Great video, love the knowledge drop from the long term driver.
Really well done video and a great series.

Another enjoyable and interesting video. I look forward to Tuesdays to see what David finds next!
I just googled and found out the ONLY charging station in Denver is very close to where I live in Lakewood! Finding one of these in Denver just became a non zero possiblity....

They should be giving these away for free at this point
Saw a video the other day. The guy had 29 mile range till empty. He filled the Hydrogen cell up. He then had a 348 mile range. It cost $180 to fill tank.
Impromptu Mirai owner interview! Fantastic automotive journalism from a fantastic automotive journalist!
Is there a h2 filling station at Toyota dealer?
I would have walked away when I saw it was missing a valve stem cap!
This is so good
Creating hydrogen from electrolysis isn't the only way to create it. Microalgae like cyanobacteria and green algae can produce biohydrogen after derivation of their photosynthetic metabolism. Besides, microalgae can also be used as feedstock for biohydrogen production by microbial dark fermentation. Biohydrogen from microalgae is renewable.
OK so now the real question is whether the hot water exiting its butt is potable? And if not, why the dedicated button?

So it doesn’t pee in your garage you can let it out elsewhere
Hydrogen is made from fossil fuels and gives you around the same mileage, price and pollution as a gas-powered car. Or it's made using electrolysis of water using electricity like David described. Hydrogen produced this way is 2 to 3 times as expensive. Hydrogen is a dead-end for at least another 15 years until it can catch up to battery tech. And battery tech is currently improving at a faster rate than hydrogen tech. So that catching up is about hydrogen becoming feasible at large scale, not even about matching or outdoing batteries.

The only way hydrogen works is if we have absurdly abundant electricity that's generated cleanly. Maybe if we had massive nuclear plants all over the place, or if nuclear fusion ever becomes viable. Battery chemistry sucks and is approaching its limits - I suspect people are going to be disappointed by all of the supposed innovations "around the corner" that aren't going to be viable. The only real problem with hydrogen fuel cells is the hydrogen supply itself - if that were sorted out it would be the best of both worlds.

@@mikeydude750 > only way hydrogen works is if we have absurdly abundant electricity Very true. Battery tech gets replaced every 10 years. Looking at history, the current lithium based battery tech approaching it's limit means their replacement will soon become widely available. Looking at the history of hydrogen tech is will stay roughly where it was 20 years ago.

@@zanthraxnl Hydrogen fuel cells are a fairly mature technology, even storage isn't really an issue based on the Mirai and the Clarity's experiences, it's just the hydrogen supply and distribution that needs to be worked on. I could see a future where we have tons of excess cheap carbon-free energy that's used for electrolysis to generate hydrogen for fuel cell vehicles. Probably not every vehicle - but fuel cells definitely have a place for where battery vehicles might not be desirable.

I think hydrogen starts to make sense for larger vehicles, at least potentially. It scales up well to meet some cases where battery energy density struggles. It makes no sense for passenger cars though, and makes even less sense by the year.
@mikeydude750

@@ADefenestrator It makes sense for long-range vehicles that need to fill up quickly. Battery recharging is never going to be as fast as filling a tank.
Why would any dealership pay anything for one of these cars? They are worthless and will likely never be sold.
That has all the telltale signs of kid damage back there. Or drunk friends, who knows, could be wine. Edit- how did you find the most camera friendly lady just randomly filling up?
2022 february toyota sold mirai at half price, 25000 with 15000 in fuel card. so second hand become 12-15000 ish is reasonable.

would it be worth to get just for the three year fuel credit?? seems pretty reasonable to have it as a back burner?

Free fuel but finding a Hydrogen station is tough and since there are so few you would probably have to wait in line. I heard hydrogen stations are being removed because it's not profitable. I much rather pay $50 a month on electricity for my EV than this.
Major problem is Toyota not going to build thousands of hydrogen refill station
I’m glad a bought a new Civic back in 2007
i got 3 years of free charging for my EV. It kinda sucks, and I fill up at my house its way better. Hydrogen cars are insane. only a fool would buy one at this point.
I was disappointed the engine compartment was as dirty as a gasoline car, and that you only put $7 worth in the tank. Ass GAS or Grass, as the saying goes.
Turns out hydrogen is very expensive to put in the car, still the best way forward though
Agree
For an early model, 240miles is great. Investment will increase improvements and efficiency of both milage and hydrogen production
180 dollars for 300 mile range
But why? Nissan does have gasoline non hybrid electric cars, calls it epower. So why this?
How fortuitous to run into another Mirai owner while refueling. This is really interesting. I do think hydrogen would be a better long term strategy than pure EV, but we are not going that direction and there is no infrastructure.

Hydrogen makes sense for semi trucks where fueling at such large capacity stations makes sense, pricing for consumers will just make more sense to tap off the grid than to create a specialty product.
My brother traded his 2022 back dealer. What a waste of time and money
$0.51/Mile for Hydrogen fuel. My 2006 Buick gets 15 mpg, so that's about $0.31/mile. I don't like the styling.
$110 for 240 miles of driving! That’s 45 cents per mile. Charging my EV at home comes out to 4 cents per mile. The Mirai is 10 times higher. TEN! No wonder people are dumping these cars when the fuel promo runs out. You’d have to be soft in the head to buy one. An F-350 would be cheaper.
If you could rip out the fuel cell and tanks and put in a big battery you'd have a cheap EV.

Cheap, hey? You costed EV batteries lately? Also, stupid idea.
They are messing you guys up!! It can be measured in pounds!!!! We use the metric system here in Canada, Why all of a sudden they decide to use Kilograms!!! In Vancouver it cost less than $50.00 to refill that car!!!! You guys are getting Jacked on the H2O prices down there!!!
Combustion engines are going nowhere. Good.

Makes sense lol
Can you use a portable generator for electricity to get to a refueling station? Toyota had water in their brains for foisting this on the public without making sure there is refueling infrastructure.
Horribly inefficient technology. Great job on the video. How has this been kept quiet so long. That's why it costs $0.50 / mile just for the fuel. It doesn't drive at all like a Tesla. A Tesla is twice as quick. A full tank of hydrogen, 5 kg * $35 / kg = $185 + tax and you can drive maybe 250 miles. Charging a model Y Tesla at home you can drive 6,000 miles for the same $185. Figure out how to pull out the hydrogen tanks and put batteries in that car and it would be a slow battery powered car.
Once the free fuel is gone, it loses it's value.
I hate that you cant plug it in!
@jamesvandamme7786

Yeah, that would make it almost useful.
I got a 2021 Limited with 8k miles. Sale price 23k. Will be getting the tax credit of 4500. I got the 15k fuel card. This car is good for a secondary vehicle. I put miles on this car and my Avalon is keeping its value by keeping its low miles. Its worth it forsure. Do the math 😉
Everyone commenting on this is so freakin' stupid it makes my head hurt. Go look up how many hydrogen fueling stations there are...in Japan. Bitching about prices in the US, hell, we can't even get infrastructure for EVs right. We could have fields of renewables set up all over the US for a fraction of the cost of our military's budget, but we won't.
People are pigs to treat any car like that. H is number 1 on the periodic table, it's everywhere. Haha, yes, I know....
You literally have to be a fool to buy this car🤷♂️😂🎉😅
4300 lbs?????? ...and EV naysayers complain about "the added weight of EV's" Sheesh.
Anybody can sing the hydrogen solution just like people did the battery solution. The test model of yours is essentially 8 years old. Which addresses the long term need all around for the environment and the never discussed human capital ie slave labor used to Garner the materials required to mfg batteries? I still feel hybrid is the best solution.
