The Time General Grievous Fought Alongside Obi-Wan and the 212th [CANON]- Clone Wars Battle Tales #5

The fifth and final issue of the Clone Wars battle tales series has finally been released, and with it, we are thrown straight into the heat of battle, as Obi-Wan Kenobi and the 212th are captured and taken prisoner by General Grievous, where they are forced to work together to escape the icy world that they are stuck on. Awesomely, we also get to see Commander Cody and the 212th gear up in Clone Cold Assault Armor for the first time ever!
So, I’m going to break down exactly how Obi-Wan and General Grievous were forced to work together to escape a treacherous icy planet.
Just like all of the previous issues of the comic, we threw right back into the action on the tropical world of Hisseen, directly following the massive blast that buried Captain Rex under a large mound of dirt.
Following the massive and destructive blast Captain Rex attempts to call for Commander Cody and Commander Wolffe for support. Rex ensures that all of his men are safe and unharmed from the blast, before Commander Cody arrives to assure Rex that he is uninjured. Cody also informs Rex that the local Hisseenians, who the Clones are still trying to rescue, and all of the other Clones managed to escape the blast, to the absolute relief of Rex.
Before Rex, Cody and Wolffe get a chance to plan their next move, a thumping sound approaches them with their guns draw. A horde of B-1 Battle droids surround the Clone Leaders, saying “surrender republic scum”. Rex is absolutely infuriated by this, replying quickly “You lousy clanker”, but Cody manages to quickly calm him down and tells him that this situation is not that big of a deal compared to the situation he was in with Obi-Wan not long ago.
Now this is where we cut to the flashback, just like all of the other comics in the series. Obi-Wan Kenobi and the Clones of 212th are stationed on the icy moon of Caliban in the deep outer rim.
Obi-Wan and his men have been captured and taken prisoner by the fiendish separatist leader, General Grievous. Despite being captured, Obi-Wan assured Cody and his men that they have been in far worse situations before. In this shot, we get to see the 212th in their awesome Clone Cold Assault Armor, which we last saw the 501st wearing on Orto Plutonia. This is such amazing looking armor, so let me know down below if this is now your favourite 212th armor, or do you prefer the Paratrooper armor which also looks incredible.
Grievous is then flanked by his horde of B-1 Battle droids, as he orders the Clone troopers of the 212th to get to work immediately on building an ice bridge on the moon. Grievous threatens the Clones, by telling them if they don’t begin the rigorous and gruelling construction of the bridge, he will have no choice but to slaughter them in cold blood.
Obi-Wan quickly interrupts grievously however, firmly telling General Grievous that he and the 212th will be doing no such thing for the separatists. Grievous angrily responds “What?”. In response, Obi-Wan tells him that according to the Galactic Accords, which is basically the Star Wars Geneva Convention, no prisoners of war shall be forced into manual labor.
General Grievous is completely filled with rage and fury at this, swiftly hitting Obi-Wan to the ground, calling him Jedi scum. Grievous of course has no interest in following the Galactic accords, further threatening Obi-Wan, telling him “you belong to me Kenobi, and will do as I say, or you will die”.
Because of this brutal action by General Grievous, Obi-Wan, Commander cody and the 212th are forced to begin construction on Grievous’ ice bridge project, despite being in clear violation of Galactic Rules of War.
Obi-Wan mentions that it is a “bit of cold irony that we’ve been tasked with rebuilding it”, to which Gearshift quickly replies “Please sir-- don’t even mention the word cold”. It’s honestly really awesome to see Gearshift make another appearance, long before his death on Geonosis.
As the Clones continue to move the construction supplies through the harsh, freezing cold breeze of the icy planet, Cody sarcastically tells Obi-Wan that it would be tragic if the clankahs suffered some kind of accident using the bridge. Obi-Wan then agrees with Cody’s idea, and orders his men to build the bridge. But nobody said that they had to build it well. Cody understands his General’s orders very clearly, before passing the word on to his men.
As Cody and Obi-Wan are climbing up an incredibly steep mountain face together, they are alarmed by a shockingly loud screech from the mountaintop above them. Cody asks Obi-Wan what the tiny creature is, to which Obi-Wan tells him that it looks like one of the planet’s Native creatures, a Qubey. These guys are literally just an icy, cold version of Ewoks.

I think this would be far too cheesy to be a good Clone Wars episode. Grievous getting defeated by Ewoks is not something we would like to see.

Technically only Grievous committed war crimes, since we have no idea what is in the Galactic Accord of Systems except for the fact you should allow people to surrender and you can't force prisoners to do labor, apparently.

This issue has more significance to Obi than you realize, more specifically Sir Alec Guinness, OG Obi. Search for an old war movie called " Bridge of the River Kwai" our man Sir Alec and his battalion of American soldiers are captured by the Japanese, and forced to build a train bridge for the enemy...or die. Yes, in some ways I am showing my age...but this is too relatable for it to be coincidence

For some reason those in charge of the IP seem to be opposed to the idea of him having any sort of narrative depth or complexity of character, along with opposed to him being impressive at all in a fight. As much as I love the 2008 series, its characterization of Grievous was one of its biggest flaws imo. If we ever get a Grievous-focused story out of modern Star Wars, I really hope it goes back to the Legends roots instead of sticking with the current much shallower characterization and backstory.

The part with Obiwan telling Grievous that he won't be building a bridge is reference to the movie "Bridge over the river Kwai". I love it!
As soon as I saw Gearshift I remembered Geonosis sucks that he died that way.

@Thy Nuts Consumed Grievous was able to fight toe to toe with Mace Windu, could effortlessly kill groups of Jedi on his own (while said groups included council members) and was in general so fast, adaptive and powerful while fighting that he negated any advantage force users had against him 9/10 times. They simply nerfed him into oblivion, just like they flanderized the B1 battle droids so they could market CW as a kid's show.

Rex and Cody’s friendship reminds me of Anakin and Obi-wan’s. Rex got hot-headed and Cody calmed him down😂

I would love to see an alternative version of Star Wars, with Grievous being a Jedi and being a close friend to Obi Wan
The plot is a clever homage to The Bridge Over River Quia', a WW2 epic Alec Guiness starred in years before. Much of it up until the finale is literally a beat for beat recreation until the ending.

I just love Kenobi's sass.
That's a good tribute to the movie," the Bridge on the river Kawai" where Alec Guiness is British war prisoner, who is forced to build a bridge in a hostile region.
At no point did grievous fight with kenobi or his clones. Stop with the click bait titles

I was fearing for the lives of those natives, but then I remembered that this was 2008 Grievous who normally isn't a real menace, also that he had at his disposal mere B1 Battle Droids from 2008 who are even't less menacing, and then I entered an state of calm. Nevermind, this was a nice story.

That Clone Snowtrooper armor Phase 1 looks so cool
This is a very cool storyline with the bad guy and good guy working together.
It's really freaking cool to see Commander Cody and the 212th in their phase 1 snowtrooper gear like we saw with Captain Rex and the 501st wear in the Clone Wars episode Trespass. Good to see clone snowtrooper in orange instead of blue 😊

I literally had a dream last night about Grievous on Hoth, where he accidentally dropped a lightsaber into the snow, melted through into a deep underground cave, then he commissioned an entire separatist mining operation so they could go and find it. So this is strangely relevant.
