The Train To Nowhere - FlindersLINK Extension

Opening last year at the end of 2020, the Flinders line promised to completely change the public transport network around Adelaide's southern suburbs, but has it? This video details some of the issues I have with the extension and how I believe it's failing it's potential, by being too far away to make almost any sense.

From the perspective of a person that uses bikes and trains to get around the most, I think the flinders line is great. As I cannot take my bike on the bus, I use the flinders line to get to the belair line to get back up the hill from the sheperds hill recreation park. My only two problems would be that no express services are run, and ofc the service frequency lmao.

I've actually found it quite useful for bike rides. If you ever need to access Shepard's hill for MTB it's really close, and after a finishing a ride further up north its been really convenient to hop on Flinders from Adelaide Showground after riding down Greenhill Rd, or hopping on at Emerson after riding down the Old Freeway bike path, and then ride up the expressway bike path, accessing Aberfoyle, Flagstaff and Happy Valley. It's a pretty niche use, but its actually been fairly useful for me.

You need to consider South Rd traffic. You try catching a 721f, 722f or 719 at 5pm on a weekday. The train is much quicker for peak travel if you wish to go to FMC interchange. Also due to CBD and South Rd traffic the buses will often run late.

Just like the Fitzroy line which took 30 minutes compared to 10 mins by tram. The Fitzroy line was a freight line for most of it’s life. Likewise the Mornington line which ran in a big arc and took 30 minutes from Frankston when buses provided a more direct service.

Perhaps a Flinders Station Interchange could work as a double interchange with the existing Flinders Medical Interchange? The two Flinders Interchanges wouldn't be much further apart than the Noarlunga Centre and Colonnades Interchanges are now.

What they should’ve done was build the train station above the current bus interchange, especially since they had to elevate so much anyway. This also would’ve made expansion of the line easier in the future, as they could’ve continued running it above the street to the south.

The gradients are too steep to have extended it to flaggy and Aberfoyle. A line once did service near Aberfoyle Park, it pulled off the seaford line near Marino due to favourable topography. Not only is the land to steep, it also is a highly protected area with national parks and nature reserves covering the hill side. The reason Aberfoyle Park has such frequent busses is to make up for the fact its borderline impossible to get a railway to it

I find the flinders line useful which I use everyday but agree to transfer to a bus it’s a pain that the walk to the bus interchange is a fair walk. Also wish they could have made it a two track, maybe that may have increased train times on the line. Currently am annoyed and wondering why seaford line can operate and not flinders on weekdays. At $140m to build, the line should have been built better _and_ for two-way running its entire length at that. A solution (albeit expensive one) would have been to put the station in a tunnel from just West of the current station and have the line terminate directly underneath the bus interchange. As part of future-proofing, a stub tunnel/turnback would have facilitated future network expansion and/or line connections as well as simply allowing shorter headway between services. Why do Australian transport planners keep making the same mistakes?! 🤦🏻‍♂️ Very interesting video and I agree with you - I also really like the quality of both the new station and Adelaide’s rolling stock. 👍🏻

  • @HappyfoxBiz

they should have made this into a Salisbury interchange type thing where the bus location is changed to that location and then they branch out to every other location, and possibly have a tram running around there too. they only did one track as well, so they did the southern expressway all over again with the single track, it's proving to be quite popular but because it's elevated for much of the track it's going to be quite the penny to modify it, especially in areas that are... compressed near the track But at the same time, they could move the interchange to underground, where the buses roll through and pick up, drop off passengers and take them onwards and upwards, while leaving everything above to be developed, the carpark can be moved under ground to be beside the interchange in the future when the uni decides to finally get off it's tush to make use of the land, and possibly add commercial ventures in the locale as well, I want Adelaide to be a living breathing city but having a single line and not be light rail is just really REALLY short sighted of them especially when they could have spent a little more money and got a duplication.

Very well presented, but recently the government tried to make changes to public transport as a whole with proposed bus route changes and force new bus routes to train and tram, the back lash from the bus public transport user's was enormous and caught out many in government and DIT / Adelaide Metro and realised it was not going to work as it was going to be political suicide in many ways as 70% of user's it would have increased travel times with multiple transfers to get to intended destination, second there was going to be a reduction in patronage as those who could would drive instead and blown out the government's carbon emissions reduction targets more political suicide.
