three best times to ingest protein shake: 1) as soon as you wake up to break the fast = higher absorption rate 2) right before workout, to prime the muscles / during workout to keep muscles energized / right after workout for quick recovery = higher absorption rate 3) right before sleep to aid in recuperation / growth hormone release = higher absorption rate and there you have it, in less than 1 minute, instead of 8:36 (hahaha, yes i know i cheated with #2)

I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis (similar to Crohn's), so I need to be almost entirely vegetarian, else I have large intestine issues. That being said, my favorite sources of protein (and fat) are the following: 1. chia seeds (high in protein; is a complete protein - contains all the essential amino acids your body needs for protein synthesis; high in fat; high in fiber - 11g fiber of the 12g total carbs). 2. coconut oil (super healthy source of medium chain saturated fat; EVERY CELL WALL IN YOUR BODY NEEDS SATURATED FAT, it's what makes the cell walls flexible and healthy, so eat healthy saturated fats) 3. cashews (high protein, high fat, high fiber, low sugars; also is a complete protein) 4. Any mixture of the above and/or sunflower kernels, natural/organic peanut butter, pumpkin seeds (pepitas). Basically a healthy variety of seed/nut proteins so that I'm definitely getting all the essential amino acids 5. Avocados are high in healthy fat, and also have all the essential amino acids. They also have more potassium than bananas by weight. So there you go. If anyone else has special diet restrictions due to health reasons, or if you're vegetarian/vegan and need more protein ideas, I would be happy to share my ideas.

Nidhi Pareek, basically you want to look into vegetarian sources which are high in what are called the "essential amino acids" (which are amino acids that your body cannot produce, so you must take in from food). Most plant foodstuffs only have some of the essential amino acids in large amounts, so it is a good idea to combine them, e.g. beans and rice.

Prof Gam, I found out through diagnosis from a GI specialist, but my onset symptoms were chronic bloody diarrhea and mucus :/ What is needed to fix it is: regain balance of intestinal flora (take probiotic supplements and/or fermented vegetable like sauerkraut/kimchi/pickles which are probiotic), eat healthy and organic food, cleanse your body of toxins (and stop taking them in as much as possible, like processed food and factory farm foods), maintain a slightly alkaline rather than acidic bodily pH level, and address underlying emotional stress and trauma (emotional stress causes chemical stress which causes bodily stress which causes illness).

Hey got a question. I do intermittent fasting, and I also train fasted in the morning. After I train (3 days training, 2 days HIIT), I have been taking BCAA's after my workouts instead of whey to not disrupt the fasting and add calories. Is this beneficial? Am I still preventing any catabolic state?

So, two things. One, I'm pretty sure that eating right before bed increases the amount of fat that your body is storing. So should I eat something that has a lot of protein but low fat? Like a yogurt maybe? And two, I heard that eating after you brush your teeth or before you brush your teeth is bad because it breaks down the gum quicker. So is it okay to eat an hour after waking up as to avoid this or do I have to risk losing some of my dental hygiene? Thanks in advance

I'm assuming that he's talking about those 2-3 days that he does take protein... I don't think you can quote him ever saying "I take casein protein EVERY NIGHT before bed.... Just putting this out there because I see some of you arguing back and forth about it lol

Katherine, if he says he takes casein protein before he goes to bed that leads to the logical mathematical conclusion he takes it 7 times a week, That is unless he goes 48 hours with out going to sleep then his consumption is 2 times a week.

Of course it’s healthier to eat natural proteins in foods but in order to eat the right amount you will get way too much bad stuff like too much cholesterol/fats etc.. protein shakes are a supplement, not a meal replacement it says it right on the package. It’s just to get you extra proteins that you need. Similar to vitamins. If you can eat 100% of your vitamins in your daily diet that’s amazing but most of us can’t lol

Naomi is right, there are a lot of things in real food that (most) suplements don't account for. If you start your research, there are so many different micronutrients, it's not practical to monitor every one of them. Rather eat as diverse as you can and focus on macronutrients and those key micronutrients (magnesium, zinc, creatine etc.)

First, food proteins are broken down into amino acids. ... Amino acids that are in excess of the body's needs are converted by liver enzymes into keto acids and urea. Keto acids may be used as sources of energy, converted into glucose, or stored as fat. Urea is excreted from everyone's body in sweat and urine. Proteins and Amino acids are NOT stored in the body, thus there is a constant turnover of protein. Please everyone, do your homework on the bodies function. Philip is incorrect on his Amino Acid Pool.

This is more of a personal question, don't know how many other people have the same problem, but I suffer from anxiety and anxiety attacks, so I stopped taking fat burners due to the issue of not being able to breath. I have also noticed that with PWOs, I also suffer from shortness of breath after about an hour of taking it. I have taken ON amino energy and Beyond Raw PWO and both have done the same. Is there any brand or any substitute to PWO that I can possible benefit from. Side note, I usually workout late at night around 10PM.

Protein synthesis lasts for about 48 hours with natural lifters. So the times you should have protein is irrelevant as long as you get it in. That is a bodybuilding myth saying to get it right after the workout

  • @vshred

Yes, but does protein store in the body? No. Therefore to get the optimal effect of protein synthesis, feeding your body with protein every 2-3 hours will keep it rebuilding at a much higher rate.

Protein Synthesis is actually at its highest peak about 24 hours after you work out. Saying that, this would be the most optimal time for most protein intake. Relying on protein and thinking that it's only used for up to three hours after a workout is broscience and has been disproved in multiple studies. It is important for people to understand this and when misinformed you tubers are making claims, it confuses the public even more than we should be.

You said that you would pick food like chicken over protein powder. But what about protein bars? Because you said that our body is made to have foods, not protein powder, so the food will go to better use. But Protein bars are food. So would protein bars be better than protein powder then? Although bars would have less grams of protein most likely, I like one kind of protein bar and it contains 20 grams of protein. Would meals still be a better and more reliable option?

Highlight Reel You're over thinking it man. (Quality)Food is always the best, whey isolate powder 2nd best, everything else is whatever. Protein bars are sneaky because not all the protein in it comes from whey powder; they include protein from other sources, soy for example. The absolute best thing to do is make your own protein bars. But try to eat more real food than powder.

What do you think is in protein bars??? how do you think they get 30grms in a little bar??? unless its natural but then its usually only like 8-10grms. Gainer bars or those chalky chewy type are made out of protein powder so no theyre not better or even the same. They are equal to drinking a shake.

Protein bars are just protein powders. You can make protein bars at home instead of buying. But nothing will substitute real and whole food.

When you say 'before bed', do you literally mean that ? i.e. you take your protein, brush your teeth and go to bed ? I'm getting into the Gym (I'm 54, male, 73kgs) and been doing it for a few months now and absolutely love it. But I have always been of the belief, before gym work, to NOT eat anything after 7:30pm, so that I don't go to bed with a full stomach.... Please can you clarify ? Thanks.

Kinda bullshit. If you get in a high protein meal 2h before your session, guess what? When you finish the training, you still have prtoein in your bloodstream. Learn something about physiology, take some classes. You need to eat anything after the training, just to replenish the glycogen. When you eat your protein does not matter. You don't build muscle 10 minutes after lifting stuff. Unless you are using steroids.
