The Theme Park History of ET Adventure (Universal Studios Florida/Hollywood/Japan)

Ойын-сауық

The ET Adventure is a dark ride featured at Universal Studios Florida, and formerly, Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Studios Japan theme parks. The ride is based on the movie ET: the Extra-Terrestrial. As the only opening day attraction remaining at Universal Studios Florida, guests take a bike and help ET get home to save his dying planet. In this video, we take a look at the history of the attraction, Steven Spielberg’s relationship with Universal Theme Parks, the closure of the Hollywood and Japanese version, and the future of the Florida attraction.

I'm hoping for some type of refurbishment for the 30th anniversary of the attraction, not much has to been done to the ride it's (animatronic upgrades, new special effects) I just hope they don't add anything like screens, that would ruin the experience.

I actually would rather see it stay as is, the crowds it get prob doesn't justify a revamp, but, for me that adds to the charm of it. We grew up with this movie, it's a classic 80s flick, so let it keep the charm of its age. I love the animotronica, especially the cop with the 80s style Ronnie who pops out with the police car 👮🚨😂

Whatever is going to come to the kidzone, whether it's going to be Super Nintendo Land or Pokemon, rumors state that ET isn't going to closed or replaced. Instead, a new entrance for the attraction will be created instead. I really don't how people would react to the news if they close ET, I imagine there would be a lot of angry hashtags and petitions going around to save it.

Theme Park History I would find that ironic. ET is the only ride in Universal that always has a 5 minute wait time. I never see anyone go to it. It’s always skipped. Which is why universal wanted to remove but Spielberg threatened them. Personally I think they either remove or at least update the poor ride. The animatronics barely function and it’s age is really obvious to new comers of the park.

As much as I love Universal they have forgotten the power of nostalgia. It forgets that people have been coming to these parks for years hoping to pass that tradition on to their families. Sad that Universal has killed off all of its original rides.

  • @ThemeParkHistory

Nostalgia is very important for the success of a theme park but I understand why Universal made the decision to close the original attractions: it's a business for them and in order to keep bringing guests into the parks they need to keep building new and exciting attractions. My biggest gripe isn't the closings, it's what has replaced them. When Disney closes a attraction, whatever replaces it is usually just as good or better (except Journey Into Your Imagination). Universal though just uses the same ride layouts, focusing heavily on motion simulator, 3D and screens. I'm a huge fan of Universal, been going to the parks since 94 but these days I'm not as eager to visit them because of this. I'm much more interested to see what Disney has in store these days, as there's been more variety in the newer attractions they've opened.

I adore this ride. Anything that makes me feel a PART of the film, is better than something that just assaults my senses into overload. The line-up area for this is almost as special as the ride. That pine smell, the sounds and just the overall feeling of being a part of the movie. I hope it survives long enough to get my kids into it.

In my opinion it's the best attraction Universal has ever built. You could tell Spielberg and the team really put a lot effort to making this a fully immersive experience. The forest queue is grained into my memories: the NASA scientists, the speak and spell, Botanicus arriving and like you mentioned that pine smell. I'm right there with you hoping the attraction sticks around but with Comcast I always feel it's days can be numbered.

It's a toss-up for me between Jaws, this and Kong. The lineup for Kong is just incredible for it's mood. I love them all. Disney could have taken a lesson from these rides when they made "Dinosaur", which was one of the most needlessly violent (in movement) rides I've been on. My son melted down and I was just angry that they could have made something special with it...

  • @ThemeParkHistory

I always have a hard time between Kong and Jaws: Kong was a great experience and the animatronics were the best at the time, while the atmosphere for Jaws was pretty terrifying (even though I knew the sharks were fake and the water wasn't deep, there was always this sense of dread if something went wrong.) You would have figured they would have been able to get the movement ride on the Dinosaur ride, it uses the same technology that Indiana Jones does. It's another of the those Disney rides that have a great concept but the execution is mediocre at best.

That's the problem with modern Universal rides, not only are they all 3D screens, but they have so much going on they just assault your senses. Good ride design should be slower so you can take in the scenes and what is going on. That's why classic rides are so popular and cherished.

Questions for the ride: •Why does E.T. need our help to get back home? Didn't he go home at the end of the movie? •Why are the scientist's searching for E.T. wearing astronaut suits when they are on Earth? •Why are they searching for E.T. using a metal detector?

-E.T. really liked Reese's Pieces so he came back to Earth, spent all his money on candy and couldn't afford an Uber back to the green planet. -The scientists wanted to prove that anyone could pull off wearing a astronaut suit, even though it make their movements very limited and slow. -They were using metal detectors because......ET likes heavy metal music? If anyone has to ask why the scientists are wearing astronaut suits, I have to ask... "Did you even watch the movie?". .-. FYI, they are wearing those suits as a way of avoiding contamination that's more spacey than a HAZMAT. You didn't see them invading Elliott's house in those in the film?! About the other two, though... If you read the books, the metal detectors are being used in order to find any nearby metallic alien artifacts. In fact, I think one officer was using one in the hopes of finding the Great Ornament (E.T.'s ship). As for the other questions, I think Theme Park History had a pretty good explanation. There'd be nowhere else in the galaxy that E.T. could find a manufacturer of his favorite sustenance. HOWEVER... His crew of herbologists travels to Earth each time there is a new evolution or mutation in the plant life, too. So even though the technology mainly looks the same as it was in the movie (the cop cars, the bikes, etc), it might have been just the slightest bit intended for us to understand that we have arrived to take E.T. home a few decades after his adventure on Earth because he has once again played the part of the mindless professor and forgot to get back to his crew in time.

Something else that I found out after this video came out is closing ET could be a way for Universal to push Spielberg out of his creative consultant contract. Basically Universal in theory could be able to void the agreement if they state that the attractions Spielberg worked on (BTTF/JAWS/ET) are no longer at the park. I doubt Universal would want to do something as slimy as that but I wouldn't be surprised if Comcast might.

My friends and I just came back from Universal Studios Orlando last night, I personally hadn't been to the parks in about 20 years. Honestly the ET ride was one of the few things that I genuinely enjoyed, you could tell so much care and love and attention was put into the ride, both the queue and the ride itself. It's a shame that it's starting to show it's age (due to a lack of upkeep) and some of the Green Planet sections were quite the strange choice but it makes it MEMORABLE. No I do NOT know why there's a giant mushroom with a deep silly voice but I'll remember that moreso than the other 'screen ride that sprays water at you sometimes' rides.

I think most fans are just worried with the track record Universal has had recently where it's all about how they can bring in more guests and drive up attendance levels. Disney's old rides feature characters that have a lot more pop culture relevance than ET. Little kids know who Snow White is, but not ET. Doesn't hurt that the Disney rides mostly feature timeless fairytale characters who exist beyond their movies anyway. Not saying this ride should close or anything, but it's a pretty different situation than the dark rides at Disneyland.
