Whoops, 4 years late to this review, but here goes: I think a lot of folks didn't see this (and still haven't seen this) for the reasons you didn't. That's such a shame because as with yourself, a lot of people would probably enjoy it if exposed to it...though admittedly, it sure isn't for everybody. It's my favourite film of al time, and is a veritable subtextual onion, which holds endless fascination for me. If ever a film was due a renaissance, it's this one.

I really loved this movie, even going into my viewing with a LOT of reservations. I actually would love to see the other two remade by the director, though I had the impression that he has no interest in that. It really brought a lot more to the table, I think. You definitely pegged it perfectly in your review (the original is hands down a work of visual art.)

Honestly in the best time line we would have even more Luca Guadagnino Argento movies. I would love to see him take the whole trilogy. Especially Mother Of Tears.

Agento made what he did as his interpretation of Lavinia and the Three ladies of sorrow, and I liked all three movies. However, he made them evil and I'm not sure that was accurate. The way the poem or essay describes the three mothers as being more similar to witnesses to sighs, tears then darkness which I think is more like depression rather than there being a supernatural cause. I hope the other two movies as well. I would like to see how it plays out.

Levana. Sorry, had to - obsessed with that bit of the work. That being said, as much as I love Argento's vision for - at least Suspiria and Inferno, looking at Suspiriorum, Lachrymarum and Tenebrarum - he strayed from the source material so, so, so bad. The order in age for the Sorrows, the look of the Sorrows, and please let's not get started on Mother of Tears. In any case, that's just me - but I did love two out of the three movies.

You should watch Climax by Gaspar Noé! I feel that it will make up for disappointment in the color palette! Suspiria 2018 is also my favorite film of all time. Love your review techniques! Keep doing it girl, you’re awesome!

Yep, pretty much my experience with 2018 Suspiria. At this point I just ask people, do you want Suspiria the masterpiece, or Suspiria good with a plot? ...though perhaps sadly to me, most people choose movies with plots.

I know it's a real bummer. I've always found Argentos work to be challenging because of the plot obscurity..they feel like you're walking through a dream and that's not really what everyone is looking for in a film. It's a shame really.

@@GirlBehindTheCounter Of course if Guadagnino wants to come give us a remake of Mother of Tears, there would be no complaints from me. I can't really envision a remake of Tears being possibly worse.

Average Picker Interestingly(well..interesting to me anyway)Guadagnino said,in an interview I saw, that he became a moviemaker because he wants to make horror movies,so that remake of Mother of Tears just might happen.I guess we’d better get used to the Luca Guadagnino aesthetic.

The colors being dull and depressive is about the state of Germany at that time. I dont think it would've made sense for the political side of the narrative to have those bright colors though I really enjoy the originals. They're completely different settings as well like you mentioned the witches are not seen in the traditional sense. In the 2018 version it's somehow much more realistic even though crazy shit is going on in the movie.

Yeah totally agree. This film is so politically different than the original. Focusing a lot more on the post fascist elements of Germany and integrating them into a supernatural story. I'd also say the desaturation adds to this film being so visually different then the OG version. It's almost hard to associate the two. They feel so distinctly different.

I didn't think I was gonna like the new Susperia... & I didn't like the new Susperia. I don't really enjoy most films, I'd say I have pretty high standards. For better & worse I guess.. I kinda feel like the 1977 Susperia is a little bit bad for a good film & the 2018 Susperia is a little bit good for a bad film, sorta. I also felt the 2018film tried too hard to seem like it was unique rather than actually being unique. It also felt both lazy & self-important many times & it didn't sit right with me. I'd rather watch a documentary tbh.. The 1977 film also get allot of undeserved criticism, like ridiculous conspiracy theories about hidden agendas & such, it's just pitiful. It's just an uncanny valley masterpiece with a peculiar pressence, nothing to get the slightest bit upset over.

I'm absolutely shocked that people thought Susperia 1977 had a hidden agenda...that just feels so left field. I do agree Susperia 2018 does feel very self important...but I feel it does have enough unique things for it that respect is deserved. What would you say is your favorite remake ?

  • @TheAlmightiest

@@GirlBehindTheCounter I probably wouldn't say I respect it, but rather that I can somewhat enjoy it & don't dislike it.. But respect for me is a bit too much of a serious thing. I wouldn't disrespect it, that's not what I meant, I think you understand. I guess you can say the people who think the original is full of conspiracies are a bit left field, but honestly these days I'm not so sure if that word is very accurate. So many people are into weird theories about so many different things this last decade. I think some more fitting words might be like obsessive, dense & desperate, to name a few. I really don't know which is my favorite remake.. I remember feeling strongly about how a remake was way better than the original when I was maybe 18 or 19 years old. But I don't remember which film it was unfortunately.. It has been 6-7 years of other things haha, I'm suprised I remembered anything at all honestly. An obvious example of a superior remake is Scarface, but I think that one is the kind of remake you could call a true borderline remake/original. The remake of The Ring is atleast as good as the OG. Those are the only ones I can name at this perticular time.

@@TheAlmightiest I totally get what you mean. How you feel about this Susperia is a bit how I feel about some films like Tintorera or Death Laid an Egg. I enjoy parts of these films and I can somewhat enjoy them as a whole...but they just don't have that "factor" that brings the film from just enjoyable to respected. I do agree about your feelings on Scarface it's one of the remakes that just has surpassed the original. Brian De Palma tends to do great remakes. He is considered the GOLD standard for Carrie remakes.
