Bro, the Battle of Yiling in Dynasty Warriors 6 is the most brutal of all. It was so hard to play even on EASY. I remember feeling desperate seeing all my comrades dying and not being able to do anything while the Shu camp was on fire. It was totally intense, haha.

That DW6's Yi Ling battle is so f hard man🔥as Wu we gain some momentum after the fire attack, then Shu officers start to reborn one after another😂as Shu we're on a roll for like 5 minutes at the start then bum, fire attack, our officers are burned and died constantly with little to no resistance😂well, at least the theme song of that battle is amazing, I can listen to it all day long, the song goes really hard and the battle is extremely intense👍

Battle of Hu Lao Gate (Coalition side)? Where Superman Mode Lu Bu chase you like crazy. It always scares me, especially in early game, since Lu Bu can one shot me. Battle of Fan Castle (Shu side)? Where you're back-stabed by your own ally and morale keep going down.

Fan is a good HM! Hu Lao is def tough vs Lu Bu BUT most games the map is so big you can just run past him and kill Dong, making it much easier than the others

@@qq5847 I thought it was called the Elder sword but close enough but i dont recall the staff style is good with keeping foes in the air when busting out the Musou combo sure I have fondness for the staff just wish it didn't replace Zhou Yu's impressive sword style

There was tong gate in DW6 which was the first level for Ma Chao's story mode. It's been many years so I don't remember details but I do remember having a very hard time. Especially since it was the first level which would've meant I started at level 1. Also will never forget Nanman Campaign in DW4. Lol

​@@imanlxix8314I've been there before. It wasn't easy having to start off with Ma Chao and as a low level character no less. If you're lucky, you can kill Han Sui and prevent the other allied officers from defending but even then it's hard to pull off.

If we count DLC battles, then Yang Ping Gate from DW8 is the most challenging to me. Unlike in DW5XL, your allies will get obliterated on all sides and you’ll have to babysit Cao Cao from hordes of Shu reinforcements.

That's the stage they used for the demo for dw3 back in the day. My first experience with the series. You could play as Zhao Yun of Shu, Huang Gai of Wu and Zhen ji of Wei.

I just recently got back into the older titles and my god, I completely agree with the top spot. Especially in DW4, whenever Meng Huo reappears, so do the gate captains at the top where the main camp is - and if you're not careful, the commander eventually gets swarmed (unless you're playing as SAID commander). Thank god the Wu one was easier because I was SSX and she happened to be Commander. The Shu one? Ugh, nightmares.

And the worst part is that you have like 4 generals and if you get away from them for like 10 seconds they just die. You have to stay close to them at all times.

Wuzhang-Wei in DW5 was hectic. It expected you to be everywhere at once if you wanted to keep your morale high enough, and keeping officers from breaching the gate while you're doing the objectives was very difficult. I actually really like the high pressure and time sensitive events though. Not to mention if you're playing as Cao Cao or Xu Zhu and Zuo Ci spawns to make it even harder. I remember playing on Hard with no stat buffs and their campaigns may have been the hardest just because of Wuzhang Plains, despite the fact that they had plenty of time to grow and get better weapons and stats.

Definitely agree with the top 1. I remember back in the day when i attempted Yue Ying lv10 weapon in DW4, i lost so many time i almost broke my ps2 controller. I yelled so hard whenever an officer die, and one time i raged quited the game for a month because of not killing Meng Huo fast enough before Zhuge Liang got gangbanged to death, leading to a loss at the very last second. I was only able to beat it (along with getting the weapon) by using the interim save tatic. Instead of satisfaction after achieving victory, i was just relieved that i would never have to play that stage ever again😂

Battle of yiling shu morale is just like supersonic jet speed. Its fast and deadly especially i play it on DW6. I remember when play it , i must retry the stage several tries because lots of death and unprotected Liu Bei

Technically, you don't HAVE to beat Lu Bu to beat Xiapi in DW4. If you defeat every officer except Lu Bu, Diaochan, and Chen Gong, then approach Chen Gong, Chen Gong will surrender in a cutscene, then Diaochan will convince Lu Bu to retreat.

DW4 was ahead of its time, while it had the kingdom musou mode we'd see in more recent years, skipping optional stages, doing stage in specific orders and accomplishing specific tasks could unlock secret stages. I'm pretty sure there was a secret 'Lu Bu's Revenge' stage in Wei or Shu if he escaped, but it's been years, so don't quote me on that.

