The Transit Every Airport Needs | Airport Rail Links

With airports often located away from a city's centre due to space constraints, people need a way to efficiently get between their gates & their final destinations. This is where the Airport Express comes in.

ℹ️Airport Express in Hong Kong is infrequent, you have to wait 10 mins for a train to get to the city from the airport and vice versa - it's biggest disadvantage. Reason being the Express shares tracks with a commuter railway called Tung Chung Line.

Tip for travellers to Vienna: the City Airport Train is also a tourist trap! It's literally just a repainted regional train that is a lot more expensive than the commuter line and high speed services that also stop there regularly. A CAT ticket costs €20 (€30 for a return ticket), a ticket for the RailJet high speed service to Vienna Central is ~€5, both of these trains take basically the same time to get into town.

What I don't like in Frankfurt is that the newly built terminal 3 doesn't get a train connection to the S-Bahn, although it wouldn't be that big thing to build a S-bahn tunnel to the S7. So instead of going directly into the S-Bahn, passengers must take the Aiport-monorail system and take The S-Bahn at the regular Airport Station.

One thing I love about the transit connection in Frankfurt is that you can actually buy your train ticket from many places in the country as part as your flight. That is super useful because Frankfurt is a major airport hub and it reduces the need for short haul connecting flight within the country when you can instead just hop on the ICE and go to other parts of the country.

Here in Germany, the airports are always connected via the normal train and bus networks, so you just pay the normal price. Just to chip in here in case if its not added yet: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia also has an airport express train, KLIA Express, that operates during pre-pandemic with a end-to-end journey from KL Sentral (where most train lines are) to the airport in less than 30 minutes. The service is complemented with an all-stop commuter service that stops between a regional bus interchange station, Putrajaya, an administrative capital, and a long-term car-park. Granted, the stops are not ideal, but the speed of the commute negates the experience. Like HK's airport express, you could have your luggage checked in before boarding the trains but thats no longer the case, and there is only the all-stop commuter service operating only.

After regular service (2-5AM) there's a train per hour to Amsterdam, Rotterdam & Utrecht. So any travelers coming here don't have to worry about the train connection to their destination.

About the statement that Oslo not have a main line link. I would say that it does. It has 3 lines (Lillehammer - Drammen) (Eidsvoll - Skien) (Eidsvoll - Kongsberg) running an hourly service, with the strange pattern of 10 min - 30 min - 20 min intervals. All of these services stops at all of the stations that the airport express stops at (except Stabæk). Max speed are 200 km/h instead of 210 km/h. And bonus to take this trains from the airport is that they do have connecting tickets to local transit between Eidsvoll and Asker, which the airport express does not have. The main reason to take the airport express to the airports is that there are always seats available and that they will guarantee to book you new tickets if you are delayed by the train for any reason and miss your flight (assuming you planned to be at the airport at the recommended time stated by the airline).

Someone living in Hong Kong here. On peak airport traffic days before the pandemic, HK International Airport still did not do much 24-hours in terms of passenger flights. Operations during the small hours between 2-6am are usually limited by noise level restrictions, so those hours are reserved for cargo flights and only a few transcontinental passenger flights landing usually from North America/Europe. Unless you happen to be on those flights arriving early morning, there won't be much people travelling from or to the airport, so the Airport Express here operating 24-hours do not sound too logical. It might work for Toronto-Pearson, but not for Hong Kong I feel.

I like the Tokyo Monorail to Haneda Airport. 3 transit patterns, local (all stops), rapid (major stops), and express (city terminus and airport stations). Though Japanese train options are wonderful anyway (except within the major cities during morning peak). Kansai, Narita and Haneda airports all have multiple rail options, both local, rapid and express, with at least 2 different companies serving each. Melbourne finally approved an airport rail, they started building it a few months ago, and there are still people claiming it is "too soon". Canberra only has a bus. T_T Which only goes to the airport because it serves the government offices next door.

Airport express services are often more expensive because business travelers are short on time. I much prefer the Swiss approach that just has all S-Bahn and long distance trains stop at the airport. This way you can truly get anywhere at a fixed price. But then again, Zurich airport is also a huge hub for buses, so the integration is not just for the aviation sector.

