Man, Japan has some amazing marketing folks. I know this is a funny takeaway from a video about roller coasters, but that ad with the chanting and the people being flung towards the camera really sells the idea of the ride in a fun, funny, exciting way.

This was the only rollercoaster I've been on where I actually blanked out for half a second during the launch phase. There are instructions all over the ride telling the rider to not lean forward at all and to have your hands on the arm rest before and during the launch. Those injuries were definitely caused by not following instructions.

I think if we want to make a coaster with this acceleration again, the launch system must included headrest and back switches, until all occupants pressed their head and back firmly on the switches, it wouldn't launch. That's the only way I think will make it safe.
After hearing the "Do-Don-Pa" chant/tune, I was waiting for the "Buddy, you're a boy, make a big noise Playing in the street, gonna be a big man someday You got mud on your face, you big disgrace Kicking your can all over the place, singin' " ❤❤

Unfortunately, it may have actually violated OSHA regulations, and was thus unfit to operate. However, the park continued to lie to people until they found the perfect excuse to absolve themselves of guilt and remorse, with the rollercoaster being scrapped entirely and letting nature reclaim the land.
Having rode Do-Donpa in 2013 one thing I can say is the seats in the more modern trains might be a reason. When I rode the seat back was very straight and designed so you leaned back into it to brace your neck and spine. The more modern seats appear bucket style, which may constrict movement to dissipate energy. (I was back row so this might be a skewed perspective) Amazing ride when I went, literally like being shot from a cannon. You go from nothing to blitz so fast you can't scream. The top hat was also mental, despite being around 118kg at the time, I still leapt way out of my seat, to the point I was ready to re-enact the worst of Theme Park on a 90's pc XD
I went on this in 2004 and it didn't feel any faster than any other launch coaster I'd been on. I put this down to the fact that it had very comfy sports car type seats. The only terrifying thing at this park was the horror hospital.

Idk how, as a coaster enthusiast, I missed the news of dododonpa closing permanently, but I am entirely devastated to hear about it by seeing a video posted by expedition extinct. 😭 What a jarring video to receive on my feed. 😭😭😭
I rode dododonpa a couple of times in 2019 and had no idea there was any danger on it. The first time I went on I was on my own and I was shocked by the power of the launch. After riding the other coasters in the park I went back for seconds and met another tourist and convinced them to buy a fast pass and we rode it together. While waiting for the launch the other person was turned talking to me and I said to them "you probably want to put your head back for this" and a few seconds later we were shot out of the tunnel! I dont doubt that someone could get injured if they were positioned awkwardly during the launch
I love your dedication to using that clip of Desperado in so many of your videos. It always makes me crack up.

I'm quite sure that with the Do-dodonpa refurbishment the launch didn't only increase in speed but also decresed in time from 1.8 to 1.6 seconds... wich just makes it even more insane xD
That is by far the best quality footage of Moonsault Scramble i have seen, you can really tell how fast it was, over 6 gs i think. Crazy for the early 1980s. Thanks!
I grew up in japan 20 years ago and visited fujiQ a lot. I was always too scared to ride ドドンパ and would go on Fujiyama instead. After moving to the US I always regretted not riding this...... until now.
This is the best video yet. Seriously. It’s so funny. Inside jokes. Hidden jokes. Just for you jokes. Just for us jokes
5:38 I have to correct you there cause it works the other way around. The central tank the pressure tank which shoots compressed air in the 4 cilinders on each side of the tower. Each cylinder has a piston which is connected to a cable, having the cart held by a cable on every side of the tower. You did got it correct that its using the cylinder pressure to weigh the cart. I've operated one of these rides for several seasons as my main So I got to know the mechanics of it quite well 😂
The Ultimate was my version of Dododonpa that I never got to experience but I always wanted to.
RIP, Do-Dodonpa. You will be missed!
Insane quality as usual. Always find yous videos fascinating and well put together 😊
Reminds me of Dream World's Tower of Terror (Queensland, Australia) with its electronic acceleration, a decade before Superman The Ride. I was there when they were first testing it, and the Japanese park owner was standing there watching with a smile on his face. The sound of the ride I'll never forget. It was like a Tesla Coil from Red Alert charging up. You blasted out of the tunnel at high speed, sped through the park in a straight line, and straight up this huge tower, before falling back down again. Brilliant!
I almost got to ride Top Thrill Dragster back in 2018. Of course, it broke down for the day a few minutes before we were going to board it.. After an hour wait. Every time i went after that, it was either closed or had a huge wait. Then the accident happened..so I missed that opportunity. I am looking forward to riding Top Thrill 2 this year, though!

