The TRAGIC Execution Of Margaret Ward - 'The Pearl Of Tyburn'

Previously we've looked at the Tudor period and we've learned how brutal it was, but also how religion dominated the era. It was a time of great religious intolerance brought about when Henry VIII decided to break from Rome and usher in the English Reformation. His work towards Protestantism and outlawing Catholicism was carried on by Edward VI, but then shockingly Mary I/Bloody Mary would restore Catholicism.
When Mary died, Elizabeth I was left with a broken country. She needed to unite both Protestants and Catholics, but when she came up with her Religious Settlement it still basically banned elements of the Catholic faith. For this worship went underground, and Catholic priests were arrested all over England and were subject to harsh imprisonments and treatments. Some were even tortured and eventually executed for refusing to acknowledge the Queen's changes.
Today we look at the story of Saint Margaret Ward, a lady who was Catholic but decided to attempt to break a Catholic priest out of prison. This priest had been brutally tortured and Margaret decided to try and help him escape by smuggling a rope into his cell. Miraculously the priest would escape, however Margaret would not. She was arrested and sentenced to death for her crimes. So join us today as we look at the 'Tragic Execution of Margaret Ward.'

This wasn't long enough of a drop to break the neck and thus led to the condemned being strangled. The poor souls were left kicking in midair for upwards of 20 minutes. Other gruesome side effects were content elimination of the bladder and bowels as well as bulging eyes and blackened protruding tongues.

What I don't understand is even if any protestant back then escapes prison and is on the run, and settles into a new town elsewhere, then doesn't that mean they're still screwed once they're observed to be practising or expressing non-catholic practices in the new space within which they then would dwell? Pretty much sooner or later they'd have to fess up to their own true beliefs for fear of being punished by God, which by their refusal to want to displease the God of their faith, inadvertently incriminate themselves in the eyes of the locals and thus be imprisoned and sentenced to death yet again. Utter madness.

There were very few religious wars or suppressions, and all were highly localised. Still, if spend over a century constantly bombing and invading muslim-majority countries, undermining their society and destroying their democratic governments, I'd guess that would erode tolerance to some extent.

How ridiculous - I was an Anglican - my boyfriend a Catholic. We went to each others Churches and could hardly tell the difference - only crossing your chest before sitting - Anglicans don't do this. No difference in service - Holy Communion is both Anglican & Catholic. They both worship Jesus and believe in the Resurrection and virgin birth. Difference - Catholics go to Confession - Anglicans forgive themselves - but only if you truly Repent. (I spent my childhood worrying Jesus might know if I wasnt truly repentant 😱. The difference is not worth dying for.

Religion? How many have died with the word of God on their tongues? Shame on humanity....shame. The god I worship would never allow the horrible, tortuous things happen to pl....no no no....the god I worship is a loving forgiving god and expels those that go against his rules..like murder, rape, pedophiles, serial murders..et etc etc...oh no, he has a special place for them.

Margaret, we are giving you a gentle out here. We want you to go to a Protestant Church Service. "You are telling me that I must spend an hour on Sunday worshipping God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit in a Protestant House of God?" Yes, Margaret. That is all. "I would rather die!"

I have to admit, after hearing these stories, I do wonder if I would be as brave as these people. As long as you believe in God, which I always have🙏, what difference does it really make? Catholics, Protestants. Your still worshipping and believing in Jesus Christ & God. If you torture some poor sod, he's going to admit to just about everything and anything! Not sure i could be as brave as these poor soles!!

King Henry VIII's "work towards Protestantism"? Come off it! The much-married monarch may have restored the Church of England to spiritual independence from the See of Rome, but his particular brand of "Nationalised Anglo-Catholicism" left no room for Protestant heresy. One suspects that King Henry VIII had more Protestants tortured and burned for Heresy than did his elder daughter Mary. Just for the record, the first English monarch NOT to burn Protestants for Heresy was King Charles I ... and look what happened to him!
