The Thing's Television Version Makes No Sense!

Фильм және анимация

Years ago I tried watching The Thing on basic cable. I was confused and horrified by what I was seeing and hearing. I decided to go back and watch it again and do this video explaining some of the bizarre changes and edits that made. They even included some deleted scenes that no longer fit in context with the finished movie.

Like Quentin Tarantino on The Hateful Eight. “You see Child’s taking a drink of the J&B. But what you didn’t see was what MacReady was doing before. While Childs was busy wandering through the snow, MacReady was filling the bottle full of gasoline. So that’s why this chapter is called MacReady’s Got A Secret”

I honestly love the scarface tv version movie, the censors made more sense than the other movies that you mentioned, plus the extra scenes are awesome, Tony's censorship dialog was actually al pacino himself doing all that, the music like the Babylon club scene where the instrumental version of "rush rush get the yeyo" is played insteadthe originalone with lyrics, the ending is more different than the original, and the fall where skull shoots tony was VERY different than the original cut, really love that version!!

This was the version I saw as a kid and watched all the time. I do remember that some of the changes actually helped me follow some parts of the story. Like when Norris has his heart attack. In the narration it mentions he has a heart condition. In the original version, he just stops breathing during the fight with MacReady without any explanation as to why.

The Thing and Halloween 2 was a part of a syndication package of Universal films offered to local stations under the banner of "Universal Pictures Debut Network" in the mid 80's. The films first were distributed one for each month. Later, the films were made available to stations as they wanted. In addition to the violence and sex being cut, deleted scenes were added and sometimes radical changes were made with many films beside these two. Cat People (1982) actually had an altered ending (the original ending had a lot of sex). Dune had many added scenes and ran in two parts. It was disowned by the director David Lynch, whose name is replaced with "Alan Smithe" Both Dune and Psycho 3 began with a prologue made up of what must be concept art, along with narration. The TV edits of Halloween 2, The Thing and Dune have been officially released as extras on special editions (however, at least Dune is out of print and is pricy on the secondary market).

In some instances, they used to add in extra scenes and dialogue etc. to pad the runtime for television. Longer runtime, more ads. Plus they had to make up for the time they'd already edited from the film. Thanks for this, though. I had never heard the narration before. It sounds very, very similar to the actor who says "keep watching the skies" at the end of the original Thing From Another World. I wonder if it is him. If it is, that's kind of cool that they brought him back for that, even if the narration isn't necessary. EDIT: It can't be him as the actor sadly died in 1960. But it definitely sounds like someone trying to impersonate him.

Thanks for sharing this. Never saw the TV cut. I know that they basically cut down the gore and replace the language then they have to pad it out to 85 to 90 minutes by any means necessary. However it affects the story is of no concern to them. If this is someone's first viewing then shame on them. I generally like to watch these alternate cuts because they inevitably will add back in deleted footage like with Airplane and Fast Times. Even the 80s Twilight Zone added back in extra footage when the show went into syndication.

This version is on the Scream Factory Blu-ray. This must have been a 80's edit. Because I used to have a VHS recording from the USA network 90's cut. It has more gore. But cut shorter for tv. For example the shot of the dog thing is cut down to almost a second. The narrator is not in the USA network version. The chest mouth is in full in this version.

I remember watching a TV version in the late 80s with my dad after praising the theatrical version I had seen in 82. I can't recall the details anymore, other than the fact they edited huge chunks of the film out including pivotal scenes (which I think had been done in order to cram in more commercials). Of course this made the film completely incomprehensible. Needless to say my dad always hated the film despite the fact I kept telling him that it was a badly edited version of original full length movie.

In the pan and scan VHS you couldn't see Kurt Russell throw the dynamite either so it wasn't until I saw it on DVD years later that I realised Palmer didn't just explode for some reason.

To me, the opening narration of the 4 characters you showed seems to be like the narrator is reading the character descriptions from a screenplay.

They did not cut Macready throwing the dynamite that blows up Palmer thing. They were simply too lazy to pan from Macready throwing to Palmer. He is cropped out of the frame.

Imagine having the ego to think that you could or should touch one second of this movie. The only person I'd let do that would be the horror master himself. Interesting video.

I actually like the alternate Intro. I wish it were included in a Blu Ray of the Theatrical version, I’ve heard there was a extended Directors cut as well

I just realized I have seen this movie probably over a “million times” I watch it and love showing it to people that have never seen it…. But I’ve never actually watched it on cable Tv…. This is interesting.

The narration makes it sound like a documentary, or a re-enactment.

Take a good look and you’ll see that Universal was where all of the most egregious and bizarre tv cuts come from. Thing, Brazil, Mallrats, etc.

I'd like to see you do a video on the Return of the Living Dead workprint. There's quite a few alternate takes, deleted scenes, and even an alternate ending.

Its not really an alternate ending. the effect shots for alot of the ending weren't done yet so they just used storyboards for the gaps, I don't think they had filmed the dialog of the phone call....Its not all that different as people make it out to sound.....Its also kinda worthless now that a 4k Scream Factory remaster of it comes out in October.

I was fortunate enough to watch the theatrical cut on one of the premium channels at the time, I wanna say Super Channel, but could be incorrect. Television edits can be fun for a laugh as well as a glimpse into censorship standards of the time. The video is entertaining and hella better than reading about the changes made to a film on a website. I loved this short trip down nostalgia street when one had to plan ahead in order to watch a bit of entertainment. Cheers and have a nice day eh.

First time I saw this was on CBS back in the day when it finally made it to network TV. Later on I sought out the uncut version, much better film left intact.

On a related note, in the theatrical version there's the scene in the kitchen where Nauls is listening to "Superstition" by Stevie Wonder on his boom box. But I have a VHS of "The Thing", which isn't the TV version, but the song has been changed to The Four Tops cover of "One Chain (Don't Make No Prison)". Later when I got the DVD, its back to Stevie Wonder again; weird.
