Carol decides to accept Melvin's help and insists on giving him a thank you note.
Watch As Good As It Gets Now: AAN.SonyPictures.com/AsGoodAsI...
Jack Nicholson, Helen Hunt, Greg Kinnear and Cuba Gooding, Jr., star in James L. Brooks' hit comedy, AS GOOD AS IT GETS. Nicholson gives a show-stopping performance as Melvin Udall, an obsessive-compulsive novelist with Manhattan's meanest mouth. But when his neighbor Simon is hospitalized, Melvin is forced to babysit Simon's dog. And that unexpected act of kindness, along with waitress Carol Connelly, helps put Melvin back in the human race.

Helen Hunt is without doubt an exceptional actress, particularly here in this role - she cemented her place amongst Hollywood's top actresses with an exceptionally nuanced and sensitive performance. Her eyes without saying a single word, just illuminated her feelings and thoughts so poignantly throughout her Oscar-winning performance - Helen is an underrated tour-de-force who stood head and shoulders with Nicholson.

After Melvin states that Carol go on the trip, the accommodations - separate everything, hotel rooms, and that she's got to chaperone him and Simon - even after all those conditions the only thing she remembers is: "The stiff one-eye?". That's what it's like to be in Melvin Udall's world. It's no wonder she is frightened to ask him: "What?" Helen Hunt performs her role impeccably. She really earned her Oscar. The script for this movie step-by-step builds to this moment.

Nobody mentions it but I love the last bit there "Are you saying accepting your help obligates me?" "Is there any other way to see it?" "... no..." You can see in that moment, Carol stopped focusing on Melvin's flaws and took a little peek at herself saying, "The fact that you have changed my family's life for the better doesn't obligate me in the least" and she couldn't stand by it. Woman of integrity. It also speaks a little bit to the nature of Autism. People find that the way Autists think and act is a bit transactional and straightforward, but sometimes an honest transaction is way easier and better than insincere lipservice BSing. I think in this moment, she thought about Melvin and his flaws and could see the very flawed man before her... one of his flaws is NOT dishonesty. In fact, honesty is probably his most defining flaw... and knowing that Melvin is an INAPPROPRIATELY honest person (from personal experience) actually puts her at ease in a way. She knows that despite the strangeness of the request there's no ulterior motives. Another sidenote, you'll notice that a lot of the most impactful events in this story are transactions. The doctor, while it made everyone feel warm inside... was a transaction. Caring for the dog... was a transaction. The cross-country trip (for both Melvin and Carol) was a transaction. And you'll notice... the compliment was a transaction. Carol applied leverage and said she needs a compliment (something that isn't particularly normal to demand) and she got one in return. Under normal circumstances, when you demand a compliment, it tends to invalidate the compliment, but oddly, with a person like Melvin, it accentuates it. Coming from him, you know that a compliment like that has been mulling around in his mind for some time, and he's not even really sugar-coating it. You can tell Melvin is bursting at the seams with these wonderful thoughts about her, but he just doesn't discuss his own feelings. I don't doubt for a moment that when he said, "Perhaps I overshot... I was going for just enough to keep you from leaving" he was being a bit cheeky... but that's probably the truth. The whole movie is about transactions and compromise and the healing power of doing right by those you owe something to.

That's what is so amazing about this movie--it's like you're a fly on the wall of these people's everyday lives and not watching one of the best actors gathered together to make this magic happen. That's really why they should have a special Oscar category for best ensembles because sometimes a movie comes together so perfectly because of the entire cast and not just one or two people carrying it. Everyone from the main cast to the background actors who are onscreen for only a few minutes absolutely nails it in this film. I especially loved Harold Ramis (may he RIP) as the endearingly awkward doctor, Lawrence Kasdan as Melvin's rather exasperated psychiatrist, and the kids yelling "Melvin wait!" LOL This film always moves me no matter how many times I watch it and I watch it every time it comes on TV even though I have the DVD. It's just that classic...

This scene is genius in that you sympathize with both positions. On the one hand what he did for her was monumental & it isn't too much to ask when he needed something. On the other hand it's offensive when someone does something for you & EXPECTS reciprocation which nullifies the act as now you're essentially paying for it. I have an aunt that is always putting her nose into everyones business, in a good way doing for everyone else, but not asked for. Then when she needs something, she assumes you're on board with what she wants done without even asking, just assumes because, what I did for you.

It has so many "moments" in it, moments that are portrayed with such skill, such precision,.......moments that are right there in front of us every day and we are just too blind to see or too busy to care. It is a cinematic masterpiece. The casting director should have won an award because every single person in this film totally nailed it. Totally!! The ttile of the movie actually sums it up perfectly................as movie making goes this is As Good As It Gets.

I believe in a Heaven. If God has been paying attention, Jack Nicholson has to be going there. Even heaven needs a little devil with the greatest eyebrows ever showing us how to enjoy what God has made. Love ya Jesus!
