The Titanic Could Have Survived the Iceberg Hit

The Titanic sank in April 1912 but we're still wondering what exactly happened on that day and if the tragedy could be prevented. There were over 2,400 passengers and crew members on board the infamous ship. And over 1,500 people never returned back home...
But the Titanic might have been another tale if it hit the iceberg head-on. When a ship hits an iceberg head-on, all the force is transferred back to the ship. So would it survive the collision? Would it continue sailing and make it to its final destination? Let's find out...

Captain was not setting a speed record, more that accepted policy then was to sail through ice filled water fast, so as to reduce the time spent in the ice area, instead of slowing down, to allow a longer time to cross, but also allowing time to avoid the larger ice pieces.

This statement is indeed correct. To a point. They didn't slow down because the last ship to sink to an iceberg collision was in the the early 1870's and only 8 years or so prior to Titanic, the last iceberg collision was with a 690 ft, four funneled steamer weighing at 27,000 tons and was able to make it back to port for repairs at reduced speed.

Steel bends and folds as it experiences pressure. If Titanic struck head on people would have been atomized, yes, but only about 80-100 feet of the hull would be destroyed. While that is serious damage, it only encompasses the two foremost compartments of the ship. The remaining two would flood, making a total of four damaged compartments - the threshold of Titanic’s buoyancy. Tl;dr, Titanic would survive a head-on collision.

  • @rodenithing2

In fact, the whole question of would the Titanic have survived the "first" iceberg hit is irrelevant. They were just crossing the limit of the ice zone which was by then entirely ahead of Titanic. Had the Titanic cleared the iceberg it encountered on April 14th then it very probably would have collided with the NEXT iceberg. The frequency of the icebergs was rapidly increasing toward the middle of the ice zone. This would also have nullified the effect of possibly slowing down the ship after the first near-miss. They were doomed from the very moment they decided to steam through the ice zone by night. Reports from the Carpathia steaming to the disaster scene reveal that they were CONSTANTLY dodging icebergs and had almost miraculous luck as they did not crash and sink themselves as well.

Concerning it was Moonless night, the water was flat like a coin with no waves breaking and you had the Cold-water mirage effect. It all worsened the condition. Fleet and Lee did nothing wrong, and it's a miracle in fact they spotted the iceberg with 500 meters to go at all.

This is aasuming, its going full speed. The put it to full reverse. Most likely, it would have been much slower. Plus the ice would have moved too, not be stationary like a brick wall. I vote head on, but the logical choice, is try go around it, and you have a few seconds. Im also pretty sure, going into reverse, then turning makes the turn less effective? So either maintain speed and full turn, or full reverse and stay head on.

It is highly unlikely it would have sunk in a head on collision, it would have not even breached the collision bulkhead. And there would have been no shock wave. The front of the ship would have acted as a shock absorber there would have been NO shock wave. Also ice is far softer than steel and the iceberg it's self would have absorbed a pile of impact by chunking off pieces of the iceberg. There are piles of other ship that have suffered full speed head on collisions with other ships and icebergs and few to none have sunk.

Larger ships can absorb far more energy and handle HIGHER velocity impacts than smaller ones. Again you lot have ZERO clue what you are talking about. Errors: 1. First class tickets were not £3,000, they were £400, only the 50 feet long staterooms, which had their own decks, were £3000. 2. Captain Smith didn't want the speed record. Ships like the Mauretania were always going to beat Titanic in terms of speed, Ismay more wanted to beat the Olympic's maiden voyage speed. 3. Engineers did understand temperature.....It wasn't 5000 BCE. They had made the steel to withstand cold water to prevent shattering at minor inconveniences and also to withstand any hot temperatures to prevent melting. They also, surprise surprise, didn't have the materials for it. 4. The recovered hull pieces had....idk about you, been sitting at the bottom of the Atlantic, and were probably involved in the split, which is what happens when metal is ripped apart..... 5. There would not be more survivors if the ship hit the iceberg head on. Like you said, the ship would sink in minutes. It would've sunk in minutes. Probably no one would've survived, as, even if the position was transmitted, it wouldn't have mattered, because it was incorrect.

They actually did. The Captain ordered a longer route further south that was meant to be safer and stay away from icebergs. The idea that they were trying to set a record was false. The titanic was advertised for luxury, not speed. So they did take precautions. Ironically it was him taking the safer route to avoid icebergs that put them in position to hit.

How do we know this? It is well known that the titanic was designed to sustain some damage. Now, let me put this up for scrutiny. Ships are designed with expansion joints so they are able to flex on high seas. But, what would have happened if the titanic collided head on with a solid mass such as an iceberg? Was a crash test ever conducted with a solid stationery object? As far as I know, no such tests were ever conducted, therefore, there is no way of knowing if the titanic could have sustained the damage caused from a head on collision with an iceberg. In saying this, has anyone ever conducted a crash test with a scale model of the ship and the iceberg? The only way we will ever know is if an experiment was undertaken with a scale model of the titanic, and the iceberg. And the weather conditions that night would need to be duplicated exactly. ( The water depth, the direction of the current, the weather conditions, the weight of the vessel etc.) Perhaps then we could accurately determine if the titanic disaster would have turned out worse, or better.

They turned hard starbird I think, but regardless they reversed the engines and turned hard. If they reversed the engines but continued head on, that would’ve made a small difference….. the guy in this video explaining the impact, he didn’t mention the difference it would’ve made to reverse the engines. Even if it were only a small difference, it would still be a difference and maybe a small difference would have made all the difference in the world in regards to it sinking or not. Also, a survivor from the titanic mentioned in an interview that he felt the ship come to an abrupt stop, went up to the deck where he saw some ice pieces on the ship deck but the time he took getting up deck made it to where he didn’t see the glacier. He said all was still, even the water was still. So if he felt an abrupt stop and that wasn’t felt as a big impact, I’d imagine the same for the head on collision scenario. I don’t think people would’ve been flying in the air like this video shows……but there are so many variables who knows….just the idea that a head on collision and reversing the engines could have saved more people and that the ship could have even finished its course eventually is crazy to consider…..what if……

So you told us that the part the iceberg hit was burning for weeks, right? Well let me give a small scientific explanation on that please: Because the metal was absorbing lots and lots of heat energy, the bonds between it’s atoms were getting much weaker, as the atoms gained more power, so the atom structure was vibrating more. This combined with the huge kinetic energy of the ship at full speed hitting the even heavier iceberg would have allowed a simple task for the iceberg to cut through the Titanic. So perhaps if there wasn’t any part burning and if the ship wasn’t at full speed, there might have been less than 6 compartments flooded. Remember, the more compartments that were flooded, the faster the ship would sink, as the weight of the water inside the ship would cause a big gravitational pull downward towards the bottom of the ocean.

I think it’s ridiculous to say he could’ve not known? You see the distance of the object and as a naval officer and being educated about the design of the ship and the history and physics you speak of would be within the scope of his abilities. I think it’s ridiculous a naval officer to expect the ships speed and distance would still somehow be completely avoided and wouldn’t have known that the sides would not be damaged. Furthermore you say ships were designed to withstand front collision - so why wouldn’t Murdock know this? I’m not saying what he shouldn’t or should’ve done I just think it’s ridiculous to say he couldn’t have known or assessed that option. And certain captains historically decided a head on collision.