@@NachtKaiser666 There is! It's a wei tale called "Lu Bu's Offensive" where you trap Lu Bu inside of the castle and try to burn him. But, he survives so he tries to end it with one final duel.

@@DragonZeta2 Yeap, recently i finished DW4 with all Tales stages and confirm that. After burning him he will challenge you into duel and will be easy defeated. It's the only case when main stage commander will offer duel.

Shoutout to Shu Changban where you have to protect the peasants from dying. There was a version where it was very easy for them to die, cant remember which one but it drove me insane on harder difficultys

That was Chang Ban in DW6, tbh, that battle is hard for both sides👍as Shu our officers are so weak and you have to protect vulnerable peasants all the time😂as Wei not only we have to get pass GOD MODE Zhang Fei and Zhao Yun, but we also have to be quick because Liu Bei runs so f fast man😂

at Hu Lao Gate you can avoid him (the strongest version of Lu Bu) and quickly kill Dong Zhuo to end the battle👍at Xia Pi you have to face him but he's apparently weaker👍

No doubt! I was amazed how the series managed to make me change to a new favorite character for each of those 4 games. Gang Ning in 3. Zhou Tai in 4. Guan Ping in 5. And Ling Tong in 6. DW4 had the best weapon drop / loot system of the series, IMO. It kept me playing longer than any of the other games.

Some honorable mentions I would give would be Jieting. That dang Ma Su would die so easily once he’s ambushed in later installments in harder difficulties when he’s the commander 😭 and killing Sima Yi was no joke in DW3 especially when he’s so close to death then just health regens back to full with all the damn archers. 😭 DW6 Changban was also a pain in the backside cuz of how easy it was for Liu Bei to escape, that man would stop for NOTHING.

As someone who played pretty much all the older games my very first thoughts were Yiling (archers!) and the Nanman Campaign. I still have memories of getting Zhao Yun's 5th weapon in DW3XL, literally just me and Zhuge Liang back to back with no other troops left on the map fighting for like an hour until I could finally move forward lol.

My fav battle all times is Yi ling because lu xun did a significant job he is my fav and ofc wu showed shu who is boss 😂 yea it’s tough espically to set fire attack But I do remmber badai castle in DW5 was tough !!! I remmber I struggeled to get lu xun’s weapon But hey your videos are awesome !! We want more videos

@@ShadowOfCicero hell yeah I remember that one 😂 Guan Du becomes very easy on Free Mode when we max out our characters, but it's hard as f at the beginning, especially for Story Mode, Yuan Shao's force crushing through everything👍 at least Guan Yu & Zhang Liao have great moveset to actually hold on a little bit whereas Xiahou Dun's weapon style is abysmal 😂

DW3XL Hefei Castle on Very Hard for Lu Meng's fifth weapon. I still have PTSD of this nightmare twenty years later! Trying to get the weapon while babysitting Sun Quan, eradicating every single crossbowmen in the center area before they can take you from full to dead in a couple of shots... Even with 2 players, it was hell! I'll also give a mention to Xiahou Dun's Xtreme stage in DW4XL, a stage full of archers where you can't equip any items? Yeah, good luck getting his level 11 weapon! 😭 I know some people don't like how easy the games got in later instalments, but I personally welcome it. I've payed my dues getting all those secret weapons in earlier instalments 😅

Yeah...I was looking for comments mentioning the max weapon unlocks of DW3XL. But I'm very surprised to read that you welcomed the lower difficulties of later entries in the series. Did you never miss how amazingly rewarding it felt to get a 5th level weapon? I especially welcomed that the game sometimes required well coordinated cooperative play for unlocks. Too few coop games do that. Sadly, I never had friends who also played DW, though. xD Got just about lucky enough to convince a friend on one day to help with a couple of my most desired unlocks. Gave him a maxed out Lu Bu to play as. That did the trick.

@Kijinn honestly, it didn't do it to me. It felt like an assault on my fragile sanity, haha. Then again, I ended up doing those weapons twice, once with my brother on our game and once with my girlfriend of the time, so I may have PTSD from Lu Meng's weapon to the point where anything else feels better. At the same time, I'll agree that DW7 just handing them to you if you can clear a node was too easy. There's a balance between difficulty and the rewarding feeling, and to me, DW3XL leaned far too much on the difficulty side. Maybe it's because I'm closing in 40 years old, and I don't have as much time to play games as I used to or would like to, but I feel more recent games know they now have over 100 characters and they have to balance it in a way that respect everyone's time to not feel too bloated.

