The True Cost Of Arming Ukraine To Fight The Russian Invasion | True Cost

After Russia's invasion, the European Union and 27 countries raced to send Ukraine weapons like Javelin and Stinger missiles, and NLAWs. We counted up all of the military aid promised to Ukraine in just the first week of the war.

I think a good comparison missing from this video is how much it costs to build a Russian tank vs. how much these anti-tank weapons cost. The weaponry is undoubtedly much cheaper. 1 man with 1 missile can defeat a tank crewed by 3 or more.

@@johnl.7754 The "cost" in war is not about money supply, but resources. Russia (as does any country with a central bank and its own currency) has limitless money supply at the price of debasing its value, but the resources are limited by its availability in a useful form, and these tanks require components that the Russian's cannot produce by themselves (at least the more advanced systems).

John L. well the javelins are crazy expensive (I think like 600k), but all the other anti-tank missiles and manpads ukraine is getting are much cheaper than russian tanks and aircraft. of course they will also sometimes be used against less valuable targets. I saw a video once where kurdish fighters I believe in syria blew up an ISIS car bomb (truck with armor welded on) with a javelin, that was a pretty uneven match up. there was a guy with an RPG who celebrated and claimed credit despite the video clearly showing the missile hitting from above, that was pretty funny.

More has undoubtedly been poured in to all that stuff you have mentioned. But it never happens in big bills or makes the news so you wouldn't know about it. But war is a tendency of human. nature. Modern tools of war are more expensive than weapons of the past or the things that go into making things for schools. Countries spend a lot of money on militaries for defense and in some cases offense. For America it isn't sending money to Ukraine. It's sending older military gear that was meant to be used on the European front. And ammunition and explosives that are nearing the end of their shelf life. It is super important and beneficial for America to help Ukraine. The same way to was important for Russia and the USSR to help North Vietnam.

One thing I find missing in these discussion during the talks about numbers is the systems around it. Systems that keep soldiers with food, fuel and ammunition. The ongoing talks is just about this when showing the Russians most crucial problems in Ukraine. A war is a very complicated task to manoeuvre, and the most of it is not about numbers of tanks and soldiers etc.

Until machine guns were developed, riflemen and cavalry and bayonet charges was how land warfare was fought. Until naval aviation, submarines and torpedoes were improved, the battleships ruled the oceans. Today's long-range, accurate, effective, man-portable missile launchers are doing the same to armour, helicopters, and low-flying aircraft. War is hell for everybody. It's extra hellish for the soldiers on the wrong side of a paradigm shift.

@John Smith There is no "paradigm shift". When manpads were introduced over 60 years ago, we were told that the era of the helicopter and fixed wing aircraft was over. When first ATGM´s were introduced, we were told that the age of armor is over. If you watch this vide starting at 0:18 you see russian tank taking a hit from atgm. In a full video it takes 4 hits in 10 minutes until crew abandons it. There are numerous and well documented instances in the last 30 years where tanks have taken over 70 hits from man portable antitank weapons, guided and unguided and survived. Russians have to adapt their tactics in new reality, reality where west has emptied their armories and they are faced with determined enemy. Just like Americans adapted their tactics after losses 11th aviation group suffered 2003 attack on Karbala.

@@TuubiName the direct loss at Karbala wasn't too much, just a lot of repairs. But you're right, the mighty of miraculous hand weapon is overrated. That poor T-64bv took alot of damage to critical parts but still had firepower. The Ka-52 at Hostomel counted for 18 stinger launches but only one heli was damaged and forced to land (says one more was shot over water and i suppose on others a lot of repairs to do also). It's still deciding firepower on battlefield. Tactics are adapting, that manheld weapon supplies do not help win something, only leads to guerrilla warfare and loss of ukrainians lives just like in Iraq or Afghanistan. Everybody in western countries understand it, not ukrainians.

