2:06 Ennio Morricone did the iconic soundtrack for The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly. It’s an incredibly atmospheric and emotive soundtrack that takes a fantastic movie and launches into the stratosphere. As an orchestral musician you *must* watch that one.

This is my go to horror flick, and just smart all around. Yes, there are a few nitpicks, but nothing is perfect. The dog revealing all is probably one of the craziest turns I’ve seen.

I think it is worthy of a go-to for the genre. I certainly don't mind the little imperfections -- I think it's more just fun to find them ;) And I agree on the dog moment -- BOOM! This is happening. lol Thanks for watching along!

One of the top 5 horror films ever done to me, and many. Proof great practical effects will always beat CGI. Carpenter (one of the most underrated directors of all time) said he knows how to do 2 horror stories. (1) The evil is out THERE somewhere, the other (2) is the evil is among us. I agree with him in that second take being far more terrifying. I also recommend from Carpenter Starman (his non horror flick) Christine (horror) In the Mouth of Madness (horror) Halloween 1978 movie (horror) and Escape from New York. Was a treat to see you enjoy it. Thank you and your subscribers for picking this amazing film

The Summer of '82 was a big one foe movies, especially sci-fi. There was this, E.T, Tron, Blade Runner and Star Trek II. This is the only film that made me flinch, during the dog/thing transformation., Of the several Carpenter-Russell film team-ups, you might really enjoy their first. The TV movie "Elvis" from the late '70's, Russell; played the King. It's known for being one of the better Elvis biopics. it's hard to believe that Brimley was only in his 40's when he did this and "Cocoon". There was a prequel in 2011 that didn't do so well, critically or at the B.O. Also, check out the original, from 1951 "The Thing from Another World".

This story began life as a 1938 novella called "Who Goes There?" It was made into a 1951 movie called "The Thing From Another World." No one on KZread has ever reacted to it, which is sad because it's an excellent film. Carpenter was a big fan and remade it as this movie. When this was made, CGI existed in a very primitive way, but was not widely available, so was not used for this film. This film is considered to be the absolute pinnacle of practical effects. In 2011, a prequel, also called "The Thing" was made to show what had happened at the Norwegian camp. I like it but the die hard fans of this version treat it with contempt because it "copped out" and used CGI. By the way, the KZread reactor Centane, who lives in Norway, says that the Norwegian guy from the helicopter at the beginning who's trying to kill the dog is yelling (as best I remember), "It's not a dog. It's some kind of thing."

Great reaction Christina! haha I always get a kick when someone says "I'm not really a fan of horror movies" because often they're the channels with the best, most genuine reactions as a result. The Thing is a classic, I hope you watch Child's Play, great movie do you have a fear of creepy dolls? hehe. I'm just getting over food poisoning so this video cheers me up.😊 Yes there is a prequel to this that kind of felt like a remake called The Thing(2011) some didn't like it but it explains what happened before this movie. Also, now I know who you remind me of, Kim Cattrall from Mannequin and Sex in the City!😉

Most of people Who hates the thing (2011) because of CGI and that movie doesn't felt like old movie. They focused too much on action and lack of pschologycal horror. I'm okey with that movie, not bad but not good either. They should hired a better director

@@boboboy8189Yeah, aside from those reasons some others also hated it due to it emulating this movie in certain ways in certain scenes but I was fine with it, I saw them as more of an easter egg to certain parts of this movie but yeah I felt it was alright as well. It's not the best or the worst I agree but I do think it got a little too much hate imo.

See the thing *can only immitate living cells.* Norris has a prosthetic heart valve, which was not "copied" so the copy became was extremely prone to heart attacks. Note that this also gives other clues like for instance Childs' earring, which can't be copied.

You have to realize that this movie came out long before CGI so there was some very creative practical effects showcased here. 4. Mac's not a murderer. Clark was attacking him with the scalpel. It was self defense. 5. Of everything that went down the part that got me the most was when Blair was dragging Gary by the face. 6. Their fate is left arbitrary on purpose. Maybe it's best they all die. 7. They're re-making this sans Carpenter and Russell. 8. Another Russell/Carpenter product you need to first time/share with us is "Escape from New York".

Hello there, that was a very nice viewing and reaction to watch with you. And I saw your cat. Cute! Tell me, in the dog transformation scene, something came out of the thing, and tried to escape through the ceiling. When Childs torched it, many say he pointed it upwards a bit and got the thing that was trying to get out as well as the dog-thing on the ground. But I think when he pointed the flamethrower upwards, he was hitting the tentacle/mouth thing that came out of the creature on the ground, and the other part escaped. What do you think? Or anybody?

