*The Thing is a cellular life form. Each of its cells absorbs (eats) the cells of an animal and in the process imitates the cell it just ate.* When it's done, it looks like the animal it ate. The animal (or person) it eats no longer exists.

Fun Facts: - Actors Keith David[Childs] and Kurt Russell [MacReady] have both stated for the fan questions and interviews that both of them weren’t the thing/alien creature - Kurt Russell debunked the fans theories about child’s being the alien, Kurt shook his head “no” and says “that him and John Carpenter have worked on the ending of that movie together a long time,” because it was a horror movie -- but to see what the movie was about, which was paranoia, they didn't know if they knew who they were.” - John Carpenter even said the video game was canon to the movie and Childs was human, and in the comics Both Child’s and MacReady were human and fought the alien creature in 3 comic issues, they were actually saved by a rescue team and continued to fight [The Thing].

I always used to think that a clear indication of Childs being the thing is him willingly swigging the booze that was in MacReady's mouth only seconds earlier. I wondered if MacReady was testing him. But the writing's so good, as Childs is the kind of erratic guy who might drink it without thinking.

Ladies, if a movie makes you talk about it for a long time after it's over, it means that the movie got you. Also, there are lots of details to take into account, for example Childs' coat, it is blue when Macready's group goes to see Blair and then it is almost white in the final scene. Finally, you are both beautiful, but seeing your faces when Norris's stomach opened was a delight.

19:01 - you can hear Windows drop the keys that he got from Garry (they mention this earlier in that same scene how Windows has to get the keys back to Garry). The same keys that the thing uses to get to the blood later on. It also explains why Windows panics and runs for the shotgun when everyone is accusing everyone about who had the keys last, because he realizes that eventually people will figure out he had the keys last. I love the subtle touches in this movie.

  • @tranya327

    @tranya327

Windows may have had the keys last, but that may or may not be why he ran to the gun cabinet. It's true that Windows dropped the keys - in terror, when he walked in on an assimilation, but then he immediately went and got help, then was with everyone else while Bennings was burned. Equally plausible explanation: Windows was just innately more terrified and more distrustful than the others, and rightly so: Windows is fairly low in the social hierarchy there, to begin with: Gary momentarily tortures Windows by turning up his headphone volume - he didn't have to do that. Blair speaks harshly to Windows about not being able to reach outside help, when that's likely beyond Windows's control. Palmer-Thing picks on Windows, but is acting like Palmer, so it's plausible that the real Palmer also would have. Windows wears sunglasses indoors, indicating a desire to escape/isolate/tune out. Windows started off feeling that no one had his back, even before the creature appeared, and that vulnerability was dialed up to eleven during the 'someone got to the blood!' moment.

MacReady is unarmed and exhausted. As I said, I do not think Thing wants to assimilate MacReady and I think the same is true for Fuchs, I think Blair Thing burned Fuchs or Fuchs accidentally set himself on fire during confrontation. Mac being useless, the Thing strategy would either be do NOT make contact and go to sleep on other side of camp, and if it makes Contact which Childs does, just throw flaming nepalm out if it, Mac is too much a risk and wild card to either not see him on fire and not making contact at all. Since this is last Thing, I do not think it would risk incineration from MacReady. I think Childs and MacReady are both human and are both about to freeze to death.

40:41 It took me a couple of times watching this to realize that sure The Thing is a monster to us. But it’s actually an intelligent being or it can absorb intelligence from the various beings it mimics. When it turns all monstrous like this I think it’s partly because it’s in the middle of transforming. But I also think it is trying to scare the crap out of the people at the base. Being terrifying is can be an effective survival tool as it definitely makes other lifeforms stay the heck away. The 2011 movie is a prequel to this movie. In it you get to see what happened at the Norwegian base before the American base. Also I could have sworn I saw a version of this movie in which after the credits we see another snow dog running away from the American base. It stops looks back at the burning base and continues on.

You are correct - the dog running away scene was an old edit for broadcast TV in the 80's. That version cut most of the gore and incorporated the use of narration at the beginning and end. After the final scene with MacReady and Childs it cuts to daylight with smoke rising above the camp as a huskie runs away with a final VO: "Who knows what has come from the galaxy? Who knows what evil lurks in the skies beyond God? Watch those around you for who knows what today, tonight or tomorrow will bring."

