I’ve seen the crash many times but I’m glad to finally know a bit about him

RIP Bruce. And RIP to the legendary William Caleb Yarborough. One of the 10 greatest NASCAR drivers ever IMO.

I’ve covered Bruce last year, and while researching, seeing images from 1983 was just sad and scary. Thanks for making your version of the Bruce Jacobi video!

Today a safety failure of that level would lead to so much research and change. Back then it was just "so it goes."

Sad that in the video of the crash, the commentators said that had Bruce not found a ride, he'd join them in the booth to commentate.

Well done and thoroughly researched video. I remember seeing Bruce race at Trenton Speedway back in the 60s.

i met Bruce in 1978 at Indy in my Dad's Bosses motorhome. We were camping at the American Legion Post and he knew my Dad's boss, I remember being so excited as he was a real race car driver. I have a picture of Bruce and his wife and Bruce and I, as I recall they were both very down to earth. I was sad when I heard of his accident and would always try and find out about his condition. A tough way to live out the rest of your days.

Maybe do something on Bobby Wawak and his career ending crash, that's something that isn't talked about much

Bruce Jacobi passed when Daytona Speedweeks was still a dangerous time. A lot of smaller track racers would show up to Daytona with less experience and underfunded cars trying to live the dream and make the Daytona 500, only to wreck out and sometimes end up badly injured, sometimes fatally. Tab Prince, Friday Hassler, and Ricky Knotts come to mind that lost their lives during the pursuit of the coveted "500" starting spot. Bruce was certainly talented and proved it, though, with his Indy and Daytona 500 runs previously. He should not be forgotten, and content like this helps that cause.

I never knew the coma part of this story. Sounds like Rick Baldwin's story.

Bruce drove my father's Oldsmobile tornado at the famous pikes peak hill climb from 1867-1968 also drove a few other times from riverside to Indiana I was 8 at that time and after finishing pikes pike I rode all the way down the mountain with him in that car didn't get any better then that for a 8 year old boy growing up in the 60 and 70s

At the time of his horrific qualifying race crash in 1983, Bruce Jacobi was involved with the production of races on TV, having been a part of ABC's production crew for quite a number of years, and it was mentioned during the broadcast of the qualifying races in 1983 that, if he had not found the ride that he'd have his ill-fated crash in, he was looking to be a part of CBS' production team for the Daytona 500 that year, in addition to his role with ABC Sports. It might have led to one of the more callous comments ever made on a racing broadcast when, near the end of the 1983 Rebel 500 at Darlington, the first race ABC did after Jacobi's horrific wreck, Sam Posey mentioned that he had driven in "one race too many".

Posey's comment might have been callous, but I remember thinking the same thing about Neil Bonnett after his fatal crash. All of Bonnetrt's friends worked hard to get him that ride when, being professionals, they should have known better than anyone that he had no business at that point in his life being in a race car.

@@RRaquello The tumble Bonnett took at the 1993 DieHard 500, the same race during which there was another incident that resulted in Stanley Smith suffering a skull fracture and Jimmy Horton's car actually leaving the track, probably should have convinced him not to continue his comeback attempt. But I think he continued it for two reasons. The first was that he wanted to at least attempt to race at Indianapolis, something he had never done and which fellow Alabama Gang members Bobby and Donnie Allison each did on two occasions, and the second was that he wanted to retire on his own terms, and not as a result of injuries suffered in a crash.

Re: The wreck with Rick Newsom at Charlotte. I helped build Newsom's car and worked with his team between 1973 and 1976. Contrary to your report, Rick was injured in that wreck. He sustained a broken lower leg, which wasn't diagnosed for another day or so. The car was destroyed. I didn't see the wreck, but I was there when they brought the car back to the garage, and was there when Rick met with Gazaway to discuss the incident. Can't recall if it was J.D. McDuffie or Buddy Arrington who watched the wreck from behind Bruce and Rick in T3/T4, but whichever one it was told Rick and me that Bruce never lifted, as if he didn't see Rick's car against the T4 wall.

RIP Bruce. I have a photo of Bruce flipping his sprint car at Salem Speedway in either 1972 or 1973. Presumably this is a USAC race.

At 2:01...the photo of him being lifted out of the car was taken by my father and is part of my personal collection. That's not the only picture you used that my father took. You didn't get it from "NASCAR, NASCAR Media Group, Fox, NBC, NBC Sports, ESPN..." Looks like somebody else stole it and put it on Pinterest...

Anyone know the history of the car Bruce crashed at Daytona? The paint scheme makes me think this might have been a former Petty Enterprises car.

The pic at 2:06 is not Indy. Looks like Milwaukee to me.

Different spelling, but NASCAR doesn't care about its fans... It is all about selling you alcohol, fast food, and fake drama from a fake rulebook. NFJJ should make a video geared toward your long-term health, and how you should stop following and fantasizing about a game. I didn't watch the video, but it popped up on my home page; just came here to comment the truth to the idolaters who worship people driving in circles and do zero good for society.