I automatically thought of copenhagen! I've landed at the airport twice, once at peak hours and the other after a 6hr delay after midnight. It was extremely pleasant both times and I waited no more than ten minutes waiting for the train to come back it was so frequent. I often think of it when traveling nowadays since while the Bay Area is decently connected via BART to most airports, San Jose is completely left out of the loop. It'd be nice to see the SJC airport as well connected as the cities in this video, especially since it is a huge employer in the area and the experience of slogging through traffic in the Bay just to wait another hour going through security and through check in would give anyone anxiety...

Yes - of all the cities I've visited, Copenhagen has one of the best airport connections ever. A train every 10 minutes that goes right to the city center in 10 minutes. Or, you can ride the train the other direction and end up in Sweden. Even at 5:30 AM, when I needed to leave for the flight back, the train was still every 10 minutes. My only criticism is that the downtown station did not have good signage, which left me very worried on the way back that I would accidentally get on the wrong train and end up missing my flight. In the end, that didn't happen, but some basic wayfinding signs in the station saying where to go to get to the train that goes to the airport, would be very much appreciated.

The line also provides access to a closer, less busy HSR station in the opposite direction. Fares range from US$1 to US$5. They also offer in-town check-in services, albeit only for a handful of airlines).

@@katrinabryce Yeah, pretty much this, but with one added wrinkle in Heathrow's case (as an open-access operator) that doesn't apply to Gatwick Express (which is part of the Southern franchise): Heathrow Airport wholly-owns the HX service and brand (and contracts it out to GWR), so while they do pay some lip-service to the Elizabeth and Piccadilly lines on their website, they have a vested interest in pushing HX in their own marketing where they can. The fact that the Liz goes to Paddington too does also make it easier to brush it under the rug as the 'worse option' for getting into Zone 1.

We were forced to do a linear transfer because the last section of the shuttle (from the last parking lot to the mainline rail station) could only operate single track due to poor maintenance so they had a single train running back and forth acting as a shuttle within a shuttle. We should have just taken the bus to Newark Penn Station!

I bet that airport trains are a way easier sell to council members and the public at large, to get a city started with heavier mass-transit options. Seattle's Link rail (which currently only has one line) started as basically an airport-to-city-center line. I see people getting on at the northernmost rail head (the complete opposite end from the airport) with their suitcases all the time, and for my upcoming holiday travel, I am absolutely going to use the rail to get to the airport. Seattle is expanding their rail network, and has great expansion plans over the next decade-plus, but they started with basically the city-center-to-airport route. I flew into St. Louis once, and I remember their MetroLink (at the time, also a single line) went from... the airport through a handful of destinations in town. I remember basically nothing about how St. Louis is laid out, so I have no idea if those destinations were well-thought-out, or just in an expedient straight line. But my sister only had to walk a few blocks from her apartment to meet me at the train stop closest to her, instead of getting in the car and fighting traffic all the way to and from the airport.

The Elizabeth Line now runs from Heathrow through central London to Abbey Wood. You can change at Whitechapel for trains to Shenfield. Although it's much slower than the Heathrow Express, it only takes 15 minutes longer, with no need to change trains at Paddington to get to destinations such as Tottenham Court Road, Bond Street, Farringdon and Canary Wharf. There is cross platform interchange with the Central line at Ealing Broadway in the eastbound direction. It costs much less than the Heathrow Express, but more than the Piccadilly line, because the branch from the Great Western main line to the airport is owned by Heathrow.

I think Vienna is an interesting case. The Vienna S-Bahn always went to the airport, but it was slow with many intermediate stops. Tickets from the central-ish station "Landstraße" cost 4,50 €. The ride is 22 minutes. Then in 2003 they opened the "City Airport Train" (CAT) - also from Landstraße. The ride takes 16 minutes (barely any faster), but it's expensive. Tickets are now 14,90 € one way, or 24,90 with return tickets. The trains have wide aisles and have a lot of luggage room - but they are double-decker. It does have Check-In a the train station though. Then in 2012-2015 they opened the new Vienna main station. And now many high-speed "Railjet" trains do not terminate at the main station, but continue non-stop to terminate at the Airport. For that purpose the did build some new rail corridor, to connect existing ones. The ride is just 14-15 minutes and only costs 4,50 €. So it's both cheaper and faster than the CAT. I don't know how that one is still in business. Probably clueless tourist looking for the airport express.
