Her bad day was due to them: they blocked the stairwell with the time machine and cost her a day's pay (something Sheldon never hesitates to point out as a sign of being inferior to them).

These little moments when the 4 of them just geek out and have fun were so rare yet entertaining

I know I am late to the party but calling out 4 renown scientists for "wasting their time" as a part-time waitress and failed actress seems a little bit weird to me.

They apartment is way bigger than Penny's, if they wanted a smaller apartment they could pay rent by themselves. She is insulting their hobby, but in reality, she's mad at their selfishness... the insult to the hobby was just her venting about their selfishness.

2:48 scenes like this is why Seasons 1, 2 and 3 of TBBT are a high watermark for me, not just for TBBT, but for all sitcomes. Some of this is absolute comedy magic!

Sheldon and leonard can easily pay for their rent if they want but they split it to save money and sheldon even said he has a built up savings account for years and he only spends around 49% of what he earns thats why. Thats not being broke, its.called being smart with money. The show is clearly sexist and biased towarsa money, a real life waitresss would absolutely have no possibility of living in an expensive apartment like that by oneself.

Cause the rest forgot about it and didn't care. Plus, they all understood that she was just venting and didn't really mean it... Leonard only took it to heart because he himself feels insecure and unworthy of her, and she forgets that he feels that way sometimes. Maybe logically, Leonard knew that she didn't really mean that.. but emotionally, he felt she did. And often times, even if you logically know they don't hate you or look down on you, if you feel like they do, it would make you feel bad.

It's not that she hates his geekiness... she just doesn't want that stuff around the house. She loves his geekiness. She just doesn't want to be known as one. If she wants to change a single part of him, it'd be how he's a push over towards her; but she also accepts that it's because he's been scarred and probably won't be able to change that. What she's worried about is that it would continue too far and their marriage would dissolve into what Amy's parents have. To her, Leonard and Sheldon are the most important people and she would do almost anything for them. Yah, she's going to be difficult at times. People can be difficult. But in the end, she will stick through thick and thin for them and would sacrifice anything for them.

Just because she dislikes the stuff doesn't mean she dislikes the person. She's supportive of their activities.... she just doesn't want it to be front and center around the house. You are making it seem worse than it really is. My parents hated that I collected Yugioh and Pokemon cards. But that doesn't mean they hate me. For crying out loud, my wife makes the money and hates me liking waifus, and only lets me have a certain space for that stuff, but that doesn't mean she hates me. You need to remember, it's not the most looked up to hobby. You shouldn't take that so personally. Instead, you should try and understand where they are coming from. Penny loves Leonard and would stick with him through almost anything. Sure, she can be difficult at times. But they move on from that. And she let him keep his geek stuff in the end. She was just trying to go as far as she could before he figured it out. Hell, Leonard didn't even notice for the first while. That is important to remember. But the people she loves most in the world are Leonard and Sheldon. And frankly, she took upon herself a mother role for a man around the same age as her, being caring and supportive. But I like how you are ignoring that part. People aren't built off of either being all good or all bad. It's that they have good points and bad points and you got to deal with that.

@Yèlena Honestly; you are the one that sounds shallow. She was causing trouble (for a bit) for his hobby and you seem to hate her. And frankly, the fact that my mother raised me my entire life, took care of me and showed me endless love doesn't change just because she dislikes my hobby. In the end, it's not considered a very honorable hobby and it's only recently that people started to be okay with it. You want people to understand and be accepting of you, but then you don't want to do the reverse.

this part was real sad, Leonard was just having fun with his friends, who is proud of who he is and not ashamed of him of being a nerd. That is until Penny being a complete bitch who devastated him with those cruel words, he later wanted to change to impress Penny and get rid of the time machine. I guess the moral of the story is Don't be ashamed of who you are.

CC&Z This episode really hits home for me. I don't disclose this to a lot of people but I myself am a time traveler. However my time-traveling abilities have two slight limitations. Firstly, thus far , I have only been able to travel forward in time. I have yet to unlock my ability to travel to the Past. The second limiting factor in my time traveling is that the process does not happen as instantaneously as you would expect.. It is actually a rather slow process. In fact, to give an example , in order for me to travel say one month into the future it takes approximately 30 days...

