Jia took a break and now she’s back on track. Her fame won’t be short lived, she’s paving her path all the way again and she’s receiving a ton of positive attention, at least from foreign fans. She has now a team working for her, a new home and she’s posting videos on her channel every week like she used to. She’s slowly building her image again and she might not recover her hype entirely but I believe some brands will “forget” what happened and still collaborate with her, she’s always a hot topic and extremely marketable. Her “cancellation” was a very traumatic experience to her but I believe she might get back where she was

Even before the controversies never understood why the fuzz with her, maybe the editors portrayed very badly. The other two lady contestant's were way more likeable, whereas she just stood there with a plain face🤷🏻‍♀️. So when you said the international fan will carry her, what's that's mean, in the end what will be the result of supporting her in a movie career ??? I don't think so, singing for releasing a music album, neither. What is her talent? What does she do? 🤷🏻‍♀️.

Being able to do makeup looks and put a nice and stylish outfit together IS a talent. It’s art at the end of the day. Even before she went on Singles Inferno she was popular in South Korea and participated in Variety Shows, she wouldn’t be invited for no reason lol. She’s charismatic and alluring, there’s no science behind it 🤷🏼‍♀️ the “”result”” of supporting her would be what she already had, fame and success. She was as famous as an idol

I always felt like Koreans hold their celebrities to too high of a standard, it's not human and comes of as inauthentic. I hope things will change because it's not healthy for our favorite artists to constantly be watched and scrutinised and they are regular human beings who are bound to make mistakes. Soojin from I-dle didn't deserve to get cancelled. The rumors and accusation of her were never verified. But cancelling someone for mistakes during childhood is just wrong, we can't expect people to never make mistake from birth.

Korea and China take it to another level when it comes to the cancel culture. It’s like no other country and to such an extreme level. No one can be seen as imperfect nor can they ever make any mistakes regardless of how big or small. At the end of the day these Celebs are human like everyone else and the fans/media need to stop portraying them as anything other… the criticisms are too severe and for something that no other country would even blink at eye at it will end your career in Korea. Appreciate the celebs for who they are and stop putting such unrealistic expectations on them.

I personally think that the cancel culture is very toxic and that it does more harm to people than good. Of course I agree that everyone should be held accountable for wrongdoings and sometimes it’s even fair to stop promoting/supporting an artist and boycott their work. The problem, however, is that the public doesn't hold themselves accountable to the same standards as they do with artists. I get that celebrities are role models to others but people shouldn't expect them to be perfect. But what bothers me the most is that whenever a celebrity is exposed as a bully, everyone jumps on the hate bandwagon and sends the artist death threats and disgusting hate messages. Cyber Bullying a bully isn’t okay either and I am simply tired of this hypocritical pattern.

  • 2 жыл бұрын

Agreed 100%. The weird thing is celebrities themselves never covet being role models. The public make assumptions by itself and then punish or reward by itself🤷‍♀

Cancel culture is definitely a sensitive aspect due to the domino effect it has on someone’s reputation and image! Social media perpetuates this notion because someone will try to uncover a small detail of negativity and use it for their campaign without any context. K-pop culture has become a prevalent scene throughout the world that many don’t realize the adverse implications: physical, mental, and social it has on the artists/celebrities. The pressure to maintain the demand of the growing audiences takes a serious toll on these performers. Being a celebrity in todays modern generation is difficult! Love these topics and issues; especially you discussing it objectively, Sienna!

Thank you for pointing out the cultural aspects of cancel culture in Korea. I think people are mostly jealous because some issues are just so small and fixable. Just saying Im a fan and I like the nice shows, the slow burn love portrayed in the dramas and the lack of explicit content. In the U.S. since there’s less of a moral obligation to cancel certain celebrities I think a lot of people have gotten passes they didn’t deserve. It’s why the #MeToo movement had so much momentum. If someone doesn’t face repercussions immediately they never learn from their actions and victimize even more people. I don’t agree with how celebrities in South Korea are treated in situations where it’s only speculation, but I sort of envy how easily someone is removed from a position of power when they’re found to be an abuser etc. But then I wonder who are the celebrities that are given a pass when information isn’t made public.

I think there are celebrities (be it idols, stars or influencers) who should be called out for bad behavior/ actions but not necessarily cancelled. The problem with this cancel culture paired with social media is it becomes an online mob, that ends up in bullying whether that person is guilty or innocent.

