This ending is so bittersweet. When he disappears he goes back to a time where they were all together and happy while she and Alba are left alone without him, it's almost a little unfair. But at the same time she gets the opportunity to hold and embrace her husband again after he's passed away and that is a beautiful gift to have.

As a hopeless romantic this scene is heartbreaking enough, but a scene where he would time travel when she is an old lady still waiting to see him for one last time in each other's arms with loves last kiss before she takes her last breath dying in his arms would utterly destroy my poor fragile soul.

What gets me every time is the look of mutual heartbreak between mom and daughter. Then they gather up his stuff together and walk away reminiscing about him. So much is said, yet unsaid in those moments. It’s heartbreaking and beautifully done.

This scene always crushes me. And I'm a 6'2 red blooded American male.

Watching her run to him brings me to tears. What an incredible gift to get to see him one more time. And while I know time travel isn’t real, watching the last few minutes of the movie I wish it was. I still miss my husband everyday.he’s been gone 22 years.

I am so sorry for your loss. We lost my dad almost 16 years ago, and I don't know what it's like for my mom but I saw how it looked. They had been married for 18 years, and as a husband myself now I constantly worry about what my wife will go through if she outlives me. I hope you have many sources of joy as well.

This ending is so sad, but so beautiful when she is running down to the field like when she was a little girl. Brings a tear to my eyes every time I watch this movie!.

He doesn't want her to spend her life waiting, but since he doesn't tell her the times he'll actually BE there or if it's ever going to happen again, she'll spend the rest of her life WAITING for him to come at any time until the day she dies. Always laying out clothes, always looking over her shoulder. Good plan!

The original ending to the movie matched the book. They filmed a scene where Henry meets Clare as an old woman. But test screening audiences didn't care for it so they had to redo the ending. That's why the film was delayed a year. They had to wait for the correct season for the meadow and Eric had to grow his hair back from shaving it in the 2009 Star Trek movie.

@@PrincessSerene He DID know. Every time he traveled to the future beyond the point where he died, when he went back he could have said "I'll be here at this time." In his timeline Alba is a baby, so he had like 4 years worth of time to let her know that hell be there & when? Since he knew before that he was going to die later, he had years of randomly going to the future after his death & each time when he went back he could have told her & she could have written it down, "Oh, this morning I traveled to this place, you said the date was yada yada. Meet me there at this time." But instead, she'll never know when he's coming or if he ever will or where to be so every day she'll think he could pop up any second or wonder if he popped up & she missed it. The way they end it shows that's exactly what the mom & daughter will do. They'll keep waiting.

This is one of four movies in which Rachel McAdams stars as the love interest of a time traveler. The other ones are About Time (2013), in which she played the wife to Domhnall Gleeson's character, Midnight in Paris (2011), in which she played the fiancée of Owen Wilson's character, and Doctor Strange (2016), girlfriend of the title character. In none of the films does her character travel through time in any way.

Marine of 5 tours of combat, and I never cry. But this movie makes me cry so hard... Maybe because I came home to find out that cancer is killing me and I just entered stage four. I feel so bad to leave my beautiful wife and daughters now that I'm home. Life is ironic huh? I'll die in a VA hospital bed and not in combat. But I REFUSE TO EVER SAY WHY ME? WHY NOT ME! the greatest Looking into it. I'm the young kid drowning and will try anything that doesn't cost money. I have accepted my fate and understand that my wife will remarry and I will be buried alone. She's too young to not find happiness once again nor do I want that for my daughters. Life doesn't stop for any of us and once you are gone, who cares who is buried next to you. We'll all meet again. Maybe not rapists and murderers of young children, but we'll all meet again. Many blessings to all.

The most heartbreaking moment for me was when Alba pleads with Henry to sing and being from when she was a baby, he doesn't understand her meaning that singing could keep him there longer (he doesn't find out until a few years later for him when talking to his present Alba). Alba would get to see her father again a year later for her when for the first time from Henry's perspective he meets her.

Didn't he meet the 10 year old alba when Clare was pregnant. He went back and said "we name her Alba". If this Henry is from when Alba is a baby then he has already seen the 10 year old version of Alba who mentions the singing.

