The Tonight Show 1992

Музыка

The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, with special guest Dolly Parton, this aired April 8, 1992. Parton was promoting her movie Straight Talk at the time. However she stated that she was glad they mentioned it. The real reason she stopped by was because she wanted to spend some time with him before he ended his long run on The Tonight Show. This was her last appearance with Johnny Carson as host of The Tonight Show. This is such a great interview, Dolly Parton looks fabulous and sounds fabulous, and Johnny is as always a classy host with the ability to be funny without insult. Enjoy!!

This song has gotten me through some pretty rough times in my life. I remember the original that came out in 1977. Growing up in a rather abusive home this song was a great source of strength!

Burt Reynolds was one of the 1st people to tell her she was going to be a big movie star. He said she just giggled when he told her this. You can just hear the exchange, can't you?! They remained very good friends since working together in The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas. They were both fantastic in it! A perfectly cast movie.

I wish "Light of a clear Blue Morning" could have been a big hit? Loved the original production of the song, January 1977, great to hear Dolly as a producer without Porter controlling things. I pull this album out ever once in a while and play it, great music.

It's probably just a coincidence, but on her first appearance on the "Tonight Show" with Johnny in 1977 (she'd appeared in earlier years with guest hosts), she sang "Light of a Clear Blue Morning", and then here, on her last appearance with Johnny before he retired, and she sang "Light of a Clear Blue Morning" again.

Born in Brooklyn and raised on Long Island. A friend had only two more states to go and I was the only one who volunteered to go to Arkansas. Just got back yesterday. Needed a Dolly Day to detach from that wonderful place. Warm, witty and wonderful people like Dolly. Saw Dolly earlier today performing with her parents and many of her siblings. She just makes you feel like part of her family!

This song is indeed about Porter Wagoner and her finally breaking away from him and his controlling nature. Dolly went through 9 years of hell, but to this day loves Porter with a heart of forgiveness.

Dolly was only with Porter Wagoner for 7 years. She originally was under contract for 5 but agreed to stay for an additional 2 years. She has never referred to this period as being "hell" she has always shown gratitude to Porter for his help in starting her career. She did say that there were difficult times, and they fought creatively and personally. But this was because in the mindset of the 60's and 70's Nashville was the boys club. Dolly never wanted to be part of a duo act. She had always had the intention of being a solo act. So as any business relationship that work as close as they did personal feelings do get hurt when one says they want to leave. She indeed wrote I Will Always Love You as to tell him good bye but I appreciate everything you've done for me but I need to go. So I wouldn't say it was pure hell. And it certainly wasn't 9 years.

14:18 This was a really missed opportunity for DP to sing ‘I Will Always Love You’ to JC. Who let this happen? Seems like a ‘Tonight Show’ producer would have coordinates this.

I think she was about to release “Light of a Clear Blue Morning” as her next single, and so she opted to perform that, but you’re right, IWALY would have been appropriate. In the old days, musical guests did two songs, but by ‘92, they’d cut it to one. Seems they could have made an exception here, and let her sing IWALY to Johnny.