I first saw Jia on Single's Inferno. To preface this, I had no idea why all the guys were falling all over each other for her when she seemed to be the least interesting person on the show when all she did was act aloof. There was a gorgeous neurosurgeon in-training there too and a girl who owns her own gym and does jiu jitsu for crying out loud while the other girls seemed a lot more down to earth. That said, I heard about the "big news" of her wearing fake products or whatever and that just seemed so overblown and fueled by haters. The amount of airtime it got was ridiculous. I have no respect for the guys on the show who then immediately dropped her like a radioactive potato and unfollowed her on social media when they were kissing the ground she walked on the week before. Japan does this too and I never understood why people care so much when celebrities do what regular people can do normally.

I think it’s pretty obvious why all the guys feel for her. South Korea is a place where money, status and looks are everything and hold too much power. The guys saw Jia and ran after her because let’s be real, they were gold diggers and social climbers. She looked hella expensive and refined, they smelled the money and besides she is stunning after all. When that guy she picked in the end unfollowed her immediately after the controversy arose just confirms this. They did the other girls dirty in the show by leaving Jia for last when meeting the participants, everyone was stunned by her appearance. Celebrities are put on unrealistic expectations and standards and must keep up with them, that’s why. They must have this perfect put together fabricated image otherwise they get dumped if they look human, it’s a mad concept 🤷🏼‍♀️

And we have boycott culture. Previously it wasn't so effective but nowadays it is. While it is different from korean cancell culture because boycott of a certain celebrity or their films or songs happen because they have given a statement that is politically wrong and hurt sentiments of the people in real time. While in Korea people can be cancelled ona rumor. Here celebrities are forgiven their character flaws and public gives them a chance but sometimes celebrities go out of the way to disrespect a particular community that's when the boycott trend starts. Korea is a bit harsh for celebrities because even small actions are taken out of context and seen as a character flaw and they are cancelled. That's extreme because an entertainers character doesn't affect the public while a politicians affect greatly.

Unfortunately, this largely boils down to bullying and the bullies are usually very weak mentally, so they take it out on any target they can find. This is kind of strange because in all the reality and variety shows/ youtube vids I've seen from S.Korea, majority of the younger generation seem OBSESSED with designer clothing. There are even idol songs criticising this "greed" for richer things and how it was difficult to fit in with others if you weren't of a higher social standing. Ironically, I've also come across a lot of Koreans wearing fake designer clothing, especially rookie idols. I've even seen videos of shopping districts FILLED with fake designer clothing. I don't understand why a non-celebrity can do it and live as they want but a celebrity can't? What does her wearing fake designer things have to do with her wanting to open up her own shop? A MAJORITY of the population doesn't have the financial comfort to buy designer wear, not to mention, if you're smart with your budget, you'd know it isn't a feasible investment. This is like all the white birds looking at an equally white bird and calling it black. All this REEKS of jealousy and misplaced self-rightousness.

In contrast to all the income they create for the country, what Kcelebrities go through seems extremely creepy to me. Cancel culture is just one of the many injustices they meet. I was so upset when I heard what B.I. had to go through. He was basically the backbone of that band and what? "He allegedly tried to buy pot"? I was like are you people serious? It is extremely absurd in western countries I think. Celebrities should be able to choose how to live their own lives, as long as they don't promote their lifestyle as "the one to go with". And they are most certainly eligible for privacy. The ones who must be cancelled and criminally dealt with are those who leak private conversations and matters.

Well that has been discussed multiple times but I can’t stress this enough, it’s basically adoring someone, putting them on a pedestal while feeding their egos to the fullest, obsessing over them and as soon as possible they get brutally pushed outta the pedestal by minor or stupid reasons, sometimes just because. It’s always happening, especially with newer celebrities and actors like Doja Cat when she lost weight, Sydney Sweeney when she had a mental breakdown bc someone called her ugly completely out of pocket (like???), Billie Ellish (everyone loved her but suddenly hated her and called her songs cringy while cancelling her), Charli D’Amelio, Song Jia, etc. Every one of them were loved and then teared apart. Great video as always Sienna! I wonder if there is actual evidence of kids choosing not to bully due to celebrity cancellations. I've never been a fan of the idea of canceling someone due to their behavior as a child. It feels like something that should be dealt with between parents not in the court of public opinion. Someone at 10 years old is a totally different person compared to 24. I'm generally ok with adult bad behavior having some consequences since, well, you're an adult. You should know better. At the same time though, the punishment should fit the crime and people should be sure it actually happened before they start going off. I'll never understand going after FreeZia and her family for occasionally using fake goods. How will I go on if her bag isn't truly Chanel?! Ultimately, people should just try to pay more attention to their own lives.