Yet another great video good sir!🤘🏼
Thank you for doing this roller coaster and also for talking about Fuji-Q Highland. Some roller coaster enthusiasts forget about this park a lot in their videos but happy you did it. This was one of my favorite roller coasters at Fuji-Q, when I lived in Japan. That launch was really fast, it made you feel like if you were a F/A-18 pilot about launch off an aircraft carrier. Even the hydraulic sounds you would hear when you about launch reminded me of the catapults you would hear when the jets launched. I was super sad to hear that they had closed it down, because I really wanted to ride it one more time before moving back to the states. Having ridden it both versions of the coaster, the top hat was fun, but the loop was amazing, especially when you felt like you were going in slow motion. Fuji-Q is definitely a park I majorly recommend going if you are ever in Japan, especially now that they have a new boomerang type coaster.
I rode Do-dodonpa back when it had the top hat, but I didn't know they'd recently closed it permanently. Only coaster I've been on where they make you remove all your watches, jewelry & any footwear before you board the ride vehicle. They were ultra safety conscious!

I never got to ride this one but I did ride Hypersonic XL. It was a truly weird experience - it felt like my brain was a second behind what was actually happening. Right after the launch it looked like the track just ended, but then I realized we were on the vertical tower. But by the time I registered that we were going down, and before I could catch up we hit the brake.. I think it must have been like that for most people as everyone looked terrified right before the launch and ended up laughing hysterically at the brake like WTF just happened. :D
Sam, I was waiting for the Lance clip. You never disappoint! Is Nemesis Reborn a new coaster cred?

I rode Dodonpa when I went to Japan in July 2018...the launch definitely felt like being rear-ended by a semi! One of the few coasters I felt genuine fear before riding, but was honestly a really cool experience~ I actually felt that Eejanaika is more dangerous...the inversions are very intense, and there are warnings about spine misalignment. Yet again, another great video. For me, the one that got away was almost Superman at Magic Mountain but I finally rode it. We had annual passes and every time we went, it was closed. I think because of the cost of running it and maintaining it, they hardly ever turn it on. Other then that, I can't think of one that I'm disappointed that I missed. I thought about going on X2 but it was closed the last time we went and I wasn't really looking forward to it because of all the spinning

Okay that end bit killed me.

My favorite “launch” is still Hulk at Universal. Especially that first surprise ride. It’s very unique, and a fantastic coaster.
Weird thing is that when I heard this coaster's name, I thought it would be themed to Tenshinhan from Dragon Ball (considering it's a skill he and the Crane School uses). Guess I now know where Toriyama got the name for the technique now. Thanks for the history of the term on top of the coaster history

s&s's space shot at adventureland was one of the first 'thrill' rides I remember riding. I had no idea how significant that model was for coaster-building as a whole!
14:46 The updated launch was actually 0-112 in 1.56 seconds. They made it faster, and launched you in a shorter amount of time.
Hey, I've actually been on Maxx Force! I went with my kids a couple of years ago for Halloween. I grew up here, and Great America has been my local theme park since it was called "Marriott's" Great America.
Before we got the Space Shot here, we had a drop of doom much like the Lex Luthor one. Its indoors though so it has a neat feature where the roof is extended to a custom height with a windowed skylight dome. Always enjoyed catching rays but on hot sunny days that skylight would heat up something fierce & made us regret eating beforehand

Have been to Fuji Q many times and have ridden Do Do (with the loop) several times and yes it was scary hard on the body
I found out about its closure last year after booking Japan for October, which is sad because I never thought I'd get to go fuji Q in my life, then I saw it had been closed for 2 years. But it was a cool sight to see :D
This coaster was on my bucket list! Sucks that it's leaving, but one of my bucket list coasters is Steel Vengeance. I have to make my way to Cedar Point one day
The launch took my breath away. Top hat happened a bit too quickly, then you get a few moments to consider WTF just happened before it re-enters the station. Loved it in 2010.
Watching this video I've come to realize just how lucky I was to get a ride on Top Thrill Dragster during my one and so far only trip to Cedar Point in 2019. There were times I thought the wait was too long, but stuck it out in the queue anyway.

Hadn't heard it was closed permanently yet, and while not quite unexpected, still sad. Have been to Japan many times now, and going to Fuji Q was still on my list.....but I left it out of recent trips just because I wanted to wait until Do-Dodonpa would be reopened....
If you ever find the time, would you consider making a video on places like Mount Olympus or Noah's Ark in the Wisconsin Dells? I haven't been able to find any historical videos about either, and it's my home state 😢
i rode do-dodonpa in 2018, i don't remember the track being especially rough, but it could be i was just disoriented from the launch so i didn't register it lol
