The Thermocline Can Help You Catch More Bass in the Summer | Using the Thermocline to Catch Bass

Спорт

If you are having a hard time getting bites in the summer, you may be fishing below the thermocline. Understanding how it forms and where to locate it can increase the number of bass you catch in the mid-to-late summer months.

Most clearly defined explanation of the thermocline on the internet. Equally clear was the explanation on how and why it effects fishing. Thank you, Steve for your taking the time to articulate this topic.

I agree. It's been a time thing lately. My schedule has been so crazy I am having a hard time getting on the water for extended periods. Like today, I have to film six episodes because I have to be on the road for almost two full weeks. Ugh.

Hey Steve, just wanted to say I love the content on your channel. I used to enjoy your columns in the Morris Daily Herald back in the day, I think it was you anyways. I've been fishing at CECO a lot lately and your videos have been right on the money. Thanks again for the good info!

Hi Brian, Thank so much! I did write for the paper since 2006. Once COVID hit, they put a freeze on freelance articles - I hope they restart soon. I love CECO. Haven't been out there in years.

Great explanation of the thermocline and how we can use it to our advantage Steve. Don’t wait too long for that video on turn over. I’m in SE Michigan and you never know when the snow will start to fly 😄

For sure. I remember it first snowed on my son's birthday in early October last year. It will be here before we know it.

I was always taught that in the heat of summer, during the hottest part of the day, the fish go way out into deep water and hang out on the bottom because the water is so much cooler down there. So you have to fish the bottom out in the middle of the lake (if you can stand the sun. ) Is this a valid idea in bodies of water where there is no thermocline? (Obviously, if there is a thermocline, the fish won't be down there because there is no oxygen) P. S. This is by far the most easy-to-understand lesson on thermocline I have ever seen. Your slow, gentle presentation is just fantastic.

Thank you! Yes, if the water you are fishing does not form a thermocline, they definitely can be in some cooler deep areas. If your not seeing much life shallow then it almost certain they are out there and even possibly suspended.

Ok what about people that don't have a boat at all? Especially not any of the electronics that you speak of. I am a bank angler because i can't afford a boat right now and am trying to improve my fish catching game but is hard when a lot of people talk about boats. What do us bank anglers do?

That is an excellent question! If you are fishing water that is pretty clear and has some depth to it, it is probably safe to assume that you will definitely be fishing above the thermocline when fishing from the shore. For example, I was out yesterday on a lake and checking temperatures at various depths. The surface was 82 and at twenty feet, the water was still 80. The thermocline on this lake is still below that right now. In the past I have also used a small thermometer ( I believe it was one used in aquariums?) and attached it to a string, tossed it out, let it sit and check various temperatures that way. Did this a lot before I had a boat as well. Another great strategy for fishing from the shore is to target the depth where the light penetration starts to fall off. This transition line is often well within casting distance of the shore and holds better quality fish. I hope some of this helps. Thanks again for taking the time to write!
