The True Death Of Superman

The James Gunn Superman movie has many of us wondering if we are ready for another reboot. Is the idea of Superman actually gone? Is this reboot too late to revive the character? Or is it too early? What's the real problem here?

I don't think he's dying or is dead. I think everyone, on some fundamental level, wants to believe as he believes to stand up for what's right. His popularity has often waxed and waned but the character has survived testament of time. Captain America is another character who's similarly is an idealized version that human beings strive to be. Sure, most of us miss the mark, but that doesn't mean in my opinion that the message and values of those two characters stand for don't matter any longer. It frankly matters more than ever. I mean, look at the upswing in Captain America's popularity of late and My Adventures of Superman. Those are prime examples and depictions of the characters we love.

Superman has had so much impact for so long he is hope and hope will never die. Superman is one of those characters that transcends simply being a superhero character and that's why he will continue to live on. Superman is Eternal as long as Hope remains.

Really like what you're trying to do here. Rational talk from a rational fan. The rage isn't unique to Superman, it's within all fandom of all kinds. But we have to remember that that's Internet rage, social media rage. It isn't reflective of the general audience as a whole. Normal people don't wage wars for one celebrity/director/creative over another, they just want good stuff. I do agree Superman and his ideals have kind of fallen out of favor a bit but I think that's because we haven't had a true depiction of those old-fashion ideals put into modern context. If Gunn comes out and nails it I think you'll see a huge popularity bump in those old-school Superman values, at least in terms of on the screen. The world and the Internet culture won't suddenly get better cause he made a truly great Superman movie or anything, but it'll help bring DC culture together. Let's be real, though, most of that hate you're seeing about DC is from one particularly loud minority that will NEVER stop being horrible to others. Sadly, it's who they are.

Hey, thanks so much for that. And you’re right it’s not individualized to Superman . That’s why I mentioned Star Wars at one point. But I do agree with you. I think the world is waiting for something that they can all agree on, but unfortunately that’s a big ask. And you’re right. There are certain people that no matter what they see, they are programmed for whatever reason to hate it.

Thank you for this post! I started cosplaying Superman because I wasn’t seeing a lot of him at conventions, so I decided to start. I now have 3 Superman suits! Reeve , Routh and Hoechlin versions! If I could find a budget Lois and Clark I’d probably buy that , and might buy more versions to! Up up and away!

It also doesn’t help having easy social media access to express our love or hate of a version. Back in the Christopher Reeve days (even Dean Cain days) we really didn’t have that.

I think anyone should be able to like any version of a character without receiving hate, though as an outsider, I will say that Snyder's version of Superman appeared to be pretty divisive to the fanbase just based on everything I've read and heard about online. But I'll ask you since you seem like a fan who knows his stuff: Is my impression accurate? Was it this specific version of Superman that has led to a lot of the fighting? Do you think if Gunn makes a more unifying version of the character, it would lessen the toxicity online? Or do you think it's about something else altogether?

I think you are pretty correct. Ever since Henry Cavill stepped into the role, it’s been an argument between him and Christopher Reeve in terms of the fans. Everyone has been gatekeeping their own version. I hope that the James Gunn version unites people a bit but it doesn’t seem to be

Batman fans are just as toxic if not worse. I’m a diehard Batman fan the same way you are about Superman, but took so much crap from a fan site I visited for a couple decades because I was a huge supporter of Ben Affleck’s version. To have as many years of being a true fan and to have someone tell me I wasn’t because I really enjoyed a particular version is mentally exhausting. It actually pushed me to the point of no longer wanting to engage with fans online.

The idea that someone with absolute power can be absolutely incorruptible is the ultimate fairytale. They say he's not relevant in a modern world, they tried to make him darker to fit a modern world. But i think, now more than ever the world needs a shining becon of light. He stands out against the darkness and cynical thinking, because he is full of goodness, optimism and hope. I think that juxtaposition still works, and i hope that the james gunn movie protrays that.

"Is Superman dead" and I say to that ABSOLUTELY NOT. (Love the Chanel by the way) Yeah the character has had its downs, but when he comes back, he comes back with a BANG .✊💥 You're right so many people argue about this, and I'm guilty of that myself, I think it's because we all love this icon and want to see him done Justice Alot of people say "he's boring" and not "as cool as Batman" But Superman is honestly one of the most down-to-earth heroes in DC comics, of course we love seeing him PUNCH But at his core, he's not about punching the bad guy, he's about the saving the little guy little guy

  • @mattlinkous4356

Okay In a sense Luke Skywalker is Superman of Star Wars. He’s very human while also being a symbol of hope that the audience connects with. Yes it’s a space opera and it’s supposed to be fun but there’s also something very sincere going on. Much like with Superman. Some people really get into deconstructionist takes on heroes but I don’t think there was ever much of a desire for that to be done with Luke anymore than there is for Superman. What Disney did casts such an utterly needless pall on that character. There was no real reason to tear Luke down to build Rey up. They fell into that same trap writers often do with Superman where they’re so afraid of him being too powerful they gotta find a way to take him off the board or nerf him somehow.
