!!!" So thats why i truly thought it was self defense. I guess i need to finish the series to see more. New episode this Thursday 👌 😊
