Hi Tony, I'm the guy who wrote the Alien 3 The lesser known deleted scenes article on Scified. I did write an article detailing every little difference between all 3 cuts of Alien 3 which was sadly lost due to blogger bugging out. I only have half a rough draft of it. After watching your video I'm thinking of redoing the article. Anyways, great video and I love Alien 3!

It annoyed me big time as the Alien 3 differences article was quite large with screenshots, images and dialogue transcripts, etc, and took me a long time to write. I might restart it if there is interest for it.

The composite puppet looks good on the fuzzy vhs. 📼

The problem when talking about the Workprint is that for a long time, people casually called the Assembly Cut the "workprint" all the time and it was hard as hell to find the actual one because every search would point you towards the Assembly Cut.

I thought I was the only Alien 3 fan.... I want this

17:38 I have to agree with Fincher here that seeing her think about it and make the decision would have been better. Weaver acted this beautifully, it's like she's thinking about what she's lost and about having her life back. It's like a moment of temptation, but she knows better than to trust the Company.

You clearly have a passion for Alien 3 and it's cool to see you diving so deeply into it.

This is an awesome video, thank you Tony! It is amazing to keep learning about Alien 3 and all the changes it went through. I can only hope a future 4K disc edition will give the film one last push into having a final version that will be the best to own.

I'm waiting for the Hack The Alien 3 cut. Where Tony is trying to chase after Ripley and tell her about the alien in her belly.

I mostly liked Alien 3. Always have. I don't think it's any better than the second one, but it has its moments. Sometime in the near future I'll finally get around to the assembly cut.

This was great. Keep on being awesome Tony.

I love Alien 3. I like elements of the assembly cut and the theatrical cut. I prefer the Alien coming out of the dog. That scene is so much more impactful. But also love the extra scenes with Gollick releasing the Alien. I would love to see an enhanced version with the effects re-done and the best bits of both versions in. That would really improve this flawed masterpiece.

they can't "redo" those effects. they were done with a rod puppet. It was cleaned up in the blu-ray but that's about the best it could look without them CGI jizzing all over the movie.

@@lutherheggs451 I think modern cgi over the rod puppet bits would look great. Or colour correcting it so it doesn't look so jarring. The actual effect of the rod puppet look great. But the colour grading just doesn't sell it.

Luther Heggs they can, they only need to colour correct and add details like slime on top of the rod alien scenes. Today's technology makes everything possible

It’s funny you mentioned you can’t see the little cart being shoved in the final shot, because I always noticed it and wondered if it was optically inserted not realising until now that the close up one was the one that was optically inserted 😂

Great video! I Think I like the assembly cut the most the added scenes really help it out a lot. Elliot Goldenthals music really helps drive home that the world of Fury 161 is just a nasty place.

I love the assembly cut but this was pretty interesting seeing what the workprint had to offer!

I remember reading an article in an obscure scifi magazine ages ago that talked about how the producers ruined this movie, and basically just made part 1 again. One idea I can remember from the article was setting it on a space colony and having the aliens using livestock to reproduce; and the xenomorphs would more resemble the animals rather than a humanoid look to them. Also killing Newt and Hicks right at the beginning made it impossible to try to incorporate the vastly superior comic book version where Newt is a major character. The movie ruined the comic as well, since they tried to keep it in line with the movies. "The line began in 1988 as an immediate continuation of the story after James Cameron's Aliens; the first two comic series (originally titled simply Aliens, later retitled Aliens: Book One and Aliens: Book Two in collected form) featured the characters of Corporal (now promoted to Sergeant) Hicks and Newt as their main protagonists, while the third, Aliens: Earth War, additionally reintroduced Alien-franchise heroine Ellen Ripley. However, following the release of the film Alien3 in 1992, which saw Hicks, Newt and Ripley all perish on Fiorina "Fury" 161, Dark Horse edited the initial Aliens comics in order to keep the events and stories within relevant to the Alien universe. To this end, the names and identities of its key characters were changed - Hicks became Wilks, Newt became Billie and Ripley became a synthetic version of herself. The stories were also retitled in reprint editions to their current names: Aliens: Outbreak, Aliens: Nightmare Asylum and Aliens: Female War."

for over a year I thought the whole Alien 3 thing was an elaborate troll...now here I am waiting for installment 3 of reviewing it. good job Uncle Tony!

Alien 3 will always have a special place in my memories since this was my first introduction to this “saga” of movies

I remember the Dark Horse Comics adaptation had the guy singing “paint it black.” Comic adaptations of movies are so weird because they condense the story, and almost always use a older version of the script.

This was a great little extra video..... ive always been a fan of both versions of Alien3 and didnt know that this extra version existed, so was great to get these extra facts etc

Somewhere amongst all 3 cuts (workprint, theatrical, and assembly) is a movie that would reach iconic status. I love them all but 3 is special and I hope one day David Fincher takes another crack at it.

I LOVE Alien ³. I prefer the assembly cut but I would kill to see the full workprint version! I'm really hoping the rumors are true and we eventually get Aliens, Alien ³, and Resurrection on 4k at some point this year.

If James Cameron is meant to be involved with Aliens, there will NEVER be a 4k release of it.....There hasn't ever even been a proper blu-ray release of True Lies, let alone a 4k of it....