The only type of Dynasty Warriors game that I have played is Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate and I know several of the levels in that game were really tough because of Lu Bu

I love the DW5 Chang'An map on Shu's side, I get to bait and throw enemies into the pendulum protecting the western gate for damage and fun. I like weird traps and gimmicks. But I was missing one stage that even with 2 players (spilt screen) was ruthless as your forces get overrun so easily on harder difficulties that soon only your leader in the south-eastern camp is alive and needs help from an ocean of enemies - The battle of Mt. Xingshi in DW7 had me and my 2P running on horseback to save our leader for a good 10-15 minutes to clear every enemy. Leaving even one enemy alive to go heal meant defeat so we had to take turns in healing and taking the agro of an ocean of enemies. I also remember not being able to lure away enemy officers because their agro was glued onto our leader, meaning one of us had to herd the wave while the other worked on the smaller enemies like archers to protect the player on horseback... TLDR: DW7 - Battle of Mt. Xingshi is way harder than it should be for being such a minor battle in history.

DW4 nanman campaign was a nightmare and also my favorite stage since I knew exactly how to counter the morale drop. You just need to find meng huo next location after you defeated him immediately. Don't even bother any strong hold since they gonna regenerate when ever meng huo re-apeare.

Top 10: weapons or items that made you want to give up on your 100% run

dynasty warriors 4 nanman campaign was mine... I know the pain, you either play the commander or you lose. Unless you have a super maxed out character and even then its still tough. constant morale drop, the poison swamp, the infinite respawning gate captains and enemy renforcements... don't forget the elephants either.

Man doesn't know the pain of playing Battle of Changban as the Shu side in Dynasty Warriors 2 on the hardest difficulty.

DW 7 was my introduction to the series, managed to get the complete trilogy, followed by DW 8 and its expansions, been a diehard fan of the Warriors franchise ever since and got most of the spinoffs

Gotta agree with the nanman campaign, especially on DW4 you have SO much juggling to do. Killing officers in certain orders to make Nanman troops and officers defect Only to have them completely overrun anyway if when they push to the central map, main camp will 100% be overrun if you do not clear barricades and hand hold them to the centre once most of map is clear. Meng huo and Zhu Rong can legit juggle you for days and kill you. elephants, poison, armoured troops, respawning gate captains. All of this said. 100% my favourite battle and the one I replayed the most the satisfaction of completing this on hardest difficulty when NOT using the commander is awesome. any officer with weak crowd clearing really badly struggles to cope on this map (I'm looking at you zhuge liang...) I fucking LOVE this game, I'm using off my PlayStation and going again!

I remember the time when the game is harder in older dw as the normal soldiers using combos on you, arrows flying in and stopping your combos. There is no way you can push alone in older versions.

Curse Baidi Castle, I played DW5 heaps as a kid, I was going around getting everyones best weapon, but baidi was bloody brutal because Lui Shan rushes out of the castle so you have to rescue him. Not only that DW5 allowed some officers to use musou rage making them hit harder, faster and use there true musou attack.

Shiting/You Ting is Lu Xun's level in DW5 Xtreme Legends, my favourite of the game. That's where I got Lu Xun's 4th weapon since I couldn't get it at Baidi castle.

To me, the medal goes to Yi Ling. Everything can go south very fast, especially in DW3 and 6. I would say DW3 Shu side is the hardest iteration because of: (1).The fire attack, easy enough to take out the fire unit but draws you away from your paper allies. (2). Officers have that hyper armor like at Tong Gate, looking at you Lu Meng... and (3). the Wu main camp is nothing but a minigun of archers. And they keep coming out the nearby gates. I mean, Shu was supposed to lose, but it felt fatalistic.

Hefei Castle on both sides is my kryptonite, or more specifically the third game. As Wu you have to storm the castle but as Wei you have to push back with all your allies boxed into 4 rooms surrounding your main base. It was always hell with enemies on all sides and allies as weak as butter because you aren't with them.