Thanks! The kitty was definitely trying to steal the show for this video LOL That thing in the dog kennel really kept expanding and it seemed to catch fire pretty quickly and then they put it out pretty quickly. Something could have escaped. I think I was too scared to look lol

There is a prequel that shows what happened at the Norwegian camp before this movie. It's also called The Thing, and was made in 2011.

You are right -- I do have a patron request coming up that is not horror, but hopefully we can get some more Halloween comedy worked in at least for next year! I'll add Young Frankenstein to the main watchlist.

4:30 "That might have been a little excessive. Not like you can go out and buy another computer." Nah, he'll just run down to the local Antarctica WalMart and get a new one... :) You're right, that was pretty dumb. Now he's gonna have to read books all winter... I think this is trying to establish this character as a guy who doesn't give a sh!t about anything. Side note: I used to play that game in 1983-1985 when I got a better one. It's not "Chess Wizard", it's "Sargon Chess". It didn't cheat. Today I teach chess and have about 70 students. Old Sargon had something to do with that.

I mentioned in another comment that I don't know much about chess (though I believe I would enjoy it if I took the time), so that detail was lost on me. But it is intriguing that apparently it is a point of argument out there on the internets. I run across similar issues having to do with music or instrument playing.

That went better than I thought it would go, I was giving even odds if you'd make it past the dogs. I'm not a big horror fan either, I find most of them boring, but the ones with a well written story can be truly memorable. Oh and by the way... Hitting a moving target from a moving helicopter isn't like shooting fish in a barrel ;) Stay OK

Absolutely no way that Childs or Mac would swap spit under the circumstances. The sharing of the bottle is extremely sketchy to me. I used to think that Mac made it out and Childs was the thing. The more I watch that final scene, the more I just don't know if either of them were human. Would a thing not recognize another thing tho?

I don't think this movie could be effective with more modern special effects, they tried with the 2011 prequel and it was blasted for replacing the more realistic practical fx with cgi overlay. The creature fx here, especially the dog scene, are amazing even today, and have 'substance' and none of the 'uncanny valley' that cgi has. Can spot cgi a mile off. If Blumhouse ever get their act together and properly get the ball rolling on their 'Frozen Hell' remake (the original story that The Thing came from) then I only hope its using top-notch practical from a MODERN practical fx master, but alas I fear it will be 'bad inertia/over blurry when in motion/over-lit over-saturated and going waaaaaaaay too far cgi fx extravaganza.

I recently heard a discussion on a podcast about how movies should use both cgi and practical FX. Why try to just use one OR the other? Some scenes are better for on than the other. Just the sheer amount of goo that was used in this movie was enough to make me grossed out. That wouldn't be the same for cgi goo.

Its worth watching 'the thing from another world' from 1951 for comparison with carpenter's version, you can see the parts he kept and its a decent movie for 50's sci fi. If a little dated. The Thing is probably my second favorite carpenter movie after 'Escape from NY'. I wish they had kept the original scripted ending when Macready asks Child's if he knows how to play chess.

Carpenter was inspired by the 50s movie, but was really trying to be more true to original science fiction story, "Who Goes There?", that the 50s movie only just barely paid lip service to.

Yes -- cartoonish is a good description. But I'm not going to hold TOO much against it. They obviously put all of their effort into the FX of the crashed ship and the goopy Thing itself. And also... I LOVE ELO. I fell in love with that band when I was 15. Discovery is my fave album. :)

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. I'm kinda sad that you blurred out nearly everything that makes this movie memorable. I assume you're trying to avoid having KZread take it down or demonetize it. I've seen dozens of other reactors leave nearly all of that in and their videos have been up for years. I dunno anything about making a reaction video, maybe it's better safe than sorry. You do you. But also, if the people watching you can't see the best parts of the movie, it's a bit of a disappointment for us - even more so when we can't see the horror in the horror movie.

  • @okchristina

Yeah, I definitely am having to lean to the blurry side of the fence, but I am trying to limit it and at least leave it visible around the edges so memory has a chance to fill some things in. This was one of the first true horror movies on the channel so I will keep trying to get the right balance in the future. The standards for language and violence on KZread have changed quite a bit. I've seen entire channels come crashing down because of one issue like this they had existing throughout most of their videos that suddenly was a no-no. Yikes. Hang in there with us. :)
