While I may not disagree with everything you said, let's keep things in perspective. Would more light be better in a number of circumstances? Sure. However, we cannot expect a light to be bright enough to solve all problems either. Sometimes when I experiment clearing indoors, a 1000 lumen light bouncing on things in front of me, or even bouncing off objects I want to see glares too much at times, especially considering that these are types that only has one brightness settings and usually used in situation not calm enough to fiddle wiht brightness settings. I started with an X200, and then switched to X300 soon after it came out. TLR7 has multiple times output compared to those. Sure, X300 Ultra might be twice as bright and even more intense in candela. However, these things tend to keep leap frog. I say there is a fat chance that TLR7 is brighter than about half of X300 models currently on law enforcement officer's guns which those officers purchased many years ago. Not every cops go buy the latest and greatest, and it is not like an old model X300 with not even 200 lumes is better for no other reason that it is a Surefire. But, I don't see anyone urging cops to replace the old X300. Okay, maybe you might. And, it is not always about brightness. I find it not practical to flip down the bad flip up-down switch design of the X300 if I need to shoot one haded with any reasonable degree of ease. While I do appreciate Surefire's reliability and toughness, ergonomic or other area wise, it is a company that is pathetic in terms of innovation. I am not even talking about something mindblowing. Even in simple things like a better switch design, there is very little improvement in anything from them.

As a civilian, my question to an officer or anyone using a light for duty purposes would be, shouldn’t you not be using this light in some of the ways you mentioned. Such as in a nighttime traffic stop. Because then you just pointed your firearm at a potentially innocent person. Shouldn’t the gun only be aimed at someone when a real threat is posed. Therefore a regular flashlight in an opposing hand is the proper method? Asking this question honestly. Not sure what the proper legal use of a weapon light is in these instances

My rule: The bigger the gun, the bigger the light. PS. The TLR7 does appear to have diffuser over the LED. If you look at it side by side with a TLR1 you can see what I am talking about. I would be very curious how the light would behave without that. As for CCW purposes, the light is there for more than one reason. Yes it provides you with light to see a target, but it also serves as a way of preventing your pistol from being pressed out of battery. Now when you bump up to the compact 4" pistol you need to consider a TLR1 or TLR1 HL as the TLR7 isn't going to jut out enough. Just a little food for thought. Of course there are pros and cons to everything. If you like the handheld only life then more power to you. At the end of the day it's up to the individual to decide why they want to incorporate somwthing into their system.

  • @asomeguy3000

I think what’s driving this for at least the Walther PDPs is Safariland. You can’t get a level 3 holster for the duty lights like TLR or X300. The level 3 holsters all have the baby lights as options. It grinds my gears.

wish more people made holsters for the tlr9 as it keeps the great switches from the 7 but has 1000 lumens and while not as good as the x300u, its close. A turbo style revision on both tlrs would also be great.

Honest assessment. I carry a pistol with a TLR-7A. It's an excellent light for it's size, but the lights on my larger non-conceal carry pistols are SureFire X300s. For what it's worth, I have drop tested the TLR-7A on concrete. It passed.

The 300 does well at further distances and when overcoming rearward lighting. Up close, it completely washed out the persons face, not allowing any positive identification. It also reflected so much off the weapon, at times made it hard to visually see. Both have their pros and cons.

I have a tlr-1 on my old duty weapon, and the tlr-7 on my CCW weapon...I understand the difference.... But the argument that officers are using a weapon mounted light at nighttime traffic stops to do initial contacts and identify threats...at least thats how I'm understanding your delivery, is kind of scary. Every nighttime encounter I had started with my flashlight out. It was against every department policy I've ever heard of to simply wave our weapons around at citizens to determine if they had a weapon in their hand or not.

Seen guys on ODAs running TLR-7s over surefires. I think it's a personal preference thing. When room clearing having to bright of a light can be overwhelming for you and everyone else clearing the room having an negative effect. That's why the surefire rifle lights are great. Not to bright and not to dim. It really all depends on the mission. If it's a house gun lean towards a TLR-7. If you are a cop on patrol then go surefire.

Now I know I’m late to the party watching this video, but this light is incredibly popular for people who concealed carry due to its small footprint in conjunction with holster comparability, we should also consider the fact that not all threats are gonna be up close and personal, I currently run this light on my carry gun, now I’m considering changing that after watching this video!

Some duties require concealment above all. In that role the TLR7 is really the only option. We issue both the X300U and TLR7. The TLR for concealed duty use and the X300U for higher profile OWB uses. Additionally we require/teach that a quality handheld be utilized in conjunction with the TLR7 when running the pistol concealed.

Swapped from a TLR 7 to a TLR 1 HL for the very performance reasons you listed. It's not even the brightest/most candela on the market, and it's still a huge improvement. The extra weight and bulk on my 19 are hardly noticeable carried AIWB.

Slide/light length really doesn’t matter for AIWB until it’s long enough to impede leg rotation. Most people can fit a full length slide no problem. The longer slide may even help push the grip into your body.

Our agency has been issuing the TLR-7A for a while. Prior to that it was the 300 lumen TLR-1. For those that already had the TLR-1 and wanted to swap to the 7A, I'd do a quick demo of how the 300 lumen TLR-1 had more candela and usable lighting despite having less "power." The controls are better, but really only if you're a lefty who hasn't trained to toggle the constant off. I think the best light in TLR7 form factor, right now, is the Sig Foxtrot2. It's the only light id recommend in that form factor despite lack of holster options and sensitive controls.