Yi Ling in DW3 on the Shu side was the most epic battle for me, the later stages of the earlier series got extremely difficult in tense. Other stages include Battle of He Fei Castle, those archers were an absolute nightmare. I miss the challenges of the earlier titles, it made it more tense and it felt like you were on the battlefield yourself, heart in mouth stuff and you’re on the edge of your seat. The later games have been toned down to the extreme in terms of difficulty, your characters are super OP like demi-gods and you can achieve 1000 kills in less than 5 minutes on any difficulty, WO4 for example every character has massive crowd clearing moves and although it’s fun, the lack of that tense feeling you had back in DW2-5 is gone. I guess it’s probably because Koei (Omega Force) might want to cater to a more mainstream audience by making it easy fun to kill your time. The older difficulty of games such as Ninja Gaiden is completely gone. Koei needs to make a difficulty level similar to the older titles, Wo Long and Nioh were a good challenge.

DW5 WuZhang was way harder in vanilla DW5 since mobs' flinch time was half of DW5XL time. Not to mention the worst was with Wei Side. At Wei Side, instead of 3 supply bases, you got 3 defense bases which was ASS since Supply Base can heal and buff you every 30 seconds. Also, I nominated Struggle for Book in DW5XL. 3 constant Musou Rage Lu Bu charging at you and YOU HAVE TO DEFEAT THE CORRESPOND LU BU THAT WAS ASSIGNED TO YOUR COMMANDER? However, the other Lu Bu ignore their assigned opponent and charging toward you. Also, that stage was FULL OF TRAPS. Phantom Soldier, Tornado, Rockfall, poison river or even stone soldier.

I remember the nanman campaign from dw4, my custom officer just never quite strong enough, really difficult stage, meng huo is no joke and he just keeps respawning, which is so frustrating to deal with. Edit: just noticed its your #1, so atleast im nlt the only one who struggled with this, probably more than any other stage