I will have to disagree with cancelling celebrities who used to be bully deterring younger kids from becoming bullies. No matter where you go there will always be this one individual who mistreats you and bully you. Cancelling celebrities because they used to be bully is not going to make bullying rate in Korea to go down. The best thing to do in that situation is to forgive those who wronged you and move on. Only then all the pain and trauma lifts away from you. Trust me I used to live there and got bullied very severely. Also, to answer your question. I feel like a celebrity who did not deserve to get cancelled would be Soojin from (G) idle. The whole thing was basically just a witch hunt. Sisters who accused her had no proof and they were just allegations. When Seo Shin Ae actress claimed that she used to be bullied by her she carefully crafted her words to make Soojin look like a villain in public eye. Despite no proof to back up her claims people just started to turn against Soojin because Shin Ae was more famous than Soojin and had more influence. Not to mention there were a lot of unverified rumours that were going around social media at the time as well. Many people just rode this hate bandwagon and everything snowballed out of control. Her dream and career was cut short because of this. I want this injustice to be reversed. I want same people who tarnished her reputation and image restore it back. I want Soojin to be reinstated back to G-idle.

Sometimes what one perceives as bullying isn’t really what the other person intended. I hate it when everyone jumps on a bandwagon without hearing out two sides of a story and just wants to go with the narrative that makes them feel good, more sensational or morally high.

Cancel culture can get positive results if its used right, unfortunately lately this type of mass group activity results in ruining many people's lives. people are so petty and overly sensitive, worst off is that they go on hearsay without doing their own research on a topic before they begin boycotting someone.

What made the Irene scandal so bad was that people were WAITING for Irene to get into one cause people already projected their hate onto her for any reason they could imagine, so when that stylist came out with the allegations people jumped on JUST for the sake of bandwagon hate (which isn’t her first time accusing an idol of something and if it was an issue why not be professional & tell SM instead of running to the internet?). The stylist had done this to idols before allegedly* and have ruined many idols reputations due to her allegations. Irene included. People already hated Irene cause of pettiness & jealousy so when that happened they just took the scandal and ran. They didn’t stop to think about what the stylist saying not making sense they just ran to bully Irene cause they thought that was enough to do so.

If you're not in a group, you're a bad person, I find that dumb. I'm surprised Korea is not about actual evidence, and proof before discrimination. I find Asia to be way too judgemental, unforgiving, and mind set towards not actually gaining facts. Beleiving all rumors, or not hearing all sides of the story before judging is bad... As for Cancel Culture in America, I think Amber Heard is the biggest, and recent one... Iv'e been watching a lot of Korean & Japanese tv shows on Netflix lately, alway's saddens me when I see someone cancelled. And I noticed drug use can get a person cancelled in Asia, even to the point of being completely taken out of a movie, or video game project... I don't mean to point fingers only at Asia, some of America's biggest issue's are the insane amount of homeless & drug addicts, along with mentally unstable ppl firing off guns. Crime is big in America