I love how they have fun calculating how to travel through time. The only problem is that in the original book and movie, you don't set the dials and go there, you push the lever to travel into the future at a steady rate, watch the dials until you get to the time you want, then reverse the lever until you have stopped. But still, good God, do I want that time machine!

Absolutely right. Absolutely right. I said above but I love as well how the guys have dealt with a lifetime of being ignored, used or abused by women who see themselves as out of their league so that, except for Leonard initially until a bit later in the episode, they all just brush it off and continue with what they're doing without a second thought. This is nothing new for them (as we find out in the Dennis Kim episode) so they don't even pay it any mind and good for them.

The first episode of Big Bang that I saw. I was hooked as a forever fan the moment Leonard spins the time machine wheel. I think it's one of the funniest moments in television history.

remember that Leonard didn't know it was gonna be a life-size version of the time machine. although it was partially their fault, she still had no right to say those things to them. Who was she to criticize them about their interests? Like she said at the end of the episode, "It's the things you love that make you who you are."

Couple of things about what Penny said: It was rude, very unfair and hypocritical of her - a struggling actress and part-time employed waitress to call 4 grown men who had studied hard to achieve advanced degrees/PHDs and careers in science PATHETIC. To be fair to Penny, however, because they were moving the time machine up the staircase, it affected her as she missed her work shift so she was right to be mad at them there, but she could have just left earlier to make it on time since she was already running late. Finally, although it was rude, she was not wrong to call Leonard pathetic, because he was completely pathetic as he let her get in his head and considered throwing out all of his collectibles, action figures and comic books all because of her saying what she said. She might have apologised, but Leonard had no backbone to stand up for himself and no common sense that it was wrong for him to let her get in his head like that.

This is such a bullshit examination of this incident. Penny isn’t at fault for not leaving early, this is one of those things a person should ideally do so things are better off but not something you can blame them for not doing or use as an excuse to mitigate in this case the guys’ blocking the stairwell. Likewise, Penny was justified in being angry at them for how their actions affected her, but had no right to get personal and insult their hobbies. Penny isn’t “not wrong” for calling Leonard pathetic just because Leonard ended up taking that insult to heart. This is such a shitty form of victim blaming, it just isn’t true.

Howard: “Hey, you want to use my time machine? It’s at my FRIENDS house! How lame is that?” XD That’s a good point for Howard. As far as the scolding from Penny, instead of jumping the ‘gap’ to the opposite building’s fire escape, going down their stairwell, she could’ve just helped the guys with pulling the time machine prop on the final flight of stairs and just barely make her shift... after waiting for Howard to come back after throwing up, of course.

well it's hard not to be pissed about losing your shift because of their inconveniences. But yeah she shouldn't have bashed on them for their hobbies and tastes. If the time machine actually worked, then going too far back in time would be suicide by gravity, because the college dorm complex hasn't been built yet. For that matter, even if you only use the time machine at ground level, the fact that it cannot move itself through space would probably result in the user asphyxiating in a vacuum while Earth is in a completely different position in its solar orbit.

the point was plausible and sensible without the "imagine if it was a man" there so many better ways to debate a topic than operating what can be said about genders. She really is a good actress!!! It is not always an easy role that she has to play... So many situations and feelings that she has to play! Anyway, they could have convinced here to move back to the beginning of the day with this time machine. :P

He was travelling into the future and he used backward pressure, whereas Rod Taylor in the movie, and also in Wells' novel, backward pressure sends the traveller and the machine into the past. Come on Big Bang. :(

The 1960 movie "Time Machine" is one of my favorite movies.

I really hated Penny in this episode, but still, it was just season 1 and she did "grow" throughout the series. Besides, it's the "pathetic" ones who later on lent her money so she can stay in her apartment.