I have my own personal takes on difficult battles in my own DYNASTY WARRIORS experience. Not that I disagree with any of these on the list, but I'd like to share my own preference. DYNASTY WARRIORS 4 had at least 5 difficult battles for me, even at Max Officer Rank and high level weapon. And yes, I did use practically everyone in that game - INCLUDING the fat pig Dong Zhuo. #1 being Battle of Hulao Gate - that was my first instance of "Oh shit, I'm dead." when I saw Lu Bu. I knew I was COOKED if I tried to fight him, so I ignored him to the best of my ability and proceeded the battle as normal. Big mistake on my part was killing Diaochan, and he STEAMLINED toward me. Word to the wise - you want to win that battle, keep that woman alive or he will CURBSTOMP your ass. #2 was Battle of Tong Gate - I would usually play the Wei side of this using either Dian Wei or Xiahou Dun, but DAMN did this level kill me so many times. Either I get pelted by arrows from archer towers, Ma Chao just folds me or I'm struggling with a normal Sub-Officer WITH A HIGH LEVEL CHARACTER. I hate this one a little bit, but not NEARLY as much as the others. #3 is NOTORIOUSLY the Nanman Campaign - both Shu and Wu sides. I was SWEATING BUCKETS playing defense while trying to go on offense as much as I can, be it with Zhang Fei or Zhou Tai depending on which story I was doing - WORST LEVEL TO STRUGGLE MY ASS OFF ON *_PERIOD._* #4 is a close tie between the Wuzhang Plains or Yiling, both of which being difficult on either side. On the Shu side, in Wuzhang Plains, you have to keep a steady pace of defense while also being perceptive of what's going on inside your camp. With the render distance being choppy, there's NO room for error. On the Wu side, in Yiling, you'll have to keep your guys safe to execute both the Stone Sentinel Maze trap and the fire attack. Doing one but failing the other makes the fight VERY tedious - again, no room for error. And finally, my personal #5 - Lu Bu's Revolt. The time-limit to get his max level weapon is ABSURD, and there's SO many enemies you gotta kill just to clear the level out. I get at least 1,000 kills each time just due to the sheer amount of enemies. In addition, without Red Hare, it's almost impossible to get it unless you have the Wind Scroll or some other item that increases speed and range. DYNASTY WARRIORS 8 XLCE has 5 fights that are particularly challenging to deal with if you're not fully prepared. Some of these being a real kick in the ass depending on what side you're on, and the others just completely unfair. #1 in DW8 XLCE is the famous battle of Hulao Gate (THIS one is even more dangerous), because depending on the faction you chose, Wei or Shu, you'll have separate objectives. On the Wei side, Yue Jin and Xiahou Dun are tasked to clear Sishui Gate while Li Dian and Cao Cao speaks with Yuan Shu. No difficulty there - pretty straight-forward. If you're on Shu's side, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei are clearing out Sishui while Zhao Yun speaks to Yuan Shu. Again, no difficulty. It just depends on who side with. The more difficult part is breaching Hulao. Li Dian and Xiahou Dun are tasked with taking out the enemies in the field while Yue Jin helps Cao Cao take the catapult. Since the new combat system took precident after DW6, Lu Bu is an even MORE dangerous MF in this game. If you knock him up in the air, PRAY he doesn't use his Second Musou. That attack has a VERY WIDE AoE, it IGNORES blocking and it can one-shot you VERY EARLY in the game. And just like DW4, DO NOT kill Diaochan. You're just ASKING for it at that point. #2 is the most infamous battle of Shu - the Battle of Fan Castle. Guan Yu and his children Ping, Suo, Xing and Yinping have to defend Fan Castle from an insurrection from Wu and the plans from Wei. To make matters worse, you're FORCED to retreat due to numerous casualties and you can't keep all the children alive - Guan Ping and Guan Yu die on the fields of Jing Province. The reason this battle is such a prick is because there's too many things going on at once and you have to constantly clear the way for your escape. You can kill the enemies all you want, but you have no choice but to flee. It's arguably one of the more difficult fights on Shu's Story, second being Yiling. #3 is a more famous stage on the Wu side - Battle of Hefei. Ling Tong, Gan Ning, Zhou Tai, Lu Meng and Sun Quan repel the massive assault led by Wei and have to retreat due to their plans being too impenetrable. Alternatively, if you played the Hypothetical Route, you can break their defenses thanks to the cunning minds of Lu Su and Zhou Yu. Even Sun Jian and Sun Ce come to help later as it can either be a complete disaster or a total failure. The problem is you have to maintain defense and try to anticipate where attacks will be. Without the two I mentioned, it can be VERY frustrating. #4 is a more infamous battle on the Wei chapter - the Battle of Tong Gate (more difficult in DW8). In order for the battle to be more in your favor, you have to let Han Sui and Cao Cao speak in peace while luring Pang De directly to you by killing enemies at two checkpoints. If you succeed, most of the officers under Han Sui will make your approach to Ma Chao easier - but if it were to fail, you've got a LOT of fighting to do. In addition, your choice of Officers are Xiahou Yuan, Jia Xu and Wang Yi - three characters who have fast attacks but dog range, making the defection of Han Sui and his followers NEARLY impossible. And for my personal #5, I have two difficult choices - the Battle of Chengdu or the Recapture of Chang'an. For the first pick, during the Jin final chapter, you can either play as Sima Zhao, Wang Yuanji and Zhong Hui. You're up against the ENTIRE late Shu generation and there is NO ROOM for error. You have to crumble their defenses and ensure NO one stays alive from Shu, which can be VERY difficult. You have the Nanman with their reviving soldiers, Yueying with her Juggernauts and a LEGION of soldiers coming after you. The reason this battle sucks is if you're a fan of Shu, it almost feels like a full-on massacre as you kill everyone belonging to it. It definitely makes the list as one of the more difficult stages in DW8 history. Meanwhile, the Recapture of Chang'an is LUDICROUSLY difficult! Lu Bu, Zhang Liao, Diaochan and Chen Gong prepare for a full siege of where Lu Bu was exiled from, and it's a CAVALCADE of battles. Pincer attacks, ballistae, ambush attacks and a LOT of navigation. The main goal is to protect the ram where Chen Gong serves as its escort. During that time, MANY officers will try to intercept you and stall time for the ram to be destroyed. If you can clean up with Lu Bu, it becomes a JOKE, but at first attempt it is DEFINITELY a lot. Trust me when I say you will have NO troubke being pinned into a corner - you have quite literally EVERYTHING THROWN AT YOU AT ONCE.

Honestly this was a pretty good list I think i only have one difference I would make for my own, and that is I would put battle of Heifei castle in my top 3 that stage is literal nightmare fule to me but im glad we both agree it's in the top 4.