There are so many videos of captured NLAWs and Javelins by Russian and DPR, LPR troops. There are so many fake videos of burned Ukrainian tanks portrayed as the Russian ones. This whole conflict showed to western viewers as one big fake - everything is totally opposite, Russians are doing well and experience minimal losses. Remember how propaganda works: the more you hear in western media about "Russian army being inept, struggling, huge losses etc." that means the total opposite - Russians are doing extremely well.

yes. weapons sales are often done with resale restrictions, and one of the baltic states in particular was asking germany for permission to transfer originally east german artillery to ukraine. theoretically, germany is very serious about controlling who gets german-made weapons, though practically of course we're arming some of the worst dictators. saudi arabia and the UAE are top buyers, and germany's no. 1 arms customer in recent years has been egypt, whose renewed military dictatorship solidified its power with the biggest massacre of demonstrators since at least the tiananmen square massacre - they killed over 1000 in one night with a military assault including tanks, and they took the corpses to a mosque and a field hospital that they then burned down to get rid of the evidence. one year later, field marshal sisi got legitimized as egypt's president through a state visit with merkel in berlin.

@@Ass_of_Amalek This is part of a bigger story that has been playing out since the Cold War. NATO was created with the main goal being to counter the USSR. Right now NATO is the "good" guy but without the propaganda it still is a war. I stand with Ukraine beacuse they do have a right to be independent, but at the same time I am also concerned about where all the weapons will go after the war. The Azov Batallion, while not the threat Putin makes them out to be, are still a neo-nazi militia that has become incorporated into the Ukrainian national guard. Given that Zelensky is Jewish i have a feeling its a situation of needing the fighters and looking past their ideology, but it still raises some concerns. It would seem with countries like Sudi Arabia, the U.A.E, and Kazakhstan, NATO has decided to look past their ideology for their strategic advantage. Honestly with war crimes being committed the UN should be stepping in with a ceasefire, but the UN is structured in a way that makes it pretty useless during conflicts.

Even mass empoverishment, is only a problem if significant parts of the population are affected. Also brancrupcy in a country like sweden or even Germany may lead to poverty and worse chances of offsprings to climb the social ladder. But in most countries bancrupcy is not immediately threatening the lives of humans, war does. Therefor ofc, it is more urgent to act quick in case of war.

I trained for the AT4 during my conscript days 1995. We had a trainer-weapon wich used a 9-mm bullet to hit a paper target at range. If you could hit in the center 1/3 both horisontally and vertically, you would also hit a tank with a real missile. It took about 4 hours to train a group of 32 unmotivated supply-clerks and cooks to a hit-ratio on a moving target of 70+%. The version going to Ukraine should not have the old iron-sights we used but some detachable scope-sight that is much better, wich was brand new 1995, and I bet that their soldiers are much more motivated. The AT4 projectile does not really kill tanks, but it does take out armored personell carriers, and other lightly armored wehicles if you shoot the sides, rear or top. I wish the Ukrainians good hunting, and may history have mercy on the poor Russian boys thrown into this war by the mass-murderer Putin!

That one tenth disadvantage in military spending is partly decimated by defensive tactics and smaller cheaper arms, as outlined ( Javelin, NLAW and Stinger etc.. ) Additionally being a defending force, offers numerical advantages. Ukraine still needs significant numbers of high altitude anti air systems and long range S2S GPS guided missiles. That is the remaining threat, yet to be effectively dealt with. Military intelligence on troop movements etc.. being another critical factor in levelling the playing field. Sanctions playing a longer term role. All these factors contribute towards the nullification of the disproportional advantage held by the invading forces.

Javelin are cheaper weapons? But while defensive tactics are certainly effective, holding a line while lacking the heavier stuff (which you seem to be eluding to) is getting them killed. And yes economically the sanctions will hurt them, but they are in another sphere now and their move to the gold standard stabalized the value of their currency and they arent coming back. Also just how much do you want to escalate when russia can do the same in our own future warzones again and these big expensive anti aircraft systems will get focused and the locals arent trained to use them anyways?

Basically all of Russian offensive actions have been about either stopping American siege of European countries (NATO), or protecting Russian separatists in neighbouring countries. Basically all of American offensive actions have been about destabilizing emerging regions, making sure the value of dollars are not challenged, or sequring oil assets.

Weigh the monetary costs per missile vs. the crucial STRATEGIC BENEFITS of chipping away at Russia's military machine: Each tank/vehicle/artillery destroyed postpones Russian victory by an incremental amt of time, and increases its costs and political position at home. Ukraine gains leverage in any negotiated peace deal. OR if Russia "wins" outright in Ukraine, it becomes too exhausted to invade a NATO member or neighbor (Moldova, Baltics are next). Even if it attempts to invade another country, it would do so in a much weakened state. If Russia is stopped or severely weakened in Ukraine, it lowers the chances for direct NATO confrontation--and the unthinkable consequences that could entail. So if I have to pay higher taxes to send weapons to Ukraine, so be it.