Yeah restaurant jobs are hellish and don’t pay well. I’m glad penny found a better gig in pharmacy sales in the later seasons

The only thing “pathetic” about this scene is the waitress/failed actress calling out 4 accomplished scientists just because they can afford to pursue their passions.

As a huge nerd, this is one of the best scenes due to its relatability level. Partying is a waste of time compared to this.

This show makes me glad I'm a such a nerd even after I graduated from high school

Me too. I can't believe they still want to hang out with her after all the time she insults them. They have hobbies that are quite cool, she has none, so she can't say a thing. And how could they know what she would have benn throught? Not their fault, she really is a b*tch when she's mad. Leonard deserves better than her.

To be fair, it's not like she's always bad. I mean, this time, they caused her a lot of trouble. She nearly lost her entire livelihood because of them. Frankly speaking, it is their fault, because they are the ones who blocked the ONLY way to properly get out of the building. During that moment, they were being extremely bad neighbors... and frankly, I feel that people are just mad at the fact that she insulted geekdom rather than the fact that she was in the wrong. It's logically fair to vent and get mad in that situation. And she supports their hobby well enough. I mean, when people hate on characters (or over love them), they often make them 2 dimensional and just pick and choose what parts of the character to focus on. You focus on her insulting them, but ignore every time they cause her problems, and the fact that she often supports them, helps them, nurtures Sheldon like a mother quite often and frankly is an over all good friend... But ya, no, sometimes getting mad and mean like a human being automatically makes her a bad person... even when she had a good reason to be mad...

@@Karomix3 From what I understand yes, she was in the wrong here. She was ALREADY running late and if she had just left on time she would not have gotten stopped by the guys. She also leeches off of Leonard and Sheldon, taking food, money, and wifi from them without ever paying them back a single thing. She has no business calling them pathetic and unsuccessful.

She called Howard ' pathetic and creepy' in s2e12 . Kripke pointed out that there all '' pathetic and creepy and can't get girls.'' The guys were kind of pathetic and creepy at the time . Howard definitely was . Raj was pathetic and creepy because he couldn't speak to women and was using satellites to spy on women from America's top model and Sheldon cleaned Penny's apartment in s1e2. That's so creepy because they just met the previous episodes and only started to become neighbours . They didn't know each other well at the time. They lives have changed for the better when they met Penny. If it wasn't for Penny , Raj would still be unable to speak to women, Leonard and Sheldon would still have no social skills and if Penny didn't introduce Howard to Bernadette , he would still be the lonely creep he was in the early seasons.

She is just a mean shrew that has nothing but sarcastic comments for everyone, no redeeming qualities other than her cup size. Penny turned out to be the same, to a lesser degree. Both of them are cruel to these guys. Howard and Leonard would've been better off without them. Without Penny, Leonard would've ended up with Alex, who actually respected him.

Well Considering what they have achieved and the amount of schooling and work it took..... it looks pretty illogical to spend time and money on something which doesn't even work

Penny says that they are pathetic and wasting their lives on comic books and toys and costumes. The irony of this situation is that all the guys have stable jobs and can afford to buy stuff for themselves(I'm not even going into their educational qualifications) whereas Penny is a failed actress who works as a waitress at the Cheesecake Factory and mooches off of guys for food, wifi and even her rent.

I get that and understand that. I guess its the idea, I like her and all, but Penny can be very irresponsible sometimes. It wasn't like they did it on purpose, but I agree with one of the posters, maybe they should have given a heads up to let people know they were bringing it up the stairs. She didn't have to be a total bitch, their things are collectible items, and can be worth a lot in the future. She said they were pathetic, but she's always looking to them to help her with everything.

I wish I had a real life working time machine that could take me back into the past and stop a horrific nightmare from turning into reality

I have seen Friends, Two and a half men multiple times but I could not even bear this one for once.

damn this show makes me wish I had geeky friends like the 4 geeks but most of my freinds are either Penny , Amy or a Bernadette while some are geeky but not geeky enough :/

And this is the chick that he married at the end of the series. God I hate penny.