Don't know about other DW games, but in DW 4:Hyper mission called "The Nanman Campaign" is absolute nightmare. You get constant morale drop cause of climate, freaking elephants, pools with poison water, hundreds of troops and respawning Meng Huo. It's one of few rare missions in game, where you can get around 1000 KO.

Replaying DW5 now, maybe ~20 years later. It didnt feel so bad to me too, at least on Musou Normal. But I also remembered DW4 been much tougher than ... right now. Maybe I would write a separate comment. 🤔

Any stage with Lu Bu is going to be difficult by itself. Add Diaochan to the mix and it can get ugly REALLY quickly…ESPECIALLY if you defeat her while Lu Bu is alive. He LITERALLY goes into Rage Mode and beelines to your location to kill you. Had some tough battles with those two in the past. As far as my most hated mission, it always goes back to the Wuzhang Plains. No matter which side you were on (Shu or Wei), it was a VERY difficult battle all around. The Nanman Campaign wasn’t as bad for me. Whether it was with Shu or Wu, it was an easy (yet frustrating) battle. Chibi gave me headaches…ESPECIALLY on the Allied (Shu & Wu) side. That’s the stage that gave me nightmares along with Wuzhang. Great list!!

Honestly i predicted yiling, wu zhang and nanman to be the top 3 and i was right 😂. I think Yiling is the most difficult because your officers drop here and there, Wu Zhang is the most gruelling because there's so much going on and Nanman is the most annoying.

Nanman from dw3 and He Fei , wei side from dw4 was so fking hard. Nanman you already explained but I vividly remember Wei's army in He Fei being fking obliterated, and the map being so big, and reinforcements from Wu keep coming with high morale. I was like man, I can't be everywhere stop. lol

Ah ... anticipated most of the battles. As commented, was replaying DW5 nowadays, some ~20 years later. Did remember that DW4/3 were harder, perhaps way harder ... I mean, I was/am clearing Musou mode on Normal (DW5) nowadays, and while the Wuzhang-s and Yiling-s are not easy, I cannot describe them as "tough". More like "tedious". Perhaps practice makes perfect (since by the 10th time, I knew which triggers to look out for)? I mean, I just finished Pang Tong's Musou mode, and Yiling was in fact easy, because I knew that i need to run to Zhu Ran and finish him off to stop the fire attack ... Maybe you mean playing all these battles on Hard?

Fun Fact about the battle of Yiling specially in DW3 on the Shu side i remember if you get Ma Chao as one of the Generals in the middle he will legit never die and will actually stay their fighting off the Wu generals. I swear i remember this being a thing when i was a kid playing. Can anyone confirm this?

for me Yiling DW3 would be the number one... and it is also my most played battle by far in all titles...2nd wuzhang plaines... i loved those two for their difficulty... yiling i would let all shu officers die and play the 1vs the whole enemy army fantasy out... gan ning nearly oneshotting you with his ult... so fucking scary... i also played so many times to try to save all shu officers... it maybe worked 1 out of hundred battles... DW3 man... the good old times

Also battle of Fan castle in 4 or pacifically, trying to do it without playing as Guan Yu is impossible he dies constantly. Also in 4 battle of Jian Ye Wei/ Shu side, ooo dealing with Sun Jian and his kids constantly responding while you and Liu Bei or Cao Cao , are the only two left is chore in of its self. Add that to the fact that Huang Zhongs 10th weapon is on that stage and you have to defeat all three kids before defeating the real Sun Jian, is a massive headache.

It's been so long since i've played any warriors (Dynasty, Samurai or orochi) games. But i remember trying over 10 times the Battle of Bai Di Castle as Xing Cai in DW5. Liu Bei died mid-battle (cmiiw), Liu Shan is an imbecile, you practically have nobody significant outside of zhao yun and ma chao, Wu's reinforcements is Gan ning, and worst of all, YOU'RE PLAYING AS XING CAI. I think it took me playing split screen with my brother to complete this mission

Yi Ling Dynasty warriors 3 with Shu is the most rage inducing, frustrating, pain in the butt levels ever. Every officer being in hyper mode and hitting like tanks was so irritating. And every Shu officer having it doesn't help.

Yeah, Wu Zhang is my pick for hardest battle of them all. With Yi Ling being my second choice. While I agree that the Nanman battles are hard, I was too distracted by all the shirtless men to notice... In other words, yes they're hard, but they were also my favorites.