Not only is your x and y coordinates constantly shifting, you have the z axis + gravity/bullet drop and windage. Add to that the slitted goggles AND that the guy shooting was not a shooter, but a norwegian scientists/handy man. That rifle was probably not even sighted in. The only gripe i have is the grenade scene. Like I get it, its snowy and icy and everything is slippery, you're on adrenaline and operating on very little sleep. All carpenter movies should be watched! Specially Assault on precinct 13, escape from New York, escape from LA, Starman, Big Trouble in little CHINA, they Live, The Fog, Eyes of Laura Mars, Prince of Darkness, and others. Carpenter resented Spielberg for ET AND it took all the money and awards. But Carpenter had the last laugh! Because this movie is much better! Carpenter made his own alien love story with Starman! Carpenter also is the master of the minimalist creepy theme music! Kurt did 4 movies with carpenter! He even did an early TV Elvis movie, for John! This is one of the 3 most important sci-fi movies ever made. Plus Alien and Bladerunner, which are all related, by actors, and some other technicalities. Also the brilliance here is, when the thing busts out, it comes out of u anywhere, any size, shape, etc. The dog trainer should have won an Oscar and the special effects guy should have won an Oscar! He was a twenty one year old college student!😮😮😮. Pro tip, carpenter is still thinking about a sequel! But there's still a massive tie in here with Alien, predator Bladerunner this , and a movie with Kurt Russell called, Soldier! They are related by the beings called Engineers, for Aliens, Terminator, predator, Bladerunner this, and a movie with Kurt Russell movie called, Soldier. Common companies, technology, Replicants, synthetic humans, beings that Engineers created, and even writers and producers! And this is why, prosthetic, robotics, special/ effects, practical effects, are way better than CGI! The three main corporations... Cyberdyne (Terminator) Weyland Corp (alien) and Tyrell Corp (Bladerunner) all did cross work for each other, and also shared some employees!😮 Kurt better have kept the hat! Also the total brilliance here is, once u have been infected, even from just a scratch, u have no idea when u are being taken over! One of the absolute must watch Carpenter films u must watch! Along with Starman, escape from New York, escape from LA, Big Trouble in little CHINA, assault on precinct 13. Go with those, and his Halloween stuff, Eyes of Laura Mars, They Live, The Fog, Christine, In the mouth of madness, prince of darkness, memoirs of an invisible man, vampires! There are critics who say this is Carpenter's version of Communism Socialism, etc , and how it takes over countries, much as a film in the 50s by the same name, i think...

In an interview I saw recently, John Carpenter pointed out that the computer animation of the cells was incorrect and misleading. In it we see The Thing cell consuming a host cell… but if it is a creature that mimics other organisms it would have consumed it and then SPLIT in two in order to REPLICATE the cell. So that was a good call on your part for noticing that small technical goof that goes unnoticed by just about everyone who’s not a microbiologist. 🤓👍

An excellent film. The template for “The Thing” is highly recommended. The name of this film is "The Thing from Another World" by Howard Hawks b/w from 1951. The focus here is not mainly on special effects but on the question "what is this thing". An extraordinary film for its time. By the way, the lady on the right (Ryl?) was one of the very few people who asked herself very, very early on whether the dog was really just a dog. The 2011 film is set in the Norwegian camp when the Norwegians "free" the spaceship and "The Thing" from the ice, unknowingly setting the catastrophe in motion. The end of the film is the escape of "The Thing" in dog form towards the US research station and the pursuit by the helicopter. The Norwegian camp is in ruins at this point.

With the Palmer-thing, it was exposed thanks to the blood test, so it knew it will be killed. The dog in the beginning did it queitly with the man who was in the room (the shadow). It was quiet with Garry. As long as it can, it does it quietly.

Like people do all the time with The Shining. There was no indication whatsoever that the infection was in the food. As a matter of fact, Fuchs even suggested IN THE MOVIE to only eat out of cans and to make your own meals. Forgot about that? The movie literally SUGGESTS that the food cannot be contaminated.

