He just means that Cato, strongest voice for the republic, helped end the republic by driving Caesar into a corner and leaving the Rubicon as his only path out. Scoring an own goal to help end the governing status quo he, Cato, professed such love for. All these judges that would own Trump on behalf of the empire they profess to love so much do more damage to the empire than they do benefit the empire.

If I had to guess, the reason someone who was a fan of his earlier writing would begrudge the current is because Trump wasn't getting criticized in 2008.
