Sad that you find something of great value and try to do the right thing and get attacked and ridiculed and refused the benefits of the find. I guess the lesson here is if you legitimately find something like this just sell it to whoever will buy it and get the trouble out of your hands as quickly as possible.

As an individual who has specialized in gemology over the past 50 years, I looked with great interest at the photos of the emeralds. The great majority of what I saw, are what is termed "green beryl", and not emerald and they were so heavily fractured or included, that they would be of little interest to a lapidary for cutting. There were no close up photos, except for a brief view of the crystal which was freshly brought up from the sea floor, and it looked like a decent quality emerald, but I would say, the majority of the stones are pretty much junk beryl, with little value.

Agreed. 60 minutes gets more ratings for shoddy journalism than any true investigative journalism. I mean they pretended they took them to a jewelry store for appraisal, but edited out any worth of value.

you looked at video of the gems, yet plenty of gemologists got examined them by hand and scanning microscope - they are real columbian emeralds.

Bullshit! Those emeralds would be mine. Nobody else would have found them. I say finders keeper. If nobody can claim them, and prove they belong to them, then they are yours! Tell anyone who says they aren't, to kiss your ass! Just sell them and move to Belize.

Notice the potential value is based on the provenance of the stone and not the quality of the stones. So, these low grade emeralds will be worth a lot if they can tie the story to a sunken Spanish or Pirate ship, other than that, yes they are from Columbia but this means nothing as the quality of the stones are low and the whole scam will be based on the hope they can be tied to a ship. Smells like the guy used some of his own money to buy raw stones from Columbia and then investor money to purchase reject and subgrade stones from Columbia and got caught with his pants down when the enhancement compound was found on some of them indicating that Columbian stone cutters tried to enhance some substandard stones and when they couldn't just lumped them in with the others this guy bought.
