I think people are getting tired of these frigid perpetual winters that are becoming more extreme. I moved from Ohio to Florida in 2017 and absolutely love the heat! I love walking and jogging in 90° temps. Working up a good sweat, doing yard work and relaxing by the pool are my favorite activities during these hot Florida summer days. I’ll gladly take any hot day in Florida over ONE cold day in Ohio ever again. No more daily ice scraping, no more freezing knuckles when shoveling snow and no more driving with my windows up all of the time.

@@ZachPayneSarasotaRealEstate I understand. It’s the “grass is always greener” perspective. People typically retire and move to warmer climates for a reason. I lived in Ohio for 39 years. Far from retired yet but since moving to Florida in 2017 I’ve never had a sore throat, recurring cough, flu or cold. Coincidence? Probably not. My health feels SO much better since living in Florida. I was so jealous of people who lived in Florida when I was stuck in Ohio. I couldn’t image what it was like to not have to ice scrape frost, ice or snow every single morning before work. Never having to pry a frozen car door open or driving on ice. Even in the SUMMER in Ohio the mornings are frigid! I was ice scraping frost off of my windows in JULY!!! Sure, it’ll warm up to a nice “toasty” 75° by noon but those mornings were FRIGID! Going on year #7 in Florida and the only regret is that I haven’t moved sooner. Should’ve moved here in 1996.

@@Patrick-yh5yd exactly. People who lived here their entire lives don’t realize that they are the envy of most of the northern United States during the fall, winter and spring months. When people are vacationing in Florida during the winter they are literally boasting and posting pics on social media posing by the beach or palm trees. And you’ll see jealous people stuck in the winter up north commenting “must be nice” “jealous” or “bring some of that warm weather back”. I’m just glad that I live where people vacation. There’s a BIG reason why so many people are moving here and driving up costs.

You would be amazed if you could time travel back to 1958 when my family moved there. The little house i grew up in sold for a whopping $11,700 - new. In the 60s County Line Road was a good place to ride a mini-bike or a go-kart. It was a dirt road with hardly any traffic. It is now named University Boulevard. The wife and I are now in a fairly rural area in the mountains. The house we are now in is 813 sf larger than the house I grew up in, and it has a two car garage instead of a one car, also has a detached garage, and is on a lot that is over an acre. According to Zillow, we paid $1090.00 less in taxes here in 2022 than the people who now own the old Sarasota house did. As an old geezer, the heat seemed more unbearable than it did when I was young. Sarasota is a beautiful place, and I'm glad I grew up there, but I like the cooler weather, and less traffic where we are now. It is a better match for a much, much, much older me.

We also have mosquitos practically year-round, but it's well managed by dumping out any collected water. They also don't bother us anymore since I started adding garlic to some of our food every day.

Live in a smaller city in Ontario Canada. $600,000 for a bungalow, $700,000 to $800,000 for a condo. You are looking at over a million or two for a place on the Lake. The weather is good in the summer and winters are getting milder. There is lots of wildlife around but not many lizards and snakes. Traffic is getting worse since I moved here due to some increased population and the development of new subdivisions. This is a tourist area and part of cottage country. Ontario is seeing an increase in severe weather getting more tornadoes then some of the prairies.

I used to vacation in SRQ every spring break but hadn't been there for the last ten years. Then in 2023 we went back and wow was I in for a rude awakening. Trips to anywhere take a minimum of 30 minutes and if you're coming off one of the keys, forget it. It's an hour minimum to anywhere inland. And like you said, you better plan on eating out at 3:30 because after 4:30 you are waiting in line like cattle waiting to be fed. Our plan was to retire there but I don't know now. Bradenton seems easier to get around, and even areas like Palmetto or Nokomis seem more realistic.

