The Trickster: Consciousness, Meaning and Culture

In mythology and folklore, a trickster is a character in a story who exhibits a great degree of intellect or secret knowledge and uses it to play tricks or disobey normal rules and defy conventional behavior.
Tricksters, as archetypal characters, appear in the myths of many different cultures. Lewis Hyde describes the trickster as a "boundary-crosser". The trickster crosses and often breaks both physical and societal rules: Tricksters "violate principles of social and natural order, playfully disrupting normal life and then re-establishing it on a new basis.”
This is why tricksters are honored for the creation and regeneration of culture. One of the ways trickster myths can be viewed is as a story of meaning. Carl Jung believed that they are a story of an earlier state of consciousness.

The trickster is an important and necessary archetype to maintain balance in society but they are hated for what I believe are two reasons: Their intellect and the knowledge that they carry makes the common man feel insecure and stupid and they have the power to shake up the status quo which makes people uncomfortable even if that change in the status quo is much needed.

the claim that there is no true assertion." (Aristotle) "History abundantly shows that people's views of the universe are bound up with their views of themselves and of their society. The debate in cosmology has implications far beyond the realm of science, for it is a question of how truth is known. Your video has more relevance than most will ever realize. If you are truly an astute and unbiased observer? Destruction is necessary in our current condition, it is by being able to slowly detach and destroy our mental images that the separation between Creation and Creator slowly becomes harder to distinguish. In other words, the lack of self, and devotion towards Godly purposes, will likely remove or unlearn ill behaviors of greed, aversion, and delusion. If mankind can comprehend these things and slowly separate "I" from reality it will become amazing. But sadly, they are tied down by so much, therefore destruction is necessary. Destruction of their idols, destruction of their love for their idols and the return to the True Path, away from self-hood. So yeah, be prepared, because that feelin is deep and it is as vast as the sea. There's going to be a lot of sneaking around and playing along but its all for the fun of laughing at this life and proving the point that the societal understanding of reality is heavily flawed and we can be less condemned by our own afflictions we cause to ourselves and through others. By doing this, man can deny his own mind's understanding and live over his intellectual nature, free and joyful, and likewise on the outer, the god of this world will be denied and fall, his influence will diminish and reason will enter the world. The trickster will be king for an hour, only to return the planet to its rightful Creator, and then belial will become a man and shamefully struggle as we have. He will be in agony and suffer the life of a man, but he will rebel and take the world eventually. But all of this is worthwhile.

@Grey Philosopher It's the heart. Or the masses conciousness. That's why it'll be troublesome and very very difficult to put these things into play and give them murky water revelations. How to do so? How do you destroy a world? From the inside, out. It's not about me, in the end it's about you, and your world. And beyond that, it's about you and the very source of life, who else? The Creator is. But that's all nonsense, just another lunatic speaking, amirite? But in all sincerity, I want to leave this world a better place before I leave, and share everything I learned in devotion and silence. I'm going to free people from their own madness of the self and their hearts will be broken, but open.

@Grey Philosopher first comes destruction, the disassembling of societal norms and understandings. We are not the body, but something else, re-implementation of meaning in the world. And then the self being proven false. Then liberation begins. Then a re-creation begins and these inner motivated individuals will maintain that world. Influence from even beyond the 🪦

As for any outside forces, it would be quite pleasurable to see them realize their works have been in vain. The breaking down of their identities also and less motivated to influence. Neither man nor gods are free from the cycles of this living Cosmos, so all are capable of being destroyed, so long as they have a conciousness. Therefore even the gods fear a trickster.

This part confused me/went a bit over my head but I knew it didn’t resonate so I didn’t try and dissect it but maybe that means I should… I’m very open to hearing your perspective as I too felt iffy about this section….

@@jilloutthebox1381 for me, it was a bit too specific, mentioning the Good News of Jesus Christ as a direct example of what not to believe. But I am a little biased 😅

The music getting super loud around here doesn't help with trying to criticize it as it's coming. I've been getting better with it, but selective hearing is hard to master.

I was told about the trickster as a teenager. Was told by an ol lady who was my bosses wife , and closeish friends , explained was evil , because would give the feeling of a cat above you on stair case swatting your head on way down , in there house I learnt a little about it and in some ways I have grown up as this sorta way as in my youngest years I was up to no good , and I grasped a meaningthat took me to great lenghts , I learnt to stay away from my parents they made me feel different and my mom almost had a phsycic controll almost to copy her emotion or follow the imagination , my first house I woke up to missing shoes my blankets a mess , shooting from one state of mind to another , and it really became clear over time bonds with people , plus reki , and the belif you can do something or what ever without trying you can phsocologically mess with someone help them or controll even help your self . It's all in the state of mind and for me it's not always guess work but you look back sometimes cause of lazy and u realise why you felt the way you did . Also, useing intuition to mess around with SoMeone like telling them by instinct to turn down the music and if they follow you cause a reaction like makeing them seccount guess there intitive propertyy , the lieing of the feel , this is where my mind rests on the trickster innocent because he can see the good the fun , cold as ice because aslong as he sees no evil and has a clear objective anything goes . Thanks for a trip down meme lane

Thanks for the essay. Curious how the trickster has entered pop culture in the early 2000s and has had a stellar career ever since. But the most fascinating tricksters remain in real life, I think. Catiline, Sir Richard Francis Burton, Aleister Crowley, they all come with a biography full of mischief, failure and, most importantly, an incorrigible nature. And even a Donald Trump has the potential to be one. EDIT: the German Religion Ethnologist, Dr. Alexander Knorr, did an insightful and humorous take on mythological and real life tricksters, called "Metatrickster". I highly recommend it, not sure it is available in English, though.