TBH the case that really discusted me was Seo Soojin from G-IDLE Basically Soojin was my least favorite in the Group since all the Girls are Hyper talented But she is the Only one That is not up to My taste in Looks, yet everyone was always claiming She is the Best looking Maybe only beaten by Miyeon. On top of that her Sluggish rarely youthful behavior wasnt really interesting to me in a crackhead energy group like G-IDLE. Yet As for her talent she always amazed me. And she fully belongs there. Her Skills as a dancer ,actress are unmatched even by other members. As for Bully accusation, I don't even care if they are true or false. And I even propagate if she is found guilty in a Fair trial, she should be forced to pay reparations and treatment of any psychological damages the victim is suffering from. In the harshest way possible. As well as publically apologize as a influencer. However Her career is not a consequence of her Bullying others into submission but Hard work, talent and conforming to expectations in a very hardcore industry. Canceling Her life for something she did AS A CHILD. Where she CAN NOT BE HELD responsible by LAW of ANY SOVEREIGN country that has any reason and dignity. Idols already dedicate ANY chance of becoming ANYTHING else for that slight hope of becoming an artist. Since they waste all the time of their lives to practice 24/7. Its not a cancelation of a celebrity life, it's literally a death sentence. She needs to move to a different country to have a life. And that not even including the term Good in front of Life. And before some smartass comments ,remember How You the Underage kid did EVERYTHING right and never hurt others passively or actively. Then you may proceed to search for my Twitter. (which I don't have because I Have IQ exceeding binary numbers) Reading through comments and posts, I have discovered How Eager people are: 1. To grab the chance of Holding power to decide the fate of someone who actually achieved something more than them. Taking it out on others for the fact they have No control over their own life and the Things Chebol and government do to them. We can't have shit, so we will take away their shit too... We have a saying in My country: Hope neighbor's cow dies. (you don't have anything from it, but at least the neighbor lost something) 2. Leaping at the chance to destroy a Group that doesn't conform to their standard /and or competes and regularly defeats their own favorite group. This is the Time G-IDLE is at its absolute Peak, wiping the floor with every Award show Korea can Host. Not to mention, It is Supported Harder by Foreign Fans than Korean ones. 3. Clinging to anything to achieve xenophobic satisfaction about something that makes them uncomfortable. Because how dare them be different. And successful at the same time. I spent my Life conforming to standards and still have Nothing... That was the moment I really wanted to Hurl by observing a culture, or better said lack there of. In the case of Bully like AOA where 2 Legal ADULTS are stepping out of bound 100% yeah. They are Legally obligated to respect each others' integrity, so yeah. 19+ in Korea means the LAW recognizes them as Old enough to Maturely make decisions and bear consequences of those decisions. 13 year old Nah m8 GTFO. That should have been stopped Right there and then. You have NO right to cancel someone's Hard earned life Just because Your Group cant win an award, and there's people that Love what you don't deem favorable. I see Now G-IDLE lost some massive weight and conform to K looks way more, but I also see Foreign fans of them Less interested than ever. It's like Parents when the Kid says :I'm going to war, and you can stop me. You still love them for what they are your kids, you will still wait for them, worry and tend to them after they suffer... But there's that hidden creeping feeling of you knowing they will take a gun an shoot people dead for stupid Propaganda... Although I agree with you Sienna that Showing consequences is a positive thing, this is 90% damaging and 10% positive. Nothing good can be taught to kids from it. But Vengeful Mob justice. Decision to enact a Beheading needs to be Justified and backed up by Positive outcome. This is just Interpretation, its the Neo-feminist way : Please all look at this ONE point we wanna show you and FORGET all the other things that are happening because of it. Just focus on the Good thing, please. You are not allowed to see the bad stuff. That doesnt work Human brain will passively imprint and reproduce such behavior in its entirety. Unless you reason with it...

Overall great video. I agree with Cancel Culture being toxic. People should stop behaving as if they were PERFECT human beings, and obviously stop expecting that from other people, no matter the class or social status. In reality, my personal opinion is that a lot of people just jump so quick on the cancel wagon because of that thrilling moment of seeing somebody successful fall. However, humans are not born perfect and will never be. We make mistakes, and then we decide to learn or not from them. IMO that is what makes the difference. Was it an isolated incident? Was it repeated? How much time ago did it take place? Was it a criminal offense? Was there a proper trial? What was the result? People should stop to ask themselves these questions (As you very well mentioned). Of course the psychological layers behind this phenomenon are countless, but I don't want to write the Bible here LMAO I just disagree with your statement about cancel culture in the west not existing. Also, in my humble opinion Brad Pitt is a bad example here because he has literally been one of the hottest men on earth (and his beauty was very "standard" or for "all publics"), so he got the "Handsome pass" a lot (sad but true), also there is the fact that his roles have always been kinda like variations of the bad playboy (so people weren't as shocked as if his roles were the kind guy, people tend to mix reality and fiction). There have been precedents of this even with people that aren't celebrities. For example, a USA Serial Killer (Ted Bundy) who killed 30 women but a lot of women were thirsting for him because he was attractive, to the point of just going to the trial to thirst for him. A lot of people like Johnny Depp got cancelled and were even removed from movies (and others got away with very shady stuff aswell, not trying to switch the discourse here). My point here is that cancel culture is not necessarily inexistent here, but rather different. I feel like people just cancel what's "Cancellable" here, as opposed to Koreans that just don't care. Also, Mainstream Media plays a lot of part in this. They cover only the cases that are beneficial to their agendas. Anyways, Keep up the good work!

It's pretty much the same situation in the States these days also. Since the "#Me too" movement, all a woman has to do is accuse an actor or celebrity of something & the poor guy has his show cancelled before he's even had a trial or had a chance to defend himself.