Hulao Gate in 6-8. In 8, enemies can do the switch weapon animation. And their mosou can freeze you for a second unless you could counter it with your own, or if you were blocking beforehand. You were just f-ed if Lu Bu does the phantom halberd switch or his mosous on you.

For sure! Hu Lao is definitely not one to be underestimated but it is a little easier especially since most games is built to go around Lu Bu and straight to Dong whos easy to beat

But...clearly...the hardest battles were the (individual per character) max (5th) level weapon unlocks of DW3 Xtreme Legends. The game featured fairly complex battle events that it constantly kept track off. Every event would influence the tide of battle in some way, but even if one event wouldn't trigger, that then potentially led to other ones. That gave the game a surprising amount of replayability. Most of those event combinations had to be discovered by the player. There was no hand-holding or manual for their completion. For the max lvl unlocks, on the highest difficulty setting, you had to successfully solve specific (but often secret) mid-battle tasks, that then triggered specific events. Those tasks usually involved very hard timers, giving you only mere minutes (like 1-4), often requiring that specific officers survived up to that point, or that your army achieved specific goals. Without the internet, the player wouldn't know any of the requirements for unlocking a weapon. You wouldn't know which map (of the 20 available) a character had to play on or what battle states had to be achieved. For some of those tasks you basically had to be in more than one place at the same time. I remember needing the help of a friend in some cases. Coop play was supported for unlocks. In order to get all 5th lvl weapons, you had to solve 41 of those sometimes extremely hard battle states and then also finish the mission successfully. The latter was already hard enough by itself. Those were the most intense but also most rewarding battles in all of the DW series.

Dw6 yi ling is definitely tough. For WU, you start the battle with low morale and zhang fei is in inspired mode. Once you beat him and cause the fire attack you gotta rescue the officers who haven't died and solve the maze immediately otherwise shu officers will keep coming back and slay your allies. SHU is just as bad. Once wu fire attack happens you gotta save liu bei and defeat gan ning and his reinforcements. It just goes from bad to worse because Once more reinforcements apper your morale lowers quickly then your allies start dropping like flies. Seriously I beat the stage with only 6 officers left. On top of all the you gotta make sure the maze dosen't fall to lu xun or any other random wu officer. Between the two, I think Shu is worse.

Dw4xl sun jians lvl 11 weapon stage. System limitations meant certain enemies have loading priority. And it just happens the lowest rank peons are highest priority. Which means the objective of beating gate captains were made artificially harder. They disappeared from screen until you are open to combo then appear to hit you and disappaear again. Poor game design but i remember fanboys on gamefaqs defended it and called it a skill issue.

YOOOO idk if I ever have, I know ive gotten close, maybe i have and dont remember, but yeah I can see that, 90 min of pain just be told "thats enough" all that work for NOTHIGN! thats painful lol

Can you do a "Worst to best" Hu Lao gate please? Or any other iconic stage like Chi Bi

These are my hardest battles: 10.) Xia Pi (Lu Bu, in general) 9.) Chang Ban (DW6 for Shu on keeping the people alive) 8.) Cheng Du (DW6 for Shu, all the enemy ambushes and reinforcements) 7.) He Fei (DW6 with Sun Jian vs Cao Cao) 6.) Fan Castle (DW6 with Wei-Wu vs Shu, and Wu vs Shu-Wei) 5.) Yi Ling (Again, DW6 in general) 4.) He Fei Castle (DW6... go figure) 3.) Bai Di Castle (DW8 with Wei on Chaos Mode) 2.) Xu Chang (DW6 with Sima Yi and Lu Bu's armies) 1.) Hu Lao Gate (DW6 = Lu Bu Kills Everyone!!!)

solid list!

No wonder I was struggling , last week I booted up dynasty warriors 3 as my first warriors game and chose Zhao Yun...I still havent 't gotten past Yi Ling. It's infuriating because your troops are terrible while the enemy spreads across the map easily and by the time you are done defeating the officers on the west side and take control of the gate there , in the middle and east section it will be swarmed with enemies and generals. And you have to take 2 or even 3v1 battles against enemy generals and their armies. No matter what you do at the start you will end up taking on Wu alone like an action film This video comfirms my assumption this stage is impossibly hard taking the #3 spot
