Kaanak (Ruth Demmert) was raised traditionally, living and learning from her grandparents and the Elders of Kake, AK. Today, Demmert is a respected Elder and Lingít language teacher. Even in the face of opposition, she has been a strong advocate for language revitalization. She has dedicated her life to perpetuating the Lingít language and culture for her community and the Native community.