Venice and North Port are nice places if you're looking for a less hectic place to call home. But Palmer ranch is still one of my favorite areas for retirees because its so quite with really little traffic through out. While listening to all the negatives about Sarasota, I have been laughing to myself over and over again because we deal with the exact same issues here, where I live, in Ontario Canada. All of us are crammed into tiny neighborhoods into tiny homes that cost well over $1 million. We have nothing but traffic all year round. Don’t forget about all the snow and construction and overpopulation! Don’t forget the highest taxes in almost all the world! Forget about having your pool open for more than three months. stuck in our homes for almost 7 months. You get snakes and wizards, we get mice, rats and raccoons. I don’t think I’ll have a problem “surviving” Sarasota when we move there this spring. Ha ha ha ha!! The problem with Sarasota Florida is that if you're trying to buy a home over here in the city or in the county you're never going to get it because downtown on main Street they're building so many of these ultra luxurious condos/ penthouses that nobody can afford them in the area. I personally feel that the city council is doing this on purpose to attract a different class of people and to push the locals out. If you drive down on MLK on Tuttle their building a new housing complex called Grace water which is going to have homes that are probably going to be over half a million asking just to get into that HOA complex and the thing that I find very irritating is that when they keep building all of these new projects the city and the county is going to have to rezone itself which will cause people to have higher taxes with insurance and HOA dues and everything else that comes with that problem. Whenever the hurricane season gets bad again like last year the whole area is going to tank the value because over by lido Beach / siesta key Beach a lot of the people that bought these ridiculous multi-million dollar mcmansions are selling them out because they've realized that the insurance is going to literally crumble everything around that area. Also the rent over here has gotten to the point where 2000 is now the new normal and the jobs over here do not pay enough money to keep up with the ever-increasing rents I think by the end of the year there's going to be a ridiculous fire sale to get out of the area because right now everywhere you go the congestion has gotten so bad with traffic and everywhere that they put roundabouts in by the Westen is making things horrible. I used to work at one of the hotels as a valet Parker and a lot of the people that I've met don't live in the area they're just there trying to invest in the area since everyone has slammed the area trying to buy into the housing market and that was in 2023 and now everywhere you go people are having their cars repossessed and the homeless are everywhere down by 17th Street by the Rosemary district. If you do decide to live in Sarasota just know that you will become broke and poor because the inflation over here has gotten so bad that a lot of the restaurants are closing down and the service industry over here that's not the Ritz-Carlton is going to drop like a rock.

I lived their back in 94 attending ringling. It was Fantastic back then. Well off everyones radar. The gulf coast cities were still sleepy towns. in fact i had the trifecta of living in sarasota, clearwater and st.Pete in various times. and i seen em all go from complete sleepy towns to the initial trickle and by time the invasion flood occured, i was gone in 2009. But good gracious was i their are the perfect time. my only regret was not buying into the then dirt cheap realestate. again. at that time in the mid 90s no one was even thinking about the gulf coast cities. Tampa was only beginning to get it footing back. but i knew full well what was coming. i remember vintage sarasota, traditional sarasota and modern sarasota. Its a beautiful place, always been . one of the nations best kept secret for a long time. unfortunately what comes with new money also comes with snooty arrogant people. back in the day sarasota had old money, a ton of vets living out their last. but the town was sweet. even to a major degree poor despite the wealth in its geography. god the homes you could buy back then. Living on sieta key was a snooze. i enjoyed it. and even miss it. but its changed now. another overpriced haven for those who buy their way into exclusivity. still. you cant beat the amenities. its just that its far too many people at this point. I remember so many new area first breaking ground. how the place have grown. oh well... gota keep these other secret gem off the radar locations secret as long as possible.

What Zach is saying is true! But people want to get away from the snow and cold. The price to do that is gping up alright, alot!! Sarasota is for retirees, not young people like Zach. Its laid back but is getting busier in some areas, and places you may go. Thank god for home delivery, why shop in person when you do it online!! Walmart, instacart, shipt, uber, door dash, and amazon. If they dont have it, well going to a store isnt going to have it either! So stay home, dont drive, buy gas and auto insurance since its thru the roof here, along with food prices, property taxes, utilities, and medical. But at least the quality and location of medical care is near by to alot of places on the gulfcoast! Sarasota general, bradenton memorial, Tampa general, Advent health, HCA hospitals, baycare, and the VA hospital in tampa and clinics all around! The farther south you go, the more it costs. You should have a retirement income of about $60,000/yr to live on the gulfcoast, at least, with few if any bills!! Alot of people visit here which is fun and have a great time, living here year round, like zack said its hot !! Its not for everyone, so come down and try it out first, then u will know for sure!! Snowbirds come and go, its ok for some, not for others !! BCNU !!!

But these are important thing I feel people need to know about before moving here. It sounds like after hearing them you still prefer Florida! (smart choice)
