The TOP 10 Sailboats for Sale in Maryland For Under $35k! @RiggingDoctor Joins Us to find the BEST! Herby and Maddie from @RiggingDoctor joined me for this episode to shed some light on the Maryland used sailboat market and, man, did I learn a lot. And it was so much fun! Did you know that sailing a centerboard sailboat with the board up is like trying to run with your pants down? Fact. And Herby will explain why. The Maryland market is full of great used sailboats so we decided to find the best of the best for less than $35,000. And remember, $35,000 is just the top end of the asking price - so don't think for a second you'd pay full price for any of these!
So, buckle up and enjoy the show. @boatfools is very grateful for Maddie and Herby's generosity with their time and effort on this show. It was a blast!
We've listed the boats mentioned in the show below. We have no financial interest in any of them.
Thanks for watching and don't forget to subscribe, like, and share!

Had a Hans Christian 48T for 32 years. Sailed over 100,000 miles and spent over 15 years in the Caribbean and never had a leak with the butterfly hatches.

Centerboards are not ballast and if you lost the board, the vessel would not be in any trouble. Secondly, if the board was stuck down, (unlikely) but since it swings back, you could still get to your dock.

And she was built in Taiwan, but by a German builder to very high standards. 3 Cat 5 hurricanes and no, zero, structural damages. Many American built boats are poorly built. it's the builder not the geography

The Halman 27 pocket cruiser surely has a better capsize rating than printed - with her deeper keel, moderate displacement of 257, plus being a double ender, when tossed upside down they tend to roll back up much faster than the wide, flat sterns on modern boats. Someone needs to rerun the capsize number. The Pacific Seacraft 37 would be an absolute steal, but we were on the hard right next to it for over a year and watched a lot of people being shown the boat - and no one bought it, so I think there must be a lot more wrong than just revarnishing - reflected in the price which is now much lower than listed through the broker.

Not sure what your plans are, but the Sea Sprite is the best deal here. Depends on condition of all systems of course, but there's no free lunch. BTW, I'm a biased Bristol 29.9 owner, but it's a better boat than the B30 in many ways. Best of luck to you.

The Halman capsize ratio is barely over 2. And most of the light displacement boats like Beneteau’s and JEANNEAU’s have capsize ratings approaching 3. And guess what people have crossed the Atlantic in them. Remember that ratio is based on reported not actual displacement

I was looking at a freedom 35 listed in Florida a week ago and it looks like they took out the zipped up headliner and replaced it with a hard material. A Headliner would be a nice insulation up north, but I think down south it’s just a place for Mold to grow. Either way that boat was gone the next day. 😢 I have a seaward fox 17 with a carbon fiber mast, the mast itself is incredibly light.

@@boatfools thanks. My only concern is everything thing I see about sailing is that it is a team recreation. I am an introvert, and sailing seems like a lot of work for a soloist. It takes the peace out of it.

I would actually disagree. Some of my favorite sailing moments are the ones when I am soloing - and that’s on a 38-foot boat. Start small and enjoy the peace and tranquility of solo sailing. It’s the best, truly.

@@boatfools good morning 😁 like I mentioned previously, I am thinking of talking sailing lessons, and maybe I can get a little 18-24 footer. I have a 15 year old , and was hoping we could make that our thing, but, all he is interested in, is playing video games. He knows his dad can’t swim.😂 who will save me from drowning 😂 I made sure he learned don’t let your fears stop you from doing what you want to do. I’ve taken him kayaking a few times in the past. I had a couple of semi-bad experiences when I was in the military regarding the waters, that caused me to have nightmares for years, but, they make sailing and boating look like so much fun, that I want to try it. Of course when I see the sailboats sailing on the side doesn’t ease my mind, thinking the boat will flip over.

Ha! I’ve got several teens so I know exactly what you’re up against. Those sailing lessons you mentioned will make all of the difference in the world with respect to your confidence and fears. And your enthusiasm will eventually be contagious and teaching your 15 yr old what you’ve learned will be a tremendous joy. Maybe your teen could do the lessons with you?

In the Chesapeake, wooden boats are prized and well cared for. As a result, it’s hard to find them for a cheap price. If you want to see some gorgeous wooden boats, look no further than Oxford, MD. I’ve seen some beautiful restorations come out of there and sailing by there feels like sailing through history.

@@boatfools Thanks mate! I just want to know if that crealock is ocean crossing ready, I'm from South Africa and the boat industry is not as prominent here as it is in the states or Europe, the boats that are available here are too expensive and nowhere near ready for even coastal cruising let alone an ocean passage. The newer boats that you'll find lean closer to the 6 figure price tag on average. I'll have to send someone to deliver the boat for me should I decide to buy it.

@@historystuff.2835we had a friend go take a look and, apparently, the Crealock is not as great as she looks - issues with the fuel system and more cosmetic work than the pictures lead us to believe, unfortunately. This explains the rock bottom price. The Baba might be a good Plan B - though maybe too small for your purposes.
