The tragic story of the Bidoul tribe | SLICE | FULL DOCUMENTARY

In the early 80's, Jordan and Unesco expelled the humble people of the B’doul tribe from the ancient city of Petra to declare it as a world heritage site.
While hundreds of thousands of tourists from all over the world flock to the site, the local community seeks to rebuild their life on the tiny territory allocated for them.

What can you expect from a UN department?, just like the OMS, UNICEF, etc, UNESCO is interested in everything except human life or culture. The inhabitants of those places become displaced, it's pure and simple gentrification endorsed by international organizations and governments, local people becoming servants in their own land, the worst thing is, tourists don't know the damage they do to locals.

Is it better for there to be no tourism then? I wonder if necessary changes create good but at a huge cost. A case of damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Its awful how many Indigenous cultures around the world have been removed and most destroyed all for tourism when so many of our ancestors moved around the world peacefully without destroying others and Im not talking about wars conflicts or colonizing Im talking of those curious Ancestors that went around this World just to SEE.

This story is similar to indigenous tribes all over the world n the ones that leave deeper into the lands it’s funny how the government always finds their way to the individuals trying to distance themselves from modern day civilization

@ A.Wootz: Yes, I agree with you! He is a man of wisdom. Sadly his vision and philosophy will not win in the end. As an anthropologist I have witnessed it all over our world, including my country of Canada. Traditional Indigenous Peoples NEVER win in the end. Once governments and entrepreneurs interfere for $, so many traditional cultures lose 'their true identities'. And unfortunately I must include many of my own profession! :( [But that is for another discussion]

I'm sure most reasonable people are fine with living their lives without visiting Petra considering it means displacing people who have lived there for centuries and degrading it with the constant traffic that tourism brings. The truth of the matter is it's not about preservation. It's a money grabbing opportunity for the government and UNESCO. If it was about preservation, they would have left it to the people who have been taking care of it all this time.
