The Tofinu people: the fishermen of Benin | SLICE
More than fishermen, the Tofinu people are sea farmers. All around Ganvie they keep fish farms which are like sea paddocks.
When they planted palm leaves in their saltwater lake they invented these acadjas or artificial mangrove swamps which have provided them with a means of subsistence for three centuries.
After several months of waiting, Baba Fudji's acadja is ready to be harvested. Tomorrow, with the help of some of his men and Hubert who will accompany him for the first time, he plans to raise his first net. It's an important day in the year of a Tofinu fisherman.

@@RS-xo3rb Pescatarianism is an awesome diet as long as the fish is not contaminated by microplastic. This lake probably has little microplastic.
I have never seen so much colorful clothing in one place! what lovely people!

Good 👍
Their story sounds just like Venice settlement story. But when you translate where they do they always seem more Japanese. We often have way too many documentaries that are still biased to Western standards, it’s nice to see a different perspective or at least less perspective biased one way or the other, it seems that he provides well for his family look at their clothing and their home are immaculate

And where does the sewerage go?
so, they are wearing beautiful pyjamas all day, there is no pollution, they build "homes" for their fish to live in and harvest them sustainable, got a dj at their church(a muslim an christian church nonetheless), and when we all drown because sea levels are rising they just build their houses a bit higher out of the water. they beat modern civilisation at every level

What this video doesn't show you is stench and filt all over that place. I visited it while in Benin, and it was one of the most disgusting places I've been to ever. That lake is covered in floating feces, dead animals and garbage.
i have watched industrial fishing where they are pulling 50000 huge tuna fish in one pull and then i watched this video...just unbelivable balance
💯
Slice please make it possible to download your vids .

What the child doesn’t understand is that fishing is the only living that will keep him free and independent. One day when his EV is turned off because he didn’t get a shot he will understand but it will be too late.

Your name is freedom but I don’t think you believe in what it means? If the young man wants to make a living elsewhere, he can do that. He is young and free to make mistakes. Don’t wish him doom and cast your disbelief on him.

If fish are only way to eat and make money and theirs 50000 of them, the fish numbers must be low,a lake like can't sustain that number for ever, they might need to stop fishing so fish stocks go up, but what will they do then.