Great work. I like Tony talking about different cuts. Had this cut on VHS & this vid was a nice stroll down memory lane. I prefer apprehensive Ripley before taking the dive. She needs more time to tell herself that the Company's offer will only prolong her suffering or maybe she just wants a few more breathes

You made 3 videos on Alien 3. Good Job, its probably a record

14:55 Funny line but too much like Jaws You're gonna need a bigger boat. The bambi puppet Alien was the worst part of the movie. The chameleon idea I think Vincent Ward had if I recall would've been more interesting. 16:40 I did like that For the Last Time line the way she delivers it. I like the time code and the reel change title screens in the work print shown in your video thumbnail. The Anthology Blu-ray does a good job if you select the theatrical version then a special feature is to branch to the Assembly cut's additional scenes. Your video is helpful. It's been a long time since I saw the workprint. An imdb entry does a concise job of noting the differences as you did and also The Blu-ray edition of the Assembly Cut of "Alien 3" (available as part of the 'Alien Anthology' box set or as separate edition) received additional work on the soundtrack. As a result, it features re-recorded dialogue that replaces the poor quality audio that appeared in many of the added scenes in the DVD version. Additionally, dialogue has been added to a few scenes that had none in the DVD version: • As the prisoners are dragging the EEV out of the ocean, they can be heard talking to each other and coordinating their efforts (dialogue was lifted from the theatrical version). • When prisoner Murphy is scrubbing the air duct and finds something moving inside a hole, he can be heard calling his dog Spike (dialogue was lifted from the theatrical version). • After prisoner Junior has lured the alien inside the toxic waste disposal unit and the other prisoners have closed the door, muffled screams and shouts are heard, interspersed with disturbing thuds and ripping sounds, which eventually die down as the others listen in.

On the DVD they talked about the nute autopsy. The prop of the dead little girl was really scary and some people basically couldn't even look at it, everyone thought it was too graphic for the movie Similar to pet cemetery, a very realistic doll was made to look like the little boy, and it really freaked people, One person like passed out from frear after seeing it in a coffin lolz

The whole Golic subplot was mostly cut because the writers thought it made the Alien less menacing.

You know as long and hard as Tony is fought to review Alien 3 I'm not surprised he reviewed this one too keep up the good work

I think this is the best video you have ever made I might be biased but my shout out was the best part lol

for me, while the Assembly Cut is the much superior version of the movie, I still feel like some stuff from the Theatrical Cut was done better!!! for example, I feel like the funeral sequence in the Theatrical Cut was better, because people sympathize with an animal (in this case, a dog) that's whimpering in pain, as it's about to give birth to the Runner Alien that we see in the final version of the film. as there's alot of animal caretakers out there, especially those who own dogs. and some will make a decent argument, that the Queen bursting out of Ripley's chest during her self-sacrifice was done better as well, as it doesn't abruptly end the sequence. not to mention, Elliot Goldenthal's music score was nicely composed and one of the saddest moments in the film (next to the funeral scene at the very beginning of the movie)

You can tell the cart was composited it since the lighting and shadows are not accurate, though you have to have quite a bit of training to realize it is not just the janky CGI alien throwing that scene off. Also, the prisoner is singing the Project Pitchfork version of In the Year 2525, for those that want to find it.

Thats not a CGI alien. Its a rod puppet. The only CGI effect in the movie is the one shot at the end when the alien is cracking.

Really liked this new video review of the workprint, Tony. Please do the TV cut of the original Superman the Movie. Its over 3 hours long and officially available on blu-ray now.

Alien 3 is my absolute favorite in the series.

I met jude years ago, he was also in a episode of auf wiedersehen pet with fellow alien 3 star Christopher fairbanks

Test audiences were disgusted by Newt's autopsy and the Alien birth scene. Both scenes were completely reworked. A test screening with Fox executives had the same results.

dang Tony, i've always said i prefer 4 over 3, but your constant videos have almost changed my mind. lol, next your gonna make me actually like Jurassic Park 3 more than 2 (yeah right!)

Or you just watch the assembly cut and actually see a full finished version of the film with finished effects and a score instead of watching a 240p VHS tape with no music and a time stamp on the bottom of the frame.... There is a workprint of Return of the Living Dead that I would NEVER recommend anybody ever watch as some sort of version of the film since it also doesn't have a score, its missing some effect shots, has a time stamp on the bottom of the screen, looks like a 240p VHS tape and the entire ending of the film is pictures of storyboards.

Is there somewhere that we can get this?? I want this as part of my collection. Even though Gibson’s Alien 3 novel is my Alien 3 w/the assembly cut as an “alternative universe”.

I'm also a bigfan of Alien 3. It has its flaws, especially in the editing, but the highlights overshadow the weak points. And to me, the story ends there on a perfect note. The other filmes are non canonica.

My understanding of the autopsy scene was that literally every single person who saw it, said it wayyyyyyyyyy too graphic. My question though is why it was even included in the script? If you ask me, what's in the theatrical cut is too much as it is (any we don't see anything but Ripley's reaction). I know we need to see Ripley's reaction to Newt's death, but that feels mean spirited and in poor taste. And yeah I know the point is to look for eggs/chestbuster, but you could accomplish the same purpose in a different way.

Is this just a rare Thursday video? Or will you be doing them every Thursday again?

Alien 3 has the same problems for me regardless of the cut, but the production story is great. Newt uncut autopsy is the only deleted footage I want to see. Heard about it first on MonsterVision. We have a full assembly cut, so where the fuck is it?

I think people need to stop crying about how sequels never take chances and do the same thing over and over again...Meanwhile Alien 3 did take a massive chance besides making it part of the overall narrative that the Alien was going to continue taking everything from Ripley.... They literally did the least expected thing and people still constantly complain about it....Not everything needs to end with people holding hands and skipping off into the sunset.