Not only that, it's highly unlikely that opposing countries like Russia would actually follow the rules of war, which makes neutralizing them that much more of a top priority in case of war. But suicide when you're not being invaded is a step that Putin must know is insane. Even if the ICBM doesn't get through the NATO's defence systems and causes no damage at all, firing that is suicide. Even if the command is ignored, the order to fire one is suicide. You need all three of them to work together...and so far of the tanks destroyed we can see many situations when armor roled in alone, unsuported by infantry...That creates wrong picture, because you cannot base analysis of equipment effectivness based on it's inproper use. That being said...Many light infantry units with proper AT weapons saturation in home environment proved to be great basis for defence strategy.

The problem is that comparing Russia's defense spending/military might to Ukraines is an unrealistic comparison. A huge portion of Russia's military spending goes into maintaining their nuclear arsenal. These are effectively useless in this war. Their only purpose is to prevent NATO from joining in force. In addition, a lot of their money goes to maintaining legacy Soviet Era hardware like T-80 MBTs and whatnot. These, particularly with the use of cheap drones from Turkey and Anti-Tank Missiles like the NLAW are not the unstoppable wall of metal that they would have been in the war they were built for. In addition, they spend lots of money on flashy projects as a form of propaganda and force projection (like 5th Generation fighters), which while impressive, there simply aren't enough of them around to make much difference in comparison to how much they cost. Finally there's their Navy. The navy has minimal use in this invasion aside from taking the south of Ukraine. So while they may 'Outspend' Ukraine by a country mile, the vast majority of those funds don't manifest in hardware/troops/infrastructure ideal for the type of assault they're carrying out. Even accounting for this, the actual hardware entering Ukraine does likely represent significantly more military spending than Ukraine's entire military budget. But then you look at how Ukraine has spent their money and since the Crimean Peninsula was annexed it has been entirely focused on a defensive war against a russian invasion. That means they've been spending more efficiently. Add to this, that defending doesn't require expensive complex supply trains, troop enthusiasm/morale (fighting for your own country vs invading another country) and all the other things that have been mentioned. It's certainly not One-Sided in favour of Ukraine but it's not such a difference as the media tends to state.

Cost over $1,000,000 and cannot detroy enough tanks per sortie and can easily be shot down. Infantry squad equipped with NLAWS $30,000 and AT-4 $1,500 are far cost effective and far more numerous. Yet still usedul. The Switchblade 300 and 600 drones are more lethal, easier to use, long range and relatively cheap.

These missiles are designed to kill tanks and aircraft, specifically, Russian tanks and aircraft. NATO countries don't expect to use these missiles on other threats (the US does have to keep Asia in mind though). So there is no point to keep them in NATO stockpiles when they could be used to reduce the number of Russian tanks.

If you don’t care what happens to your mother, sister, little brother and your town, state and other countrymen, how can you justify not fighting for them? My thinking is very simple. If you don’t care about the above, then let others do your fighting for you. But you need to find another country.

  • @bencockburn4838

    @bencockburn4838

The money you talk about is ignoring the continuous money spent every year on education every year. In the UK, we spend 3.9% of our GDP on education each year, but only 2% on our defence forces, which sounds like our priorities are skewed heavily to education rather than defence of the realm. Much of what has been sent to Ukraine is from our existing military reserves. Your use of the term 'generosity' is because suddenly this money is made available where before it was not. It also suggests that the value in a university, school or library is in some fixed assets, like the buildings or the books, where for at least the first two it is certainly not; you need teachers, lecturers, professors, researchers, students, student grants, administrators, janitors, cleaners and so on, which come with a recurring cost that needs to be budgeted for. The only way we would see what you want is for a massive, permanent increase in the education budget and to hope that our civil servants don't mess up spending vast sums of money on these institutions they are summoning up out of the ether. Take for example the Scottish 'super hospitals' that were supposed to revolutionise healthcare in Scotland, yet have been nothing but a millstone around the Scottish Executive's necks for years now.
