The Trickster (Mark Hamill) on the Flash

This video is NOT targeted at kids under the age of 13.
The Flash was TV show which ran one season from 1990 - 1991, based on the popular DC comic character of the same name (starring John Wesley Shipp in the title role as Barry Allen / the Flash). In 2014, another show was started (starring Grant Gustin in the title role) which is a part of the CW's Arrowverse. Both these shows brought on many different characters from DC Comics, but one of the most memorable villains was James Jesse a.k.a. the Trickster - who was played by actor Mark Hamill on both shows. Mark Hamill is of course best known for playing the Jedi Luke Skywalker in all the Star Wars movies (and the Mandalorian), but he's also known for his excellent job as the voice of the Joker in various Batman animations. He also voiced Chucky in the 2019 reboot of Child's Play, Skeletor on the new Netflix show Masters of the Universe: Revelation, Red Skull on The Super Hero Squad Show, Hobgoblin on Spider-Man: The Animated Series, and many more. This is not to mention that Mark Hamill did the voice of the Trickster in several different animations, including one on Scooby-Doo. It's also been said that when director Joel Schumacher directed Batman Forever, he's look at Mark Hamill's portrayal of the Trickster for inspiration on how he would direct Jim Carrey as the Riddler and Tommy Lee Jones as Two-Face.
So, there's nothing Smallville related here (my channel is most popular for Smallville videos). But I think this video should interest all DC fans - including Smallville.

    I definitely agree about how good his performances are and think he doesn't get enough credit. I also agree that his first go as the Trickster didn't catch me, but for me it was from disliking how different he was from the comic villain (a favorite of mine at that time) and still not being able to stop seeing Luke. But thanks to that performance it opened me up to accepting him as other parts. I also can 't help but see his partner as possibly influencing Harley Quinn's creation, but I might be way off on that.

    @@leafyishereisdumbnameakath4259 Visually, other than looking young and having wilder hair this cartoon one looks like him, but I guess the big difference with the live action portrayals and the comic character ( at least the one from when I collected his series, the Silver and Bronze Age eras) is that he was never shown as crazy or comical, mostly just gimmicky; he didn't have much by way of personality to distinguish himself actually. But these modern performances certainly are more zany and even scary (in a Joker-lite kinda way) and I bet more memorable to fans.

    Fans praise and talk about the Trickster all the time but rarely (if not never) mentions Prank. She's criminally underrated and deserves more love. I believe she's a better sidekick than Harley Quinn. After the original Flash series ended in 1991, I was hoping Prank would resurface on other media like Harley but never did. Even the Game Boy and Master System games did not feature her; only the Trickster. Prank did appear in the latest Flash series but 27 years was too little too late. What a shame.

Fans may disagree but I did not like the brainwashing plot of the Flash because she was completely neglected as a result. Maybe that was the charm but I really wanted her to "fire the candles" on the streets and put the city on trial with the Trickster, not Flash. I truly wanted the Bonnie & Clyde/ Joker & Harley moment throughout the episode but it didn't happen; only during the TV station hijack scene which was not enough. If I could remake that episode and change the script exactly the way I wanted it to be, I would.

    Question...I never watched the flash show, heardalot of good things and remember watching episodes of the 1990 show my uncle taped when I was like 5 in 1993... But since the original flash actor reprises his role as flash on another earth, how is that same actor playing Henry Allen in 2014 Flash's earth ???

  • @Joelikesmoviesnstuff

    @Joelikesmoviesnstuff

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hello. First off, actor John Wesley Shipp has now played THREE different characters on the current Flash show: Henry Allen (Barry's Father), Jay Garrick (the Golden Age Flash), and Earth 90 Barry Allen / Flash (the same character of the 1990 TV show)... How is this possible? I'll try to explain: In Season 1, John Wesley Shipp simply played the role of Henry Allen (Barry's father). In Season 2, Barry discovers there are alternate Earths where everybody has a doppelganger (who turns out differently than on Earth 1 - the Earth which Barry is from). Additionally, Barry discovers that his father Henry's mother's maiden name was Garrick. Then at the very end of the season, Barry discovers that his father's doppelganger of Earth 3 is a speedster with a different name: Jay Garrick (so for some reason, on Earth 3, his father's doppelganger took the last name of his mother instead of his father, and was given a different first name). Note: This was a change in story from the comics. In the comics, Henry Allen and Jay Garrick are NOT doppelgangers... Additionally, much later in Season 5, Barry met another speedster named Barry Allen (from Earth 90) who looks exactly like his father (and is the same character of the 1990 show, in continuity with that show). He was referred to as the "Earth 90 Flash." It was never confirmed if this Earth 90 Barry Allen was a doppelganger of Earth 1's Henry Allen, or if the fact that they look the same is simply coincidental... Okay. Did that make any sense?

    FYI, there was a "movie" released on VHS combining the two Trickster episodes from the 1990 Flash series. It actually worked pretty well, and the segue would've been almost flawless except that they had completely redesigned the show from a time-nonspecific look (with '50s-looking cars and buildings and props suggesting various other decades) to a more modern, real-life one at some point between episodes 12 & 22. Your synopses of the two episodes also makes these changes stick out like a sore thumb, so hopefully this comment will keep a few viewers from thinking they're caught up in the time stream...

    @@Joelikesmoviesnstuff yeah surprised this role was so influential. It's really disturbing and good. It may not be comic accurate but it is disturbing in the 90s show yet still entertaining and entertaining somewhat in the CW. I saw somewhat because they hardly use him and he doesn't have that many one-liners.

    Thanks! I'm glad you like the video... It's perfectly fine if you disagree with me that Hamill's performance was better than Ledger's (most people will agree with you that Ledger's was better). But what do you mean that my opinion doesn't make sense?

    @@Joelikesmoviesnstuff that role is so tiny he doesn't think it can be compared. I am stating what I believe his logic is, not my opinion. I kinda think his portrayal of trickster in the 90s show is probably just as good if not better than the joaquin phoenix joker. A disturbing mentally ill man but trickster is far more disturbing especially since he isn't comic accurate. He also is entertaining too in his trial of the trickster where he sports a cooler and less disturbing costume. Idk a man dressed like that is just disturbing. I never use that word but here it applies. As for Hamill's CW Trickster, I think it was a great performance. Idk if I'd put it equal to Ledger or better but I can see that totally. Considering you're talking about performance not writing. I may even agree.
