I was just going to write that although I am a weak modern woman who can't wield a sword, my thought after the initial resurrection would have been, "Let's burn this sucker." Maybe women needed more positions of responsibility.

Fantastic story and narration! This story is a true gem. CAS built wonderful worlds and filled them with terrible beasts. I always wondered how the city became abandoned while listening to it being mentioned in his other stories. This tale tells how that happened. This is a truly splendid yarn! Thanks!
Clark Ashton Smith was a true word smith, even more so than Lovecraft. Always love to see his stuff narrated.

Classic c.a.s, always a bedtime treat
Harley Warren and Randolph Carter pressed ever on, descending even deeper into the Stygian gloom of that aeons old forgotten crypt. "Not much further now, Gandalf," said Warren. "Will you please stop doing that," said Randolph Carter, "' I've asked you repeatedly not to." "Stop doing what," asked Harley Warren archly ? "Stop calling me Gandalf, " said Randolph Carter, " it’s really starting to get on my nerves."

There was a lot of dark and fantastic horror years back -- plus true crime, film noir, liberal sexuality, etc., until a reaction against it, and against dark comics especially, occurred -- inspired, perhaps, by the real-life horror overdose of the Depression, followed by WWII, followed by the Cold War and the ever-present threat of nuclear annihilation. Things loosened up some in the late fifties through the early eighties -- then changed again for a while due to the rise of AIDS and other factors, such as violent crime & drugs spinning out of control. Anyway, things seem to go through cycles. There were wild times in the twenties; and prostitution, was, for example, much more open and accepted during parts of the 1800's -- the years of riverboat gamblers & the wild West. Hell, cocaine and meth were legal for many years! Even in Roman times, as I understand it, there were emperors who instituted moral reforms, and emperors who loved to party to the max. We tend to think of things sort of evolving gradually, and usually getting looser and freer. But history seems to never show for long a straight line.
Very lovecraftian. Had to check the title. ✨