Blair was infected right in front of your faces. During the autopsy he touched the thing with a pencil. Then he absent mindedly touched the pencil eraser to his lips. A few cells got in. He was human until some point after they locked him up outside. He was going to hang himself but it replicated enough to take him over by the last time Mac talked to him. It can take you over in two forms. A few cells at a time or the more aggressive when it's a large mass. It just grabs you and absorbs the person's body which still take at least a few minutes.

  • @YokaiSteve

That was already debunked by other youtubers, Blair never touches the thing with the pencil just gets very close to it. Go watch the videos, his infection isn't until he's brought food by Palmer (who by then was already a thing) etc when he's already locked away. Learn your movies buddy.

There's a lot of uncertainty as to when different people were infected, and taken over. For instance: when Blair wrecks the chopper, the tractor and the radio room - are those the actions of the real Blair, who is semi-crazy, but still heroically acting to ••prevent an escape•• by the others, and prevent a contamination of the rest of the world? Or, are these the actions of Blair-Thing, who is acting to ••prevent a WARNING•• from reaching the outside world, so that rescue teams or military strikes won't interfere with it when it's time to move on to new targets? Was human-Blair merely 'out of it' when they locked him in the tool shed? Or, was it already Blair-Thing, who ••acted•• crazy so that the others would lock him in the tool shed, and then leave him alone so that he could tunnel out and work on the escape craft? ...Did the dog-thing infect Norris first, who then infected Palmer? Or was it the other way around?

One of the most common questions people have is whether a Thing knows it's a Thing. The answer is yes, because it doesn't infect people or inhabit their body, it essentially just eats them and forms its own cells to mimic them. During the process it must be able to absorb their memories so that it knows everything they knew, that's why it's impossible to tell if someone's been replaced just by observing behavior.

37:44 almost no other reactor gets this! The Thing has dozens, if not hundreds of forms. It's not unreasonable to think it has one that can burrow or melt ice, and that it has one that can rapidly construct items. A cool bit of foreshadowing that everyone misses is the pinball machine in the rec room. It's called Heat Wave. There's a thermometer on the rear display, the idea of play is to score points to raise the temperature of the thermometer, when it reaches the top, it blows up. You kinda have to be a pinball fanatic to get it though.

Loved your reaction,..at the end, when Blair transforms,..and its the dogs, and him,..remember when he was doing the autopsy of the dog/thing carcass,..he while he was explaining what had happened, maybe absent-mindedly after touching his eraser pencil to the carcass and then touching his bottom lip with the same eraser pencil,..that's when he contracted, remember it just takes some small amount, few cells,..the dog DNA was on that eraser,..maybe thats why it looked the way it did when it came down to Blair,..knew when it came to the Doc getting his arms chewed off while doing cpr, that that would be pretty shocking for you, and yeah dont think Norris knew he was a thing, its like when we get the flu, or something, it infects like a disease,,..but I think Palmer knew he was a thing,..it's that shrug, and goofy look he has when they're about to test the blood, like, "oh well, the jig.is up, they're gonna find out its me", you know, it wasn't that guilty look windows had, and he was in the clear!,..so glad you watched this incredible movie,..and yes the paranoia was the premise,..it's just not the type of paranoia you'd have about a normal human killer,..few movies, just for the mystery of it,..Eye See You, Whiteout, and an old one, 10 Little Indians,..all with people trapped in an isolated place with a human killer on the loose,..the first has Sylvester Stallone in it,..for another who's human, who's not, The Hidden is a good one,..lot of action, and funny,..Bad Moon has a dog in it, protecting a family from something horrible,..do keep going,..ya'll are awesome,..Godspeed, Peace ✌

The end is designed to feed the audience's paranoia, and does so perfectly. The film itself is about paranoia and not knowing, and the audience ourselves/themselves are also feeling the same paranoia throughout the film. The audience are each effectively a character of the film, not able to act in it but we are experiencing exactly what the film's characters are in their heads. With the ending you carry that feeling with you and it leaves you pondering the outcome, and here we are over 40 years later still talking about it and debating it. Thanks for the video.