That is so tragic. I find this scene so beautiful but so heartbreaking at the same time. The pure joy in Clare eyes are so poignant. But I can't imagine how can someone grief in this context ? She had a beautiful life with him while he was alive, but will she be able to move on while always knowing her husband can show up at any time for a few moments ? Can she be able to meet someone else knowing she might have to tell at some point her past husband ? If she did so, it might have affect their relationship while they still together. I'm so glad, I can't time travel after watching this movie. What a movie.

They are both broken hearted but the knowing smile from the daughter knowing it's what the mother needs gets me every time. They miss him together, both with broken hearts.x

the only time she sees him again after his death is when she's like 90 years old. he wrote her a letter before he died saying how they'd see each other again eventually, so she basically spends her whole life waiting for him.

The problem with this movie is he was older than the amount of days he spent with her, and he was gone for days and weeks at a time between time jumps, so there's a huge time gap considering his age, meaning half of his life had to be spent with him still coming around many times after this moment.

No, in the book Henry travels to the past way way more than the future. And in the book ending which didn’t tear well with audiences, Clare sees him one last time when she is 82.

Is it just me or ... Does he sound quite a bit like Chris Evans?

The sad thing is that in the book the scene is similar, only in that Claire is 82 years old and Henry is 43...she spent all her life waiting for him 😢

Its ok there is part 2 called Midnight in Paris where she moves to California and gets engaged to time traveler and they go Paris, but it doesn’t work out and he dumps her. In part 3 called About time she moves to London and marries a time traveler and they live happily ever after.

"I don't want you to spend your life waiting", yeah kinda late for that now, especially considering the years of grooming and mental conditioning as a child.

I actually don't feel sad.. I think it's a happy ending as in the end, it's a bit selfish to assume you're guaranteed 80 years together, I mean 20 years is a long time and they've done so much in those years with an almost perfect life. He can now enjoy the next few years in peace knowing that eveything will be alright... she can look back at their time together with joy.. and she has the daughter who continues on with some of his traits and personality.

I just rewatched this movie and I still don’t get the ending.... he says half way in the movie that he has never travelled past a particular point he mentions a rough age which we assume is around his death. So how is this ending possible? This ending takes place 4 years after his death. In the years between that statement and his death are we to assume he gained the ability to travel at any point in the past or future?

He can’t control where or when he goes but most of the destinations he travels to are tied to his subconscious. Big events draw him in, like his mother’s fatal accident or the woods/meadow where he meets Clare and inevitably gets shot by her father. It’s not that he couldn’t travel past that particular point in time, it’s that he hasn’t travelled further yet, at least not until certain events happen. An example is how Clare knew Henry when they met in the library, she already had a history with him but he hadn’t experienced it yet. He only starts travelling to her past after he marries her. So when they’re arguing about having kids he mentions he never sees them with a child, even when her next pregnancy is going well and she’s picking out names he tries to not get his hopes up but is suddenly transported to the future where he meets their 10 year old daughter. It is also during this visit he discovers how old she is when he dies and how much time he has left. This ending implies that in the time between Alba’s birth and his death he’s already travelled to different points in time, to the past and future. (Even in the book’s ending he travels to the future when Clare is old and stays with her until she passes away.) He never does get the ability to decide where/when to travel but one could say its his subconscious that draws him to the future beyond his own death to be with his family.

No it isnt. He doesnt begin to travel back to see her until after he meets her as an adult in the Library and has built a relationship with her. He doesnt know who she is when they meet in the library remember. He builds a relationship with the adult Clare as an adult, he falls in love with her whilst they are both adults and only then then begins to travel back in time and then meets her as a child in the meadow. Henry did not groom Clare at all.

Why he keep traveling back , does her wife died in the future?

Because by singing she’s able to control her time traveling at will, unlike her dad so she told him to sing in hopes he can control it too but he tried before and it didn’t work for him.

The ending was meh, there’s only so much u could do when the time traveler is now dead and u need him back in the final scene, but the final scene should of been at least his death, his death was already inevitable, but still. He should of told her to not spend her life waiting before he died, why did he wait till 4 years after his death. He knew he wouldn’t see them again till alba was 9 and years later he finds out he would die when she’s 5 so he should of told his wife to not spend her life waiting right before he dies not 4 years later lol.
